17 For the time has come for the judgment to begin. It begins with the household of God; and if it starts with us, what will the outcome be for those who are disobeying God’s Good News? —

18 “If the righteous is barely delivered,
where will the ungodly and sinful end up?”[a]

19 So let those who are suffering according to God’s will entrust themselves to a faithful Creator by continuing to do what is good.

Therefore, I urge the congregation leaders among you, as a fellow-leader and witness to the Messiah’s sufferings, as well as a sharer in the glory to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is in your care, exercising oversight not out of constraint, but willingly, as God wants; and not out of a desire for dishonest gain, but with enthusiasm; also not as machers domineering over those in your care, but as people who become examples to the flock. Then, when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive glory as your unfading crown.

Likewise, you who are less experienced, submit to leaders. Further, all of you should clothe yourselves in humility toward one another, because

God opposes the arrogant,
but to the humble he gives grace.[b]

Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that at the right time he may lift you up. Throw all your anxieties upon him, because he cares about you.

Stay sober, stay alert! Your enemy, the Adversary, stalks about like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

17 For the time has come for judgment, and it must begin with God’s household. And if judgment begins with us, what terrible fate awaits those who have never obeyed God’s Good News? 18 And also,

“If the righteous are barely saved,
what will happen to godless sinners?”[a]

19 So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you.

Advice for Elders and Young Men

And now, a word to you who are elders in the churches. I, too, am an elder and a witness to the sufferings of Christ. And I, too, will share in his glory when he is revealed to the whole world. As a fellow elder, I appeal to you: Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God. Don’t lord it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example. And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honor.

In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for

“God opposes the proud
but gives grace to the humble.”[b]

So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

17 For it is time for judgment (A)to begin [a]with (B)the household of God; and if it (C)begins [b]with us first, what will be the outcome for those (D)who do not obey the (E)gospel of God? 18 (F)And if it is with difficulty that the righteous is saved, [c]what will become of the (G)godless man and the sinner? 19 Therefore, those also who suffer according to (H)the will of God are to entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.

Serve God Willingly

(I)Therefore, I urge elders among you, as your (J)fellow elder and a (K)witness of the sufferings of Christ, and one who is also a [d](L)fellow partaker of the glory that is to be revealed: shepherd (M)the flock of God among you, exercising oversight, (N)not under compulsion but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and (O)not [e]with greed but with eagerness; nor yet as (P)domineering over [f]those assigned to your care, but by [g]proving to be [h](Q)examples to the flock. And when the Chief (R)Shepherd appears, you will receive the (S)unfading [i](T)crown of glory. (U)You [j]younger men, likewise, (V)be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with (W)humility toward one another, because (X)God is opposed to the proud, but He gives grace to the humble.

Therefore (Y)humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time, having cast all your (Z)anxiety on Him, because He cares about you. (AA)Be of sober spirit, (AB)be on the alert. Your adversary, (AC)the devil, prowls around like a roaring (AD)lion, seeking someone to devour.
