También vosotras, mujeres, sed respetuosas con vuestros maridos, para que vuestra conducta intachable y recatada, basada en hechos y no en palabras, conquiste incluso a los más reacios al mensaje de salvación. No os preocupe tanto el adorno exterior —peinados llamativos, joyas valiosas, vestidos lujosos— cuanto el interior, el del corazón: el adorno incorruptible de un espíritu apacible y sereno, que es la auténtica belleza a los ojos de Dios. Así se engalanaban antaño aquellas santas mujeres que habían puesto su esperanza en Dios: mostrándose respetuosas con sus maridos. Buen ejemplo el de Sara, que obedecía a Abrahán llamándole “señor”; vosotras seréis hijas suyas, si hacéis el bien sin dejaros intimidar por nada.

Igualmente vosotros, maridos, convivid con ellas sabiendo que la mujer es un ser más delicado que merece un honor especial y que habéis de heredar junto con ellas el don de la vida. De esta manera tendréis asegurado el éxito de vuestras oraciones.

Hacer el bien sin miedo al sufrimiento

En fin, tened todos un mismo pensar, compartid penas y alegrías, portaos fraternalmente, sed misericordiosos y sencillos. No devolváis mal por mal, ni insulto por insulto. Al contrario, bendecid, pues habéis sido llamados a heredar una bendición. 10 En efecto:

Quien desee amar la vida
y conocer días felices,
debe guardar su lengua del mal,
y sus labios de la falsedad.
11 Debe apartarse del mal y practicar el bien,
debe buscar la paz y correr tras ella.
12 Pues los ojos del Señor se fijan en los buenos,
y sus oídos atienden a sus ruegos.
Rechaza, en cambio, el Señor
a quienes practican el mal.

13 Y ¿quién podrá haceros daño, si os entregáis con ardor a la práctica del bien? 14 Pero, aun cuando tengáis que sufrir por comportaros rectamente, ¡dichosos vosotros! No les tengáis miedo ni os acobardéis. 15 Glorificad en vuestro corazón a Cristo, el Señor, estando dispuestos en todo momento a dar razón de vuestra esperanza a cualquiera que os pida explicaciones. Pero, eso sí, hacedlo con dulzura y respeto, 16 como quien tiene limpia la conciencia, para que quienes critican vuestra buena conducta cristiana, queden avergonzados de sus calumnias. 17 Porque más vale sufrir, si así lo quiere Dios, por hacer el bien, que por hacer el mal.

El bautismo que salva

18 También Cristo murió por los pecados, una vez por todas, el inocente por los culpables, para conduciros a Dios. Como mortal, sufrió la muerte; como espiritual fue devuelto a la vida. 19 Fue entonces también cuando proclamó su mensaje a los espíritus que se hallaban en prisión, 20 es decir, a los desobedientes del tiempo de Noé, cuando Dios esperaba pacientemente mientras se construía el arca, en la que unos pocos —ocho personas— se salvaron a través del agua. 21 Aquello fue una imagen del bautismo que ahora os salva. Bautismo que no consiste en quitar una suciedad corporal, sino en comprometerse ante Dios a llevar una conducta limpia. Y os salva en virtud de la resurrección de Jesucristo, 22 que, ascendido al cielo, comparte el poder soberano de Dios y tiene bajo su autoridad a todas las potencias celestiales.

Likewise (A)[a]let the wives be subject to their husbands, [b]that even they which obey not the word, may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives.

While they behold your pure conversation which is with fear:

(B)[c]Whose appareling let it not be that outward, with braided hair, and gold put about, or in putting on of apparel:

But let it be the [d]hidden man of the heart, which consisteth in the incorruption of a meek and quiet spirit, which is [e]before God a thing much set by.

[f]For even after this manner in time past did the holy women, which trusted in God, tire themselves, and were subject to their husbands.

As Sarah obeyed Abraham, and (C)called him Sir: whose daughters ye are, while ye do well, [g]not being afraid of any terror.

(D)[h]Likewise ye husbands, [i]dwell with them as men of [j]knowledge, [k]giving [l]honor unto the woman, as unto the weaker [m]vessel, [n]even as they which are heirs together of the [o]grace of life, [p]that your prayers be not interrupted.

[q]Finally, be ye all of one mind: one suffer with another: love as brethren: be pitiful, be courteous.

(E)[r]Not rendering evil for evil, neither rebuke for rebuke: but contrariwise bless, [s]knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should be heirs of blessing.

10 (F)[t]For if any man long after life, and to [u]see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile.

11 (G)Let him eschew evil and do good: let him seek peace and follow after it.

12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: and the [v]face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

13 [w]And who is it that will harm you, if ye follow that which is good?

14 (H)Notwithstanding blessed are ye, if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake. [x]Yea, (I)fear not their [y]fear, neither be troubled.

15 But [z]sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, [aa]and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you, with meekness and reverence.

16 Having a good conscience, that when they speak evil of you as of evil doers, they may be ashamed which slander your good conversation in Christ.

17 [ab]For it is better (if the will of God be so) that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.

18 (J)[ac]For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, [ad]the just for the unjust, [ae]that he might bring us to God, [af]and was put to death concerning the [ag]flesh, but was quickened by the spirit.

19 [ah]By [ai]the which he also went, and preached unto the [aj]spirits that are in prison.

20 Which were in time passed disobedient, when [ak]once the long suffering of God abode in the days of (K)Noah, while the Ark was preparing, wherein few, that is, eight [al]souls were saved in the water.

21 [am]Whereof the baptism that now is, answering that figure, (which is not a putting away of the filth of the flesh, but a confident demanding with a good conscience maketh to [an]God) saveth us also [ao]by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

22 Which is at the right hand of God, gone into heaven, to whom the Angels, and Powers, and might are subject.

Submission to Husbands

(E)Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— rather let it be (F)the hidden person of the heart, with the [a]incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, (G)calling him lord, whose daughters you are if you do good and are not afraid with any terror.

A Word to Husbands

(H)Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, (I)as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, (J)that your prayers may not be hindered.

Called to Blessing

Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be [b]courteous; (K)not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary (L)blessing, knowing that you were called to this, (M)that you may inherit a blessing. 10 For

(N)“He who would love life
And see good days,
(O)Let him [c]refrain his tongue from evil,
And his lips from speaking deceit.
11 Let him (P)turn away from evil and do good;
(Q)Let him seek peace and pursue it.
12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
(R)And His ears are open to their prayers;
But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

Suffering for Right and Wrong

13 (S)And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? 14 (T)But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. (U)“And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.” 15 But [d]sanctify [e]the Lord God in your hearts, and always (V)be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the (W)hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 16 (X)having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. 17 For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

Christ’s Suffering and Ours

18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring [f]us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, 19 by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison, 20 who formerly were disobedient, [g]when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. 21 (Y)There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (Z)(not the removal of the filth of the flesh, (AA)but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and (AB)is at the right hand of God, (AC)angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him.

Wives, in the same way submit yourselves(A) to your own husbands(B) so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over(C) without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.(D) Rather, it should be that of your inner self,(E) the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.(F) For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God(G) used to adorn themselves.(H) They submitted themselves to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord.(I) You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

Husbands,(J) in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

Suffering for Doing Good

Finally, all of you, be like-minded,(K) be sympathetic, love one another,(L) be compassionate and humble.(M) Do not repay evil with evil(N) or insult with insult.(O) On the contrary, repay evil with blessing,(P) because to this(Q) you were called(R) so that you may inherit a blessing.(S) 10 For,

“Whoever would love life
    and see good days
must keep their tongue from evil
    and their lips from deceitful speech.
11 They must turn from evil and do good;
    they must seek peace and pursue it.
12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous
    and his ears are attentive to their prayer,
but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”[a](T)

13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?(U) 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed.(V) “Do not fear their threats[b]; do not be frightened.”[c](W) 15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer(X) to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope(Y) that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience,(Z) so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.(AA) 17 For it is better, if it is God’s will,(AB) to suffer for doing good(AC) than for doing evil. 18 For Christ also suffered once(AD) for sins,(AE) the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.(AF) He was put to death in the body(AG) but made alive in the Spirit.(AH) 19 After being made alive,[d] he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits(AI) 20 to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently(AJ) in the days of Noah while the ark was being built.(AK) In it only a few people, eight in all,(AL) were saved(AM) through water, 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you(AN) also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience(AO) toward God.[e] It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,(AP) 22 who has gone into heaven(AQ) and is at God’s right hand(AR)—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.(AS)
