Josefs silverbägare i Benjamins säck
44 Sedan befallde Josef sin närmaste man att fylla alla deras säckar med så mycket säd de kunde föra med sig och han sa till honom att lägga tillbaka vars och ens pengar överst i säckarna. 2 Josef gav dessutom order om att hans egen silverbägare skulle läggas överst i Benjamins säck tillsammans med pengarna för säden. Mannen gjorde som han hade blivit tillsagd. 3 Tidigt nästa morgon gav sig bröderna iväg med sina åsnor.
4 När de hade kommit ett stycke från staden, sa Josef till sin närmaste man: ”Skynda dig efter dem! När du hinner upp dem, fråga varför de lönar gott med ont. 5 Säg till dem: ’Är det inte den här som min herre dricker ur och som han tyder tecken med? Det var mycket illa gjort.’ ”
6 När mannen hann ifatt dem, sa han till dem allt som han hade fått order om.
7 ”Hur kan du anklaga oss för något sådant, herre?” frågade de. ”Vi skulle aldrig få för oss att göra något sådant. 8 Vi tog ju med oss tillbaka de pengar som vi hittade i våra säckar. Varför skulle vi då stjäla silver eller guld från din husbondes hus? 9 Om du hittar bägaren hos någon av oss, dina tjänare, så ska han dö, och alla vi övriga ska bli slavar åt dig, herre.” 10 ”Bra, det får bli som ni säger. Den som man finner bägaren hos blir min slav”, svarade mannen. ”Ni andra får gå fria.”
11 De tog snabbt ned sina säckar från åsneryggarna och öppnade dem. 12 Mannen började leta i den äldste broderns säck och slutade hos den yngste. Han hittade slutligen bägaren i Benjamins säck. 13 Då slet de sönder sina kläder i förtvivlan, lastade åsnorna igen och återvände till staden. 14 Josef var fortfarande hemma när Juda och hans bröder kom, och de föll ned på marken inför honom.
15 ”Vad är det ni har gjort?” frågade Josef. ”Förstår ni inte att en man som jag kan tyda tecken?” 16 Juda svarade: ”Vad ska vi säga, herre? Hur ska vi kunna förklara oss? Hur kan vi bevisa att vi är oskyldiga? Gud har dragit upp dina tjänares skuld. Vi är nu dina slavar, herre, både vi andra och han i vars säck bägaren återfanns.”
17 ”Aldrig”, sa Josef. ”Bara den som bägaren återfanns hos ska bli min slav. Resten av er kan återvända hem till er far utan att oroa er.”
18 Då steg Juda fram och sa: ”Låt mig bara få säga en sak, herre! Ha tålamod med mig bara ett ögonblick, och bli inte vred på din tjänare, fastän du är som farao själv. 19 Du frågade oss, herre, om vår far och om vi hade ytterligare någon bror, 20 och vi svarade, herre: ’Ja, vår gamle far lever. Han har en son, en yngling, som han fått på gamla dagar. Dennes bror är död, och han är den ende som är kvar av sin mors barn. Hans far älskar honom mycket.’ 21 Då sa du till oss, dina tjänare: ’Ta med honom hit, så att jag kan få se honom.’ 22 Men vi sa: ’Herre, pojken kan inte lämna sin far, för då kommer hans far att dö.’ 23 Men du sa till oss: ’Kom inte tillbaka hit, om ni inte har er yngste bror med er.’ 24 Därför återvände vi till vår far, din tjänare, och berättade för honom vad du, herre, hade sagt. 25 När han sedan sa: ’Gå tillbaka och köp oss lite mat’, 26 svarade vi: ’Vi kan inte resa utan att ta vår yngste bror med oss. Vi får inte visa oss för mannen utan att vår yngste bror är med.’
27 Då sa min far, din tjänare, till oss: ’Ni vet att min hustru fick två söner, och att 28 en av dem gick bort för att aldrig återvända, förmodligen söndersliten av vilda djur, för jag har aldrig sett honom sedan dess. 29 Om ni tar hans bror ifrån mig och något ont drabbar honom också, driver ni er gråhårige far med sorg ner i dödsriket.’ 30 Herre, om jag nu går tillbaka till min far och pojken inte är med oss – så fäst som han är vid pojken – 31 kommer han att dö när han ser att pojken inte är med oss. Vi, dina tjänare, driver då vår gråhårige far med sorg ner i dödsriket. 32 Herre, jag – din tjänare – lovade min far att jag skulle ta ansvaret för pojken. Jag sa till honom, att om jag inte hade honom med mig tillbaka, så skulle jag bära skulden inför honom för alltid. 33 Herre, låt mig stanna som slav i stället för pojken, och låt honom få återvända hem med sina bröder. 34 Hur skulle jag kunna återvända hem till min far utan honom? Skona mig från att behöva se min fars förtvivlan.”

Josef prövar sina bröder
44 Därefter befallde Josef sin husföreståndare: "Fyll männens säckar med säd så mycket de rymmer, och lägg vars och ens pengar överst i hans säck. 2 Och min bägare, silverbägaren, skall du lägga överst i den yngstes säck tillsammans med pengarna för hans säd." Han gjorde som Josef hade sagt. 3 På morgonen när det blev ljust sändes männen i väg med sina åsnor. 4 Men när de hade kommit ett litet stycke utanför staden, sade Josef till sin husföreståndare: "Sätt efter männen, och när du hinner upp dem skall du säga till dem: Varför har ni lönat gott med ont? 5 Det är ju den bägaren som min herre dricker ur och som han brukar spå med. Det är en ond gärning ni har gjort."
6 När han kom ifatt dem sade han detta till dem. 7 Då svarade de honom: "Varför talar min herre så? Dina tjänare skulle aldrig kunna göra något sådant! 8 Pengarna vi hittade överst i våra säckar har vi ju fört tillbaka till dig från Kanaans land. Varför skulle vi då stjäla silver eller guld ur din herres hus? 9 Den av dina tjänare som har bägaren skall dö och vi andra skall bli min herres slavar." 10 Han svarade: "Ja, det skall bli som ni har sagt. Den som bägaren finns hos skall bli min slav. Men ni andra är utan skuld." 11 Var och en skyndade sig att lyfta ner sin säck på marken och öppnade den. 12 Han sökte först hos den äldste och slutade hos den yngste. Och bägaren hittades i Benjamins säck. 13 Då rev de sönder sina kläder, lastade sina åsnor och vände tillbaka till staden.
14 Juda och hans bröder gick in i Josefs hus, där han ännu var kvar, och de föll ner till jorden för honom. 15 Då sade Josef till dem: "Vad har ni gjort? Förstod ni inte att en man som jag kan spå?" 16 Juda svarade: "Vad skall vi säga till min herre, hur skall vi tala och hur skall vi rentvå oss? Gud har funnit dina tjänares missgärning. Vi är nu min herres slavar, både den som bägaren hittades hos och vi andra." 17 Men Josef sade: "Nej, aldrig skulle jag göra så! Den som bägaren hittades hos, han skall bli min slav. Men ni andra kan fara hem till er far i frid."
Juda vädjar för Benjamin
18 Då steg Juda fram till honom och sade: "Lyssna på mig, herre! Låt din tjänare säga ett ord inför min herre och bli inte vred på din tjänare, för du är som farao. 19 Min herre frågade sina tjänare och sade: Har ni en far eller någon mer bror? 20 Vi svarade min herre: Vi har en gammal far och en son till honom, en som är född på hans ålderdom och som ännu är ung. Men en bror till honom är död, så han är den ende som är kvar efter sin mor, och hans far älskar honom. 21 Då sade du till dina tjänare: För honom hit ner till mig, så att jag med egna ögon får se honom. 22 Och vi svarade min herre: Pojken kan inte lämna sin far, han skulle dö om han lämnade honom. 23 Men du sade till dina tjänare: Om er yngste bror inte följer med er hit ner så får ni inte komma inför mitt ansikte. 24 När vi kommit hem till din tjänare, min far, berättade vi för honom vad min herre hade sagt. 25 Och när vår far sade: Res tillbaka och köp lite säd till mat åt oss, 26 svarade vi: Vi kan inte resa dit ner. Bara på det villkoret att vår yngste bror följer med oss kan vi resa. Vi får inte komma inför mannens ansikte om vår yngste bror inte är med. 27 Men din tjänare, min far, sade till oss: Ni vet själva att min hustru har fött två söner åt mig. 28 En gick bort ifrån mig, och jag sade: Han är säkert ihjälriven. Och jag har inte sett honom sedan dess. 29 Om ni tar också denne ifrån mig och någon olycka händer honom, så för ni mina grå hår med sorg ner i dödsriket. 30 Om jag alltså kommer hem till din tjänare, min far, utan pojken som vår fars hjärta är så fäst vid, 31 då blir det hans död när han ser att pojken inte är med. Dina tjänare skulle då föra din tjänares, vår fars, grå hår med sorg ner i dödsriket. 32 Jag, din tjänare, har lovat min far att ansvara för pojken, och jag har sagt att om jag inte har honom med mig hem igen skall jag vara en syndare inför min far i all min tid. 33 Låt därför din tjänare stanna kvar hos min herre som slav i pojkens ställe, men låt honom fara hem med sina bröder. 34 Hur skulle jag kunna resa hem till min far utan att ha pojken med mig? Jag förmår inte se den sorg som då skulle drabba min far."

44 Y MANDÓ José al mayordomo de su casa, diciendo: Hinche los costales de aquestos varones de alimentos, cuanto pudieren llevar, y pon el dinero de cada uno en la boca de su costal:
2 Y pondrás mi copa, la copa de plata, en la boca del costal del menor, con el dinero de su trigo. Y él hizo como dijo José.
3 Venida la mañana, los hombres fueron despedidos con sus asnos.
4 Habiendo ellos salido de la ciudad, de la que aun no se habían alejado, dijo José á su mayordomo: Levántate, y sigue á esos hombres; y cuando los alcanzares, diles: ¿Por qué habéis vuelto mal por bien?
5 ¿No es ésta en la que bebe mi señor, y por la que suele adivinar? habéis hecho mal en lo que hicisteis.
6 Y como él los alcanzó, díjoles estas palabras.
7 Y ellos le respondieron: ¿Por qué dice mi señor tales cosas? Nunca tal hagan tus siervos.
8 He aquí, el dinero que hallamos en la boca de nuestros costales, te lo volvimos á traer desde la tierra de Canaán; ¿cómo, pues, habíamos de hurtar de casa de tu señor plata ni oro?
9 Aquel de tus siervos en quien fuere hallada la copa, que muera, y aun nosotros seremos siervos de mi señor.
10 Y él dijo: También ahora sea conforme á vuestras palabras; aquél en quien se hallare, será mi siervo, y vosotros seréis sin culpa.
11 Ellos entonces se dieron prisa, y derribando cada uno su costal en tierra, abrió cada cual el costal suyo.
12 Y buscó; desde el mayor comenzó, y acabó en el menor; y la copa fué hallada en el costal de Benjamín.
13 Entonces ellos rasgaron sus vestidos, y cargó cada uno su asno, y volvieron á la ciudad.
14 Y llegó Judá con sus hermanos á casa de José, que aun estaba allí, y postráronse delante de él en tierra.
15 Y díjoles José: ¿Qué obra es esta que habéis hecho? ¿no sabéis que un hombre como yo sabe adivinar?
16 Entonces dijo Judá: ¿Qué diremos á mi señor? ¿qué hablaremos? ¿ó con qué nos justificaremos? Dios ha hallado la maldad de tus siervos: he aquí, nosotros somos siervos de mi señor, nosotros, y también aquél en cuyo poder fué hallada la copa.
17 Y él respondió: Nunca yo tal haga: el varón en cuyo poder fué hallada la copa, él será mi siervo; vosotros id en paz á vuestro padre.
18 Entonces Judá se llegó á él, y dijo: Ay señor mío, ruégote que hable tu siervo una palabra en oídos de mi señor, y no se encienda tu enojo contra tu siervo, pues que tú eres como Faraón.
19 Mi señor preguntó á sus siervos, diciendo: ¿Tenéis padre ó hermano?
20 Y nosotros respondimos á mi señor: Tenemos un padre anciano, y un mozo que le nació en su vejez, pequeño aún; y un hermano suyo murió, y él quedó solo de su madre, y su padre lo ama.
21 Y tú dijiste á tus siervos: Traédmelo, y pondré mis ojos sobre él.
22 Y nosotros dijimos á mi señor: El mozo no puede dejar á su padre, porque si le dejare, su padre morirá.
23 Y dijiste á tus siervos: Si vuestro hermano menor no descendiere con vosotros, no veáis más mi rostro.
24 Aconteció pues, que como llegamos á mi padre tu siervo, contámosle las palabras de mi señor.
25 Y dijo nuestro padre: Volved á comprarnos un poco de alimento.
26 Y nosotros respondimos: No podemos ir: si nuestro hermano fuere con nosotros, iremos; porque no podemos ver el rostro del varón, no estando con nosotros nuestro hermano el menor.
27 Entonces tu siervo mi padre nos dijo: Vosotros sabéis que dos me parió mi mujer;
28 Y el uno salió de conmigo, y pienso de cierto que fué despedazado, y hasta ahora no le he visto;
29 Y si tomareis también éste de delante de mí, y le aconteciere algún desastre, haréis descender mis canas con dolor á la sepultura.
30 Ahora, pues, cuando llegare yo á tu siervo mi padre, y el mozo no fuere conmigo, como su alma está ligada al alma de él,
31 Sucederá que cuando no vea al mozo, morirá: y tus siervos harán descender las canas de tu siervo nuestro padre con dolor á la sepultura.
32 Como tu siervo salió por fiador del mozo con mi padre, diciendo: Si no te lo volviere, entonces yo seré culpable para mi padre todos los días;
33 Ruégote por tanto que quede ahora tu siervo por el mozo por siervo de mi señor, y que el mozo vaya con sus hermanos.
34 Porque ¿cómo iré yo á mi padre sin el mozo? No podré, por no ver el mal que sobrevendrá á mi padre.

A Silver Cup in a Sack
44 Now Joseph gave these instructions to the steward of his house:(A) “Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each man’s silver in the mouth of his sack.(B) 2 Then put my cup,(C) the silver one,(D) in the mouth of the youngest one’s sack, along with the silver for his grain.” And he did as Joseph said.
3 As morning dawned, the men were sent on their way with their donkeys.(E) 4 They had not gone far from the city when Joseph said to his steward,(F) “Go after those men at once, and when you catch up with them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil?(G) 5 Isn’t this the cup(H) my master drinks from and also uses for divination?(I) This is a wicked thing you have done.’”
6 When he caught up with them, he repeated these words to them. 7 But they said to him, “Why does my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants(J) to do anything like that!(K) 8 We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan(L) the silver(M) we found inside the mouths of our sacks.(N) So why would we steal(O) silver or gold from your master’s house? 9 If any of your servants(P) is found to have it, he will die;(Q) and the rest of us will become my lord’s slaves.(R)”
10 “Very well, then,” he said, “let it be as you say. Whoever is found to have it(S) will become my slave;(T) the rest of you will be free from blame.”(U)
11 Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it. 12 Then the steward(V) proceeded to search,(W) beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest.(X) And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.(Y) 13 At this, they tore their clothes.(Z) Then they all loaded their donkeys(AA) and returned to the city.
14 Joseph was still in the house(AB) when Judah(AC) and his brothers came in, and they threw themselves to the ground before him.(AD) 15 Joseph said to them, “What is this you have done?(AE) Don’t you know that a man like me can find things out by divination?(AF)”
16 “What can we say to my lord?(AG)” Judah(AH) replied. “What can we say? How can we prove our innocence?(AI) God has uncovered your servants’(AJ) guilt. We are now my lord’s slaves(AK)—we ourselves and the one who was found to have the cup.(AL)”
17 But Joseph said, “Far be it from me to do such a thing!(AM) Only the man who was found to have the cup will become my slave.(AN) The rest of you, go back to your father in peace.”(AO)
18 Then Judah(AP) went up to him and said: “Pardon your servant, my lord,(AQ) let me speak a word to my lord. Do not be angry(AR) with your servant, though you are equal to Pharaoh himself. 19 My lord asked his servants,(AS) ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’(AT) 20 And we answered, ‘We have an aged father, and there is a young son born to him in his old age.(AU) His brother is dead,(AV) and he is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’(AW)
21 “Then you said to your servants,(AX) ‘Bring him down to me so I can see him for myself.’(AY) 22 And we said to my lord,(AZ) ‘The boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves him, his father will die.’(BA) 23 But you told your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’(BB) 24 When we went back to your servant my father,(BC) we told him what my lord(BD) had said.(BE)
25 “Then our father said, ‘Go back and buy a little more food.’(BF) 26 But we said, ‘We cannot go down. Only if our youngest brother is with us will we go. We cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’(BG)
27 “Your servant my father(BH) said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons.(BI) 28 One of them went away from me, and I said, “He has surely been torn to pieces.”(BJ) And I have not seen him since.(BK) 29 If you take this one from me too and harm comes to him, you will bring my gray head down to the grave(BL) in misery.’(BM)
30 “So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father,(BN) and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life,(BO) 31 sees that the boy isn’t there, he will die.(BP) Your servants(BQ) will bring the gray head of our father down to the grave(BR) in sorrow. 32 Your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father. I said, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my father, all my life!’(BS)
33 “Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave(BT) in place of the boy,(BU) and let the boy return with his brothers. 34 How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let me see the misery(BV) that would come on my father.”(BW)

44 And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's mouth.
2 And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack's mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.
3 As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.
4 And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?
5 Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.
6 And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words.
7 And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing:
8 Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks' mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord's house silver or gold?
9 With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord's bondmen.
10 And he said, Now also let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be blameless.
11 Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.
12 And he searched, and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.
13 Then they rent their clothes, and laded every man his ass, and returned to the city.
14 And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph's house; for he was yet there: and they fell before him on the ground.
15 And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine?
16 And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord's servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.
17 And he said, God forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.
18 Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.
19 My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?
20 And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.
21 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.
22 And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.
23 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.
24 And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.
25 And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food.
26 And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man's face, except our youngest brother be with us.
27 And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons:
28 And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since:
29 And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
30 Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad's life;
31 It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.
32 For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever.
33 Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.
34 For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.
