³ Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.^(A)

⁹ I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,^{(A) 10} but with good deeds,^(B) appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

² Do not conform^(A) to the pattern of this world,^(B) but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.^(C) Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is^(D)—his good, pleasing^(E) and perfect will.

¹⁸ In that day^(A) the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces,^{(B) 19} the earrings and bracelets^(C) and veils,^{(D) 20} the headdresses^(E) and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms, ²¹ the signet rings and nose rings,^{(F) 22} the fine robes and the capes and cloaks,^(G) the purses ²³ and mirrors, and the linen garments^(H) and tiaras^(I) and shawls.

³ Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers^(A) or addicted to much wine,^(B) but to teach what is good. ⁴ Then they can urge the younger women^(C) to love their husbands and children, ⁵ to be self-controlled^(D) and pure, to be busy at home,^(E) to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands,^(F) so that no one will malign the word of God.^(G)

⁶ Similarly, encourage the young men^(H) to be self-controlled.^{(I) 7} In everything set them an example^(J) by doing what is good.^(K) In your teaching show integrity, seriousness ⁸ and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.^(L)

⁹ Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything,^(M) to try to please them, not to talk back to them, ¹⁰ and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior^(N) attractive.^(O)

¹¹ For the grace^(P) of God has appeared^(Q) that offers salvation to all people.^{(R) 12} It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions,^(S) and to live self-controlled,^(T) upright and godly lives^(U) in this present age, ¹³ while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing^(V) of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,^{(W) 14} who gave himself for us^(X) to redeem us from all wickedness^(Y) and to purify^(Z) for himself a people that are his very own,^(AA) eager to do what is good.^(AB)

¹⁵ These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.

⁷ I made you grow^(A) like a plant of the field. You grew and developed and entered puberty. Your breasts had formed and your hair had grown, yet you were stark naked.^(B)

⁸ “‘Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment^(C) over you and covered your naked body. I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant^(D) with you, declares the Sovereign Lord, and you became mine.^(E)

⁹ “‘I bathed you with water and washed^(F) the blood from you and put ointments on you. ¹⁰ I clothed you with an embroidered^(G) dress and put sandals of fine leather on you. I dressed you in fine linen^(H) and covered you with costly garments.^{(I) 11} I adorned you with jewelry:^(J) I put bracelets^(K) on your arms and a necklace^(L) around your neck, ¹² and I put a ring on your nose,^(M) earrings^(N) on your ears and a beautiful crown^(O) on your head.^{(P) 13} So you were adorned with gold and silver; your clothes^(Q) were of fine linen and costly fabric and embroidered cloth. Your food was honey, olive oil^(R) and the finest flour. You became very beautiful and rose to be a queen.^(S)
