^6 (A)In this you greatly rejoice, even though now ^(B)for a little while, ^(C)if necessary, you have been distressed by ^(D)various ^[a]trials, ⁷ so that the ^[b](E)proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which perishes ^(F)though tested by fire, ^(G)may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at ^(H)the revelation of Jesus Christ; ⁸ and ^(I)though you have not seen Him, you ^(J)love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and ^[c]full of glory, ⁹ obtaining as ^(K)the outcome of your faith, the salvation of ^[d]your souls.

¹² Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, ^13 (A)each one’s work will become evident; for ^(B)the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test ^[a]the quality of each one’s work. ¹⁴ If anyone’s work which he has built on it remains, he will ^(C)receive a reward.

³⁷ And He said, “The one who sows the good seed is ^(A)the Son of Man, ³⁸ and the field is the world; and as for the good seed, these are ^(B)the sons of the kingdom; and the weeds are ^(C)the sons of ^(D)the evil one; ³⁹ and the enemy who sowed them is the devil, and the harvest is ^(E)the ^[a]end of the age; and the reapers are angels. ⁴⁰ So just as the weeds are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at ^(F)the ^[b]end of the age. ^41 (G)The Son of Man ^(H)will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom ^[c]all ^(I)stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, ⁴² and they ^(J)will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place ^(K)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. ^43 (L)Then the righteous will shine forth like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. ^(M)The one who has ears, ^[d]let him hear.

³⁷ For ^[a]by your words you will be justified, and ^[b]by your words you will be condemned.”

The Desire for Signs

³⁸ Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, ^(A)we want to see a ^[c]sign from You.” ³⁹ But He answered and said to them, “^(B)An evil and adulterous generation craves a ^[d]sign; and so no ^[e]sign will be given to it except the ^[f]sign of Jonah the prophet; ⁴⁰ for just as ^(C)Jonah was in the stomach of the sea monster for three days and three nights, so will ^(D)the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for ^(E)three days and three nights.
