2 (A)Kale mukomye buli ngeri yonna ey’ettima, n’obulimba bwonna, n’obukuusa, n’obuggya, n’okwogera ekibi kwonna. 2 (B)Ng’abaana abaakazaalibwa bwe beegomba amata, nammwe mwegombenga amata ag’omwoyo, muganywenga mukule era mulokolebwe, 3 (C)kubanga mwalega ku bulungi bwa Mukama.
4 (D)Mujje gy’ali kubanga ye ly’ejjinja eddamu, abantu lye baasuula nga balowooza nti terigasa, kyokka eryalondebwa Katonda era ery’omugaso omunene ennyo. 5 (E)Mujje gy’ali nga muli ng’amayinja amalamu, muzimbibwemu ennyumba ey’omwoyo. Mulyoke mube bakabona be abaweereza ssaddaaka ey’omwoyo, esiimibwa Katonda mu Yesu Kristo Mukama waffe. 6 (F)Kubanga ekyawandiikibwa kigamba nti,
“Laba, nteeka mu Sayuuni,

oyo eyeesiga Kristo,
taliswazibwa.”
7 (G)Ejjinja eryo lya muwendo mungi nnyo eri mmwe abakkiriza. Naye eri abatakkiriza,
“Lye jjinja abazimbi lye baagaana,
lye lifuuse ejjinja ekkulu ery’oku nsonda.”

13 (M)Ku lwa Mukama waffe, mugonderenga buli kiragiro ky’abo abali mu buyinza, oba kabaka alina obufuzi obw’oku ntikko, 14 (N)oba abafuzi abalala b’atuma okubonerezanga abakola ebikolwa ebibi, era n’okusiimanga abo abakola ebikolwa ebirungi. 15 (O)Kubanga Katonda asiima mukolenga ebirungi, mulyoke musirisenga abantu abasirusiru era abatalina kye bamanyi. 16 (P)Mubenga ba ddembe, kyokka nga temulyesigamya ku kukola bitasaana, wabula mulikozese ng’abaweereza ba Katonda. 17 (Q)Mussengamu abantu bonna ekitiibwa, mwagalenga nnyo abooluganda. Tulabire ku Kristo

23 Bwe yavumibwa, ye teyavuma. 2 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;
10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;
14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.
15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.
17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.
20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

2 Therefore, rid yourselves(A) of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander(B) of every kind. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk,(C) so that by it you may grow up(D) in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.(E)
The Living Stone and a Chosen People
4 As you come to him, the living Stone(F)—rejected by humans but chosen by God(G) and precious to him— 5 you also, like living stones, are being built(H) into a spiritual house[a](I) to be a holy priesthood,(J) offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.(K) 6 For in Scripture it says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a chosen and precious cornerstone,(L)
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”[b](M)
7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,(N)
8 and,
They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.(R)
9 But you are a chosen people,(S) a royal priesthood,(T) a holy nation,(U) God’s special possession,(V) that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.(W) 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God;(X) once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Living Godly Lives in a Pagan Society
11 Dear friends,(Y) I urge you, as foreigners and exiles,(Z) to abstain from sinful desires,(AA) which wage war against your soul.(AB) 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds(AC) and glorify God(AD) on the day he visits us.
13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority:(AE) whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, 14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong(AF) and to commend those who do right.(AG) 15 For it is God’s will(AH) that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.(AI) 16 Live as free people,(AJ) but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil;(AK) live as God’s slaves.(AL) 17 Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers,(AM) fear God, honor the emperor.(AN)
18 Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters,(AO) not only to those who are good and considerate,(AP) but also to those who are harsh. 19 For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God.(AQ) 20 But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.(AR) 21 To this(AS) you were called,(AT) because Christ suffered for you,(AU) leaving you an example,(AV) that you should follow in his steps.
23 When they hurled their insults at him,(AY) he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats.(AZ) Instead, he entrusted himself(BA) to him who judges justly.(BB) 24 “He himself bore our sins”(BC) in his body on the cross,(BD) so that we might die to sins(BE) and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”(BF) 25 For “you were like sheep going astray,”[f](BG) but now you have returned to the Shepherd(BH) and Overseer of your souls.(BI)

De bouwstenen van Gods huis
2 Doe dus alles weg wat slecht is: alle bedrog, jaloersheid en kwaadsprekerij. 2 Verlang naar het zuivere woord van Gods waarheid, net zoals pasgeboren baby's verlangen naar pure, onverdunde melk. Want daardoor zullen jullie opgroeien. 3 Door Gods woord zullen jullie proeven hoe goed en vriendelijk de Heer is. 4 En ga naar Jezus toe. Hij is de levende bouwsteen waarmee God zijn huis wilde bouwen. De mensen hebben Hem wel afgekeurd, maar God heeft Hem uitgekozen. Hij vindt Hem kostbaar. 5 En jullie moeten je ook zelf laten gebruiken als levende stenen waarmee een geestelijk huis wordt gebouwd. Zo zijn jullie samen een heilig volk van priesters, een volk dat geestelijke offers brengt waar God blij mee is dankzij Jezus Christus. 6 Want er staat in de Boeken: "Kijk, Ik leg in Jeruzalem een kostbare bouwsteen (= Jezus) neer, die Ik heb uitgekozen. Die steen wordt de belangrijkste bouwsteen van mijn huis. Iedereen die op Hem vertrouwt, zal nooit in Hem teleurgesteld worden." 7 Voor jullie is die Steen kostbaar, want jullie vertrouwen op Hem. Maar voor de ongehoorzame mensen zijn de volgende woorden: "De bouwsteen die de bouwers niet goed genoeg vonden, is de belangrijkste steen van het gebouw geworden. Maar voor hen is hij een steen waaraan ze zich stoten, een rotsblok waarover ze vallen." 8 Ze stoten zich eraan, omdat ze Gods woord niet gehoorzamen en niet geloven. Dat kan ook niet anders, want zo heeft God dat gewild. 9 Maar jullie zijn door God uitgekozen. Jullie zijn een uitgekozen volk, een koninkrijk van priesters, een volk dat bij God hoort en dat zijn eigendom is.[a] Jullie zijn uitgekozen om de mensen te vertellen van de geweldige dingen die God heeft gedaan. Hij heeft jullie uit het donker geroepen om in zijn heerlijke licht te komen leven. 10 Vroeger waren jullie zijn volk niet, maar nu zijn jullie Gods volk. Eerst was er geen vergeving voor jullie ongehoorzaamheid, maar nu heeft God jullie al je ongehoorzaamheid vergeven.
Wees een voorbeeld voor de ongelovigen
11 Lieve broeders en zusters, de verlangens van jullie oude 'ik' zijn gevaarlijk voor jullie. Daarom zeg ik jullie dat je er niet naar moet luisteren. Want jullie zijn vreemdelingen op aarde. Jullie moeten dus niet dezelfde dingen doen als de ongelovige mensen. 12 Maar gedraag je goed tussen de mensen die niet in Jezus geloven. Zij zullen jullie wel beschuldigen van allerlei dingen die helemaal niet waar zijn. Maar als ze letten op de goede dingen die jullie doen, zullen ze God prijzen als Hij op een dag naar hen toe komt.
13 Wees gehoorzaam aan alle mensen die regeren, omdat de Heer dat wil. Wees dus gehoorzaam aan de Romeinse keizer als hoogste heerser. 14 Maar wees ook gehoorzaam aan de andere bestuurders. Zij zijn door de keizer aangewezen om slechte mensen te straffen en om mensen die goed leven, te prijzen. 15 Want als jullie gehoorzaam zijn, zullen de onverstandige mensen die niets van het goede nieuws weten, jullie nergens van kunnen beschuldigen. En dat is wat God wil. 16 Leef als vrije mensen, maar misbruik die vrijheid niet om te doen wat jullie maar willen, en om slechte dingen te doen. Gebruik die vrijheid om God te dienen. 17 Heb respect voor iedereen. Houd van je broeders en zusters.[b] Heb ontzag voor God en respect voor de Romeinse keizer.
18 Slaven,[c] heb respect voor jullie meesters en gehoorzaam hen. En niet alleen goede en vriendelijke meesters, maar ook slechte meesters. 19 Het is een eer als je moet lijden omdat je God gehoorzaam bent. 20 Maar als je moet lijden omdat je iets slechts hebt gedaan, zal niemand je prijzen. Maar als je goed doet, en dan tóch straf krijgt, is God trots op jullie. 21 Want nu God jullie heeft geroepen, zullen jullie ook moeten lijden. Dat hoort erbij. Want ook Christus heeft voor ons geleden terwijl Hij niets slechts had gedaan. Zo is Hij een voorbeeld voor ons. En Hij wil dat we zijn voorbeeld volgen. 22 Hij is God nooit ongehoorzaam geweest en heeft nooit gelogen. 23 Als Hij werd uitgescholden, schold Hij niet terug. En als de mensen Hem slecht behandelden, bedreigde Hij hen niet. Maar Hij vertrouwde er op dat God rechtvaardig over hen zal rechtspreken.
24 Toen Hij aan het kruis werd gespijkerd, droeg Hij ónze ongehoorzaamheid in Zich mee aan het kruis. Onze ongehoorzaamheid werd daar gekruisigd. Daardoor zijn we nu dood voor het kwaad. Nu kunnen we leven zoals God het wil. En door de wonden die de zweepslagen in zijn lichaam hebben gemaakt, hebben jullie genezing gekregen. 25 Vroeger waren jullie als verdwaalde schapen. Maar nu volgen jullie de Heer die jullie als een Herder wil leiden.

Veel van hen hadden een hoge positie. Ze verdienden geld en konden zich daarmee op den duur vrijkopen. Het grote verschil met een vrij mens was, dat ze niet weg mochten. Hun tijd en arbeid waren van hun meester. De 19e eeuwse slavernij was heel anders. Die slaven werden niet behandeld als mensen, omdat ze een andere huidskleur hadden. Ze werden mishandeld, kregen geen loon en konden zich nooit vrijkopen. Ze waren tot hun dood met lichaam, tijd en arbeid van hun meester. Dit is niet het soort slavernij waar Paulus het over heeft. Die slavernij waarin mensen zwaar mishandeld werden, is juist afgeschaft dankzij de inzet van gelovige mensen.
