1 Moseboken 50

Jakob blir begravd

50 (A) Då böjde Josef sig ner över sin fars ansikte och grät över honom och kysste honom. 2 Josef befallde läkarna han hade i sin tjänst att balsamera[a] hans far. Och läkarna balsamerade Israel. 3 Det tog fyrtio dagar, så lång tid tar en balsamering. Och egyptierna sörjde honom i sjuttio dagar[b].

4 När sorgedagarna efter honom var över sade Josef till faraos husfolk: ”Om jag har funnit nåd för era ögon, ber jag er säga dessa ord till farao: 5 (B) Min far har tagit ed av mig och sagt: När jag är död, så begrav mig i den grav som jag grävt åt mig i Kanaans land. Låt mig därför resa och begrava min far och sedan komma tillbaka.” 6 Farao svarade: ”Res dit och begrav din far enligt den ed som han tog av dig.”

7 Då reste Josef för att begrava sin far. Och faraos alla tjänare reste med honom, de äldste vid hans hov och alla de äldste i Egyptens land, 8 dessutom allt Josefs husfolk och hans bröder och hans fars husfolk. Bara sina små barn, sina får och sina kor lämnade de kvar i landet Goshen. 9 Både vagnar och ryttare reste tillsammans med honom, och det var en mycket stor skara.

10 När de kom till Goren-Haatad[c] på andra sidan Jordan höll de där en mycket stor och högtidlig dödsklagan, och han ordnade en sorgehögtid efter sin far i sju dagar. 11 När landets invånare kananeerna såg sorgehögtiden i Goren-Haatad sade de: ”Här har egyptierna en stor sorgehögtid.” Därför kallades platsen Abel-Misrajim[d]. Den ligger på andra sidan Jordan.

12 Jakobs söner gjorde med honom som han hade befallt dem. 13 (C) De förde honom till Kanaans land och begravde honom i grottan vid fältet i Makpela, den mark som Abraham hade köpt till gravplats av hetiten Efron mitt emot Mamre.

14 När Josef hade begravt sin far, vände han tillbaka till Egypten med sina bröder och alla som följt med honom för att begrava hans far.

Bröderna ber Josef om förlåtelse

15 När Josefs bröder såg att deras far var död, sade de: ”Tänk om Josef hyser agg mot oss och ger igen för allt det onda som vi gjort mot honom.” 16 Därför sände de bud till Josef och lät säga: ”Din far sade så här före sin död: 17 Så ska ni säga till Josef: Vi ber dig, förlåt dina bröder deras brott och synd, att de gjort så illa mot dig. Så förlåt nu den synd som din fars Guds tjänare har begått.” Josef grät när han fick deras hälsning.

18 Sedan kom också hans bröder och föll ner för honom och sade: ”Vi är dina slavar.” 19 Men Josef sade till dem: ”Var inte rädda. Skulle jag ta Guds plats? 20 Ni menade ont mot mig, men Gud har menat något gott genom det, för att bevara många människor vid liv. 21 Så var inte rädda. Jag ska sörja för er och era små barn.” Och han tröstade dem och talade vänligt till dem.

Josef dör

22 Josef bodde kvar i Egypten med sin fars husfolk, och han blev hundratio år. 23 Josef fick se Efraims barn till tredje led. Även Manasses son Makirs barn lades i Josefs knä när de föddes[e].

24 (D) Och Josef sade till sina bröder: ”Jag dör, men Gud ska se till er och föra er från detta land till det land som han lovat med ed åt Abraham, Isak och Jakob.” 25 (E) Och Josef tog ed av Israels söner och sade: ”När Gud ser till er, för då mina ben härifrån[f].”

26 Josef dog när han var hundratio år[g]. Och man balsamerade honom och lade honom i en kista i Egypten.

Jakob begravs i Kanaan

50 Josef kastade sig över sin fars kropp och grät över honom och kysste honom. 2 Sedan bad han de läkare som var i tjänst hos honom att balsamera hans far. Läkarna balsamerade då Israel, 3 vilket tog fyrtio dagar, den tid som balsameringen tar. Egypterna sörjde honom i sjuttio dagar. 4 När sorgetiden var över, talade Josef med faraos hovmän och sa: ”Visa mig den välviljan att tala med farao för mig. Säg 5 att min far fick mig att med ed lova att när han dog skulle jag begrava honom i den grav som han låtit hugga ut åt sig i Kanaan. Be om tillstånd för mig att resa dit upp och begrava min far och sedan komma tillbaka.”

6 Farao svarade: ”Gå och begrav din far, som du har lovat honom med ed.”

7 Då begav sig Josef iväg för att begrava sin far, tillsammans med alla faraos tjänstemän, de äldste i hans hus och de äldste i Egypten, 8 och alla Josefs släktingar, hans bröder och hans fars familj. Men sina små barn och alla hjordar lämnade de kvar i Goshens land. 9 Många vagnar och ryttare och mycket folk följde alltså med Josef.

10 När de kom fram till Goren Haatad på andra sidan Jordan, höll de en högtidlig dödsklagan, och Josef sörjde sin far i sju dagar. 11 Invånarna där, kanaanéerna, såg sorgehögtiden i Goren Haatad och sa: ”Det är en mycket stor sorgehögtid som egypterna håller där.” Därför gav de platsen namnet Avel Misrajim.[a] 12 Jakobs söner gjorde alltså som han hade befallt dem. 13 De förde honom till Kanaans land och begravde honom där i grottan på Makpelas åker, den grotta nära Mamre, som Abraham hade köpt som begravningsplats av hettiten Efron.

Josef tar väl hand om sina bröder

14 Efter att ha begravt sin far återvände Josef till Egypten med sina bröder och alla dem som följt med honom för att begrava hans far.

15 Men efter sin fars död sa Josefs bröder: ”Nu kommer Josef kanske att hysa agg mot oss och ge igen för allt det onda vi har gjort mot honom”. 16 Därför sände de bud till honom och lät säga: ”Innan din far dog bad han: 17 ’Säg till Josef: Vi ber dig förlåta dina bröder deras synd och allt det onda vi har gjort mot dig.’ Vi ber dig därför: ’Förlåt oss, din fars Guds tjänare, allt det onda vi gjort.’ ” När Josef fick meddelandet brast han i gråt.

18 Sedan kom hans bröder och föll ned inför honom och sa: ”Vi är dina slavar.”

19 Men Josef sa till dem: ”Var inte rädda! Jag är väl inte Gud. 20 Det ni avsåg var ont mot mig, men Gud förvandlade det till något gott, för att göra det som nu har skett och för att rädda många människors liv. 21 Var inte rädda! Jag ska själv ta hand om er och era familjer.” Och han talade mycket vänligt till dem och tröstade dem.

Josef dör

22 Josef och hans fars familj blev alltså kvar i Egypten. Josef blev 110 år gammal. 23 Han levde så länge att han fick se sin son Efraims barnbarn födas, och Manasses son Makirs barn kunde han adoptera.[b]

24 ”Jag kommer snart att dö”, sa Josef till sina bröder, ”men Gud ska ta hand om er och föra er tillbaka till det land som han med ed har lovat Abraham och Isak och Jakob.”

25 Josef fick israeliterna att lova med en ed och sa: ”Gud kommer att ta sig an er och då ska ni föra mina kvarlevor härifrån.”

26 Sedan dog Josef 110 år gammal och man balsamerade hans kropp och lade den i en kista i Egypten.

50 And Joseph fell upon his father’s face, and wept upon him, and kissed him. 2 And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel. 3 And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of embalming: and the Egyptians wept for him three-score and ten days.

4 And when the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found favor in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, 5 My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I [a]have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again. 6 And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear. 7 And Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8 and all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father’s house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen. 9 And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company. 10 And they came to the threshing-floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and there they lamented with a very great and sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days. 11 And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous [b]mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan. 12 And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them: 13 for his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field, for a possession of a burying-place, of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre. 14 And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.

15 And when Joseph’s brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, It may be that Joseph will hate us, and will fully requite us all the evil which we did unto him. 16 And they sent a message unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying, 17 So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the transgression of thy brethren, and their sin, for that they did unto thee evil. And now, we pray thee, forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him. 18 And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we are thy servants. 19 And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God? 20 And as for you, ye meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive. 21 Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake [c]kindly unto them.

22 And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father’s house: and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years. 23 And Joseph saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were born upon Joseph’s knees. 24 And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die; but God will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 25 And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence. 26 So Joseph died, being a hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

50 Joseph threw himself on his father and wept over him and kissed him.(A) 2 Then Joseph directed the physicians in his service to embalm his father Israel. So the physicians embalmed him,(B) 3 taking a full forty days, for that was the time required for embalming. And the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.(C)

4 When the days of mourning(D) had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh’s court,(E) “If I have found favor in your eyes,(F) speak to Pharaoh for me. Tell him, 5 ‘My father made me swear an oath(G) and said, “I am about to die;(H) bury me in the tomb I dug for myself(I) in the land of Canaan.”(J) Now let me go up and bury my father;(K) then I will return.’”

6 Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.”

7 So Joseph went up to bury his father. All Pharaoh’s officials(L) accompanied him—the dignitaries of his court(M) and all the dignitaries of Egypt— 8 besides all the members of Joseph’s household and his brothers and those belonging to his father’s household.(N) Only their children and their flocks and herds were left in Goshen.(O) 9 Chariots(P) and horsemen[a] also went up with him. It was a very large company.

10 When they reached the threshing floor(Q) of Atad, near the Jordan, they lamented loudly and bitterly;(R) and there Joseph observed a seven-day period(S) of mourning(T) for his father.(U) 11 When the Canaanites(V) who lived there saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “The Egyptians are holding a solemn ceremony of mourning.”(W) That is why that place near the Jordan is called Abel Mizraim.[b]

12 So Jacob’s sons did as he had commanded them:(X) 13 They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah,(Y) near Mamre,(Z) which Abraham had bought along with the field(AA) as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite.(AB) 14 After burying his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, together with his brothers and all the others who had gone with him to bury his father.(AC)

Joseph Reassures His Brothers

15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph holds a grudge(AD) against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?”(AE) 16 So they sent word to Joseph, saying, “Your father left these instructions(AF) before he died: 17 ‘This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins(AG) and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.’(AH) Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father.(AI)” When their message came to him, Joseph wept.(AJ)

18 His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him.(AK) “We are your slaves,”(AL) they said.

19 But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God?(AM) 20 You intended to harm me,(AN) but God intended(AO) it for good(AP) to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.(AQ) 21 So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.(AR)” And he reassured them and spoke kindly(AS) to them.

The Death of Joseph

22 Joseph stayed in Egypt, along with all his father’s family. He lived a hundred and ten years(AT) 23 and saw the third generation(AU) of Ephraim’s(AV) children.(AW) Also the children of Makir(AX) son of Manasseh(AY) were placed at birth on Joseph’s knees.[c](AZ)

24 Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die.(BA) But God will surely come to your aid(BB) and take you up out of this land to the land(BC) he promised on oath to Abraham,(BD) Isaac(BE) and Jacob.”(BF) 25 And Joseph made the Israelites swear an oath(BG) and said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones(BH) up from this place.”(BI)

26 So Joseph died(BJ) at the age of a hundred and ten.(BK) And after they embalmed him,(BL) he was placed in a coffin in Egypt.
