They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.^(A)

¹⁴ He will become a sanctuary, a stone one strikes against; for both houses of Israel he will become a rock one stumbles over, a trap and a snare for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.^(A)

²³ but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to gentiles,^(A)

²² What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience the objects of wrath that are made for destruction,^(A)

⁷ This honor, then, is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,^[a]

⁴ For certain intruders have stolen in among you, people who long ago were designated for this condemnation as ungodly, who pervert the grace of our God into debauchery and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.^[a](A)

³ And in their greed they will exploit you with deceptive words. Their condemnation, pronounced against them long ago, has not been idle, and their destruction is not asleep.^(A)

⁹ For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,^(A)

¹⁶ to the one group a fragrance from death^[a] to death, to the other a fragrance from life^[b] to life. Who is qualified for these things?^(A)

³² Why not? Because they did not strive for it on the basis of faith but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone,^{(A) 33} as it is written,
