that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, (A)but for the will of God. For we have spent enough of our past [a]lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you. They will give an account to Him who is ready (B)to judge the living and the dead. For this reason (C)the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but (D)live according to God in the spirit.

Serving for God’s Glory

But (E)the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers. And above all things have fervent love for one another, for (F)“love will cover a multitude of sins.” (G)Be hospitable to one another (H)without grumbling. 10 (I)As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, (J)as good stewards of (K)the manifold grace of God. 11 (L)If anyone speaks, let him speak as the [b]oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that (M)in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the [c]dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Suffering for God’s Glory

12 Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; 13 but rejoice (N)to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that (O)when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. 14 If you are [d]reproached for the name of Christ, (P)blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. [e]On their part He is blasphemed, (Q)but on your part He is glorified. 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a [f]busybody in other people’s matters. 16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this [g]matter.

17 For the time has come (R)for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, (S)what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 Now

(T)“If the righteous one is scarcely saved,
Where will the ungodly and the sinner appear?”

19 Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God (U)commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator.

Shepherd the Flock

The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a (V)witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the (W)glory that will be revealed: (X)Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, (Y)not by compulsion but [h]willingly, (Z)not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as (AA)being [i]lords over (AB)those entrusted to you, but (AC)being examples to the flock; and when (AD)the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive (AE)the crown of glory that does not fade away.

Submit to God, Resist the Devil

Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, (AF)all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for

(AG)“God resists the proud,
But (AH)gives grace to the humble.”

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

Be [j]sober, be [k]vigilant; [l]because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. 10 But [m]may the God of all grace, (AI)who called [n]us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, [o]perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. 11 (AJ)To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Farewell and Peace

12 By (AK)Silvanus, our faithful brother as I consider him, I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying (AL)that this is the true grace of God in which you stand.

13 She who is in Babylon, elect together with you, greets you; and so does (AM)Mark my son. 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love.

Peace to you all who are in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Greeting the Faithful

Simon Peter, a bondservant and (AN)apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who have [p]obtained (AO)like[q] precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:

(AP)Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His (AQ)divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him (AR)who called us by glory and virtue, (AS)by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be (AT)partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the [r]corruption that is in the world through lust.

Fruitful Growth in the Faith

But also for this very reason, (AU)giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue (AV)knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control [s]perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and (AW)to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither [t]barren (AX)nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these things is (AY)shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.

10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent (AZ)to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; 11 for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Peter’s Approaching Death

12 For this reason (BA)I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things, (BB)though you know and are established in the present truth. 13 Yes, I think it is right, (BC)as long as I am in this [u]tent, (BD)to stir you up by reminding you, 14 (BE)knowing that shortly I must [v]put off my tent, just as (BF)our Lord Jesus Christ showed me. 15 Moreover I will be careful to ensure that you always have a reminder of these things after my [w]decease.

The Trustworthy Prophetic Word(BG)

16 For we did not follow (BH)cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the (BI)power and (BJ)coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were (BK)eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: (BL)“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” 18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on (BM)the holy mountain.

19 [x]And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a (BN)light that shines in a dark place, (BO)until (BP)the day dawns and the morning star rises in your (BQ)hearts; 20 knowing this first, that (BR)no prophecy of Scripture is of any private [y]interpretation, 21 for (BS)prophecy never came by the will of man, (BT)but [z]holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires,(A) but rather for the will of God. For you have spent enough time in the past(B) doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.(C) They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.(D) But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.(E) For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead,(F) so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

The end of all things is near.(G) Therefore be alert and of sober mind(H) so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply,(I) because love covers over a multitude of sins.(J) Offer hospitality(K) to one another without grumbling.(L) 10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others,(M) as faithful(N) stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God.(O) If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides,(P) so that in all things God may be praised(Q) through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.(R)

Suffering for Being a Christian

12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you(S) to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice(T) inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ,(U) so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.(V) 14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ,(W) you are blessed,(X) for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.(Y) 17 For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household;(Z) and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?(AA) 18 And,

“If it is hard for the righteous to be saved,
what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”[a](AB)

19 So then, those who suffer according to God’s will(AC) should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

To the Elders and the Flock

To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder(AD) and a witness(AE) of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed:(AF) Be shepherds of God’s flock(AG) that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be;(AH) not pursuing dishonest gain,(AI) but eager to serve; not lording it over(AJ) those entrusted to you, but being examples(AK) to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd(AL) appears, you will receive the crown of glory(AM) that will never fade away.(AN)

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves(AO) to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility(AP) toward one another, because,

“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”[b](AQ)

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.(AR) Cast all your anxiety on him(AS) because he cares for you.(AT)

Be alert and of sober mind.(AU) Your enemy the devil prowls around(AV) like a roaring lion(AW) looking for someone to devour. Resist him,(AX) standing firm in the faith,(AY) because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.(AZ)

10 And the God of all grace, who called you(BA) to his eternal glory(BB) in Christ, after you have suffered a little while,(BC) will himself restore you and make you strong,(BD) firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.(BE)

Final Greetings

12 With the help of Silas,[c](BF) whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly,(BG) encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.(BH)

13 She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark.(BI) 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love.(BJ)

Peace(BK) to all of you who are in Christ.

Simon Peter, a servant(BL) and apostle of Jesus Christ,(BM)

To those who through the righteousness(BN) of our God and Savior Jesus Christ(BO) have received a faith as precious as ours:

Grace and peace be yours in abundance(BP) through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.(BQ)

Confirming One’s Calling and Election

His divine power(BR) has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him(BS) who called us(BT) by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises,(BU) so that through them you may participate in the divine nature,(BV) having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.(BW)

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;(BX) and to knowledge, self-control;(BY) and to self-control, perseverance;(BZ) and to perseverance, godliness;(CA) and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.(CB) For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive(CC) in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.(CD) But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind,(CE) forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.(CF)

10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters,[d] make every effort to confirm your calling(CG) and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble,(CH) 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom(CI) of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.(CJ)

Prophecy of Scripture

12 So I will always remind you of these things,(CK) even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth(CL) you now have. 13 I think it is right to refresh your memory(CM) as long as I live in the tent of this body,(CN) 14 because I know that I will soon put it aside,(CO) as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.(CP) 15 And I will make every effort to see that after my departure(CQ) you will always be able to remember these things.

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power,(CR) but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.(CS) 17 He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”[e](CT) 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.(CU)

19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable,(CV) and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light(CW) shining in a dark place, until the day dawns(CX) and the morning star(CY) rises in your hearts.(CZ) 20 Above all, you must understand(DA) that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God(DB) as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.(DC)
