Deberes conyugales
3 Asimismo vosotras, mujeres, estad sujetas a vuestros maridos;(A) para que también los que no creen a la palabra, sean ganados sin palabra por la conducta de sus esposas, 2 considerando vuestra conducta casta y respetuosa. 3 Vuestro atavío no sea el externo de peinados ostentosos, de adornos de oro o de vestidos lujosos,(B) 4 sino el interno, el del corazón, en el incorruptible ornato de un espíritu afable y apacible, que es de grande estima delante de Dios. 5 Porque así también se ataviaban en otro tiempo aquellas santas mujeres que esperaban en Dios, estando sujetas a sus maridos; 6 como Sara obedecía a Abraham, llamándole señor;(C) de la cual vosotras habéis venido a ser hijas, si hacéis el bien, sin temer ninguna amenaza.
7 Vosotros, maridos, igualmente, vivid con ellas sabiamente,(D) dando honor a la mujer como a vaso más frágil, y como a coherederas de la gracia de la vida, para que vuestras oraciones no tengan estorbo.
Una buena conciencia
8 Finalmente, sed todos de un mismo sentir, compasivos, amándoos fraternalmente, misericordiosos, amigables; 9 no devolviendo mal por mal, ni maldición por maldición, sino por el contrario, bendiciendo, sabiendo que fuisteis llamados para que heredaseis bendición. 10 Porque:
El que quiere amar la vida
Y ver días buenos,
Refrene su lengua de mal,
Y sus labios no hablen engaño;
11 Apártese del mal, y haga el bien;
Busque la paz, y sígala.
12 Porque los ojos del Señor están sobre los justos,
Y sus oídos atentos a sus oraciones;
Pero el rostro del Señor está contra aquellos que hacen el mal.(E)
13 ¿Y quién es aquel que os podrá hacer daño, si vosotros seguís el bien? 14 Mas también si alguna cosa padecéis por causa de la justicia, bienaventurados sois.(F) Por tanto, no os amedrentéis por temor de ellos, ni os conturbéis, 15 sino santificad a Dios el Señor en vuestros corazones,(G) y estad siempre preparados para presentar defensa con mansedumbre y reverencia ante todo el que os demande razón de la esperanza que hay en vosotros; 16 teniendo buena conciencia, para que en lo que murmuran de vosotros como de malhechores, sean avergonzados los que calumnian vuestra buena conducta en Cristo. 17 Porque mejor es que padezcáis haciendo el bien, si la voluntad de Dios así lo quiere, que haciendo el mal. 18 Porque también Cristo padeció una sola vez por los pecados, el justo por los injustos, para llevarnos a Dios, siendo a la verdad muerto en la carne, pero vivificado en espíritu; 19 en el cual también fue y predicó a los espíritus encarcelados, 20 los que en otro tiempo desobedecieron, cuando una vez esperaba la paciencia de Dios en los días de Noé, mientras se preparaba el arca, en la cual pocas personas, es decir, ocho, fueron salvadas por agua.(H) 21 El bautismo que corresponde a esto ahora nos salva (no quitando las inmundicias de la carne, sino como la aspiración de una buena conciencia hacia Dios) por la resurrección de Jesucristo, 22 quien habiendo subido al cielo está a la diestra de Dios; y a él están sujetos ángeles, autoridades y potestades.

Deberes de los esposos
3 Así también ustedes, las esposas, sométanse a sus esposos, para que, si algunos de ellos no creen en el mensaje, puedan ser convencidos, sin necesidad de palabras, por el comportamiento de ustedes, 2 al ver ellos su conducta pura y reverente para con Dios. 3 Que el adorno de ustedes no consista en cosas externas, como peinados exagerados, joyas de oro o vestidos lujosos, 4 sino en lo íntimo del corazón, en la belleza incorruptible de un espíritu suave y tranquilo. Esta belleza vale mucho delante de Dios. 5 Pues éste era también, en tiempos antiguos, el adorno de las mujeres santas; ellas confiaban en Dios y se sometían a sus esposos. 6 Así fue Sara, que obedeció a Abraham y lo llamó «mi señor». Y ustedes son hijas de ella, si hacen el bien y no tienen miedo de nada.
7 En cuanto a ustedes, los esposos, sean comprensivos con sus esposas. Denles el honor que les corresponde, teniendo en cuenta que ellas son más delicadas y están llamadas a compartir con ustedes la vida que Dios les dará como herencia. Háganlo así para no poner estorbo a sus propias oraciones.
Deberes de todos los cristianos
8 En fin, vivan todos ustedes en armonía, unidos en un mismo sentir y amándose como hermanos. Sean bondadosos y humildes. 9 No devuelvan mal por mal ni insulto por insulto. Al contrario, devuelvan bendición, pues Dios los ha llamado a recibir bendición. 10 Porque:
«Quien quiera amar la vida y pasar días felices,
cuide su lengua de hablar mal
y sus labios de decir mentiras;
11 aléjese del mal y haga el bien,
busque la paz y sígala.
12 Porque el Señor cuida a los justos
y presta oídos a sus oraciones,
pero está en contra de los malhechores.»
13 ¿Quién podrá hacerles mal, si ustedes se empeñan siempre en hacer el bien? 14 Pero aun si por actuar con rectitud han de sufrir, ¡dichosos ustedes! No tengan miedo a nadie, ni se asusten, 15 sino honren a Cristo como Señor en sus corazones. Estén siempre preparados a responder a todo el que les pida razón de la esperanza que ustedes tienen, 16 pero háganlo con humildad y respeto. Pórtense de tal modo que tengan tranquila su conciencia, para que los que hablan mal de su buena conducta como creyentes en Cristo, se avergüencen de sus propias palabras.
17 Es mejor sufrir por hacer el bien, si así lo quiere Dios, que por hacer el mal. 18 Porque Cristo mismo sufrió la muerte por nuestros pecados, una vez para siempre. Él era inocente, pero sufrió por los malos, para llevarlos a ustedes a Dios. En su fragilidad humana, murió; pero resucitó con una vida espiritual, 19 y de esta manera fue a proclamar su victoria a los espíritus que estaban presos. 20 Éstos habían sido desobedientes en tiempos antiguos, en los días de Noé, cuando Dios esperaba con paciencia mientras se construía la barca, en la que algunas personas, ocho en total, fueron salvadas por medio del agua. 21 Y aquella agua representaba el agua del bautismo, por medio del cual somos ahora salvados. El bautismo no consiste en limpiar el cuerpo, sino en pedirle a Dios una conciencia limpia; y nos salva por la resurrección de Jesucristo, 22 que subió al cielo y está a la derecha de Dios, y al que han quedado sujetos los ángeles y demás seres espirituales que tienen autoridad y poder.

3 (A)In the same way, you wives, (B)be subject to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be (C)won over without a word by the behavior of their wives, 2 as they observe your pure [a]and respectful behavior. 3 (D)Your adornment must not be merely the external—braiding the hair, wearing gold jewelry, or putting on apparel; 4 but it should be (E)the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. 5 For in this way the holy women of former times, (F)who hoped in God, also used to adorn themselves, being subject to their own husbands, 6 just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, (G)calling him lord; and you have proved to be her children if you do what is right [b](H)without being frightened by any fear.
7 (I)You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with [c](J)someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
8 [d]To sum up, (K)all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, [e](L)loving, (M)compassionate, and (N)humble; 9 (O)not returning evil for evil or (P)insult for insult, but giving a (Q)blessing instead; for (R)you were called for the very purpose that you would (S)inherit a blessing. 10 For,
“(T)The one who desires life, to love and see good days,
Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.
11 (U)He must turn away from evil and do good;
He must seek peace and pursue it.
12 (V)For the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous,
And His ears attend to their prayer,
But the face of the Lord is against evildoers.”
13 (W)And who is [f]there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? 14 But even if you should (X)suffer for the sake of righteousness, (Y)you [g]are blessed. (Z)And do not fear their [h]intimidation, and do not be in dread, 15 but [i]sanctify (AA)Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready (AB)to make a [j]defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the (AC)hope that is in you, but (AD)with gentleness and (AE)respect; 16 [k]and keep a (AF)good conscience so that in the thing in which (AG)you are slandered, those who disparage your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. 17 For (AH)it is better, (AI)if [l]God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong. 18 For (AJ)Christ also [m]suffered for sins (AK)once for all time, the just for the unjust, so that He might (AL)bring us to God, having been put to death (AM)in the flesh, but made alive (AN)in the [n]spirit; 19 in [o]which He also went and made proclamation to the spirits in prison, 20 who once were disobedient when the (AO)patience of God (AP)kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of (AQ)the ark, in which a few, that is, (AR)eight (AS)persons, were brought safely through the water. 21 (AT)Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—(AU)not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God [p]for a (AV)good conscience—through (AW)the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 (AX)who is at the right hand of God, (AY)having gone into heaven, (AZ)after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.

3 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;
2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.
3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:
6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
8 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:
9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.
10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:
11 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.
12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.
13 And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?
14 But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;
15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.
17 For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.
18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.
