Josef hos Potifar
39 (A) Josef hade förts ner till Egypten. Och Potifar, som var hovman hos farao och befälhavare för livvakterna, köpte honom av ismaeliterna som hade fört honom dit. 2 (B) Herren var med Josef, och han blev en man som lyckades med allt. Han var i sin egyptiske herres hus, 3 och hans herre såg att Herren var med honom, eftersom Herren lät allt han gjorde lyckas i hans hand. 4 Josef fann nåd för Potifars ögon och fick betjäna honom. Potifar satte honom över hela sitt hus och lämnade allt han ägde i Josefs händer. 5 (C) Från den stund han satte honom över sitt hus och alla sina ägodelar, välsignade Herren egyptierns hus för Josefs skull. Herrens välsignelse vilade över allt som var hans, både hemma och ute på marken. 6 Och han lämnade allt i Josefs händer. Med honom som hjälp bekymrade han sig inte om något annat än maten som han åt.
Josef var välväxt och såg bra ut. 7 Efter en tid hände det att hans herres hustru kastade sina blickar på honom och sade: ”Ligg med mig!” 8 Men han vägrade och sade till sin herres hustru: ”När min herre har mig i sin tjänst bekymrar han sig inte om något i huset. Allt han äger har han lämnat i mina händer. 9 Här i huset har han inte större makt än jag, och han har inte nekat mig någonting, utom dig eftersom du är hans hustru. Hur skulle jag då kunna göra något så ont och synda mot Gud?” 10 Och fast hon talade så till Josef dag efter dag, lyssnade han inte på henne. Han ville inte ligga hos henne eller vara tillsammans med henne.
11 Men en dag kom han in i huset för att utföra sitt arbete, och ingen av husfolket var därinne. 12 Då grep hon honom i manteln och sade: ”Ligg med mig!” Men han lämnade manteln i hennes hand och flydde och sprang ut. 13 När hon såg att han hade lämnat manteln i hennes hand och flytt, 14 ropade hon på sitt husfolk och sade till dem: ”Se här! Han har tagit hit till oss en hebreisk man som vill roa sig med oss[a]. Han kom in till mig och ville ligga med mig. Men jag skrek högt, 15 och när han hörde hur jag höjde rösten och skrek, lämnade han manteln hos mig och flydde och sprang ut.”
16 Sedan lät hon hans mantel ligga kvar hos sig tills hans herre kom hem. 17 Då berättade hon samma sak för honom. Hon sade: ”Den hebreiske tjänaren som du har tagit hit till oss, han kom in till mig för att roa sig med mig. 18 Men när jag höjde rösten och ropade, lämnade han sin mantel hos mig och flydde ut.” 19 När Josefs herre hörde sin hustru berätta för honom att hans tjänare hade gjort så mot henne, blev han rasande 20 (D) och satte Josef i fängelset, platsen där kungens fångar hölls fängslade. Där satt Josef i fängelset.
21 Men Herren var med Josef, och han gav honom nåd och lät honom bli vänligt bemött av föreståndaren för fängelset. 22 Han lät Josef ha ansvar för alla fångar i fängelset och göra allt som skulle göras där. 23 (E) Föreståndaren för fängelset bekymrade sig inte om något som Josef hade hand om, eftersom Herren var med honom och lät honom lyckas i allt han gjorde.

39 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.
2 And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
4 And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
5 And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
6 And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.
7 And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.
8 But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;
9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
10 And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.
11 And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.
12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.
13 And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,
14 That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:
15 And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out.
16 And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home.
17 And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me:
18 And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out.
19 And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled.
20 And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.
21 But the Lord was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.
23 The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the Lord was with him, and that which he did, the Lord made it to prosper.

Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife
39 Now Joseph(A) had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard,(B) bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.(C)
2 The Lord was with Joseph(D) so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him(E) and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did,(F) 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes(G) and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household,(H) and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.(I) 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household(J) of the Egyptian because of Joseph.(K) The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.(L) 6 So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care;(M) with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.
Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,(N) 7 and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”(O)
8 But he refused.(P) “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.(Q) 9 No one is greater in this house than I am.(R) My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”(S) 10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused(T) to go to bed with her or even be with her.
11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties,(U) and none of the household servants(V) was inside. 12 She caught him by his cloak(W) and said, “Come to bed with me!”(X) But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.(Y)
13 When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, 14 she called her household servants.(Z) “Look,” she said to them, “this Hebrew(AA) has been brought to us to make sport of us!(AB) He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed.(AC) 15 When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”(AD)
16 She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. 17 Then she told him this story:(AE) “That Hebrew(AF) slave(AG) you brought us came to me to make sport of me. 18 But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”
19 When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is how your slave treated me,” he burned with anger.(AH) 20 Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison,(AI) the place where the king’s prisoners were confined.
But while Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the Lord was with him;(AJ) he showed him kindness(AK) and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.(AL) 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.(AM) 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s(AN) care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.(AO)

39 Cuando José fue llevado[a] a Egipto, Potifar, un oficial egipcio de Faraón, capitán de la guardia, lo compró a[b] los ismaelitas(A) que lo habían llevado[c] allá. 2 Y el Señor estaba con José(B), que llegó a ser un hombre próspero, y estaba en la casa de su amo el egipcio. 3 Y vio su amo que el Señor estaba con él(C) y que el Señor hacía prosperar en su mano todo lo que él hacía(D). 4 Así encontró José gracia ante sus ojos y llegó a ser su siervo personal[d](E), y lo hizo mayordomo sobre su casa y entregó en su mano todo lo que poseía(F). 5 Y sucedió que desde el tiempo que lo hizo mayordomo sobre su casa y sobre todo lo que poseía, el Señor bendijo la casa del egipcio por causa de José(G); y la bendición del Señor estaba sobre todo lo que poseía en la casa y en el campo(H). 6 Así que todo lo que poseía lo dejó en mano de José, y con él allí no se preocupaba de[e] nada, excepto del pan que comía. Y era José de gallarda[f] figura y de hermoso parecer(I).
José y la mujer de Potifar
7 Sucedió después de estas cosas que la mujer de su amo miró[g] a José con deseo(J) y le dijo: Acuéstate conmigo(K). 8 Pero él rehusó(L) y dijo a la mujer de su amo: Estando yo aquí[h], mi amo no se preocupa de nada[i] en la casa, y ha puesto en mi mano todo lo que posee. 9 No hay nadie[j] más grande que yo en esta casa(M), y nada me ha rehusado excepto a ti, pues tú eres su mujer. ¿Cómo entonces iba yo a hacer esta gran maldad y pecar contra Dios(N)? 10 Y[k] ella insistía[l] a José día tras día, pero él no accedió a[m] acostarse con ella o a estar con ella. 11 Pero sucedió un día[n] que él entró en casa para hacer su trabajo, y no había ninguno de los hombres de la casa allí dentro; 12 entonces ella lo asió de la ropa, diciendo: ¡Acuéstate conmigo! Mas él le dejó su ropa en la mano, y salió huyendo afuera. 13 Y[o] cuando ella vio que él había dejado su ropa en sus manos y había huido afuera, 14 llamó a los hombres de su casa y les dijo: Mirad, nos ha traído un hebreo[p] para que se burle de nosotros; vino a mí para acostarse conmigo, pero yo grité a gran voz. 15 Y sucedió que cuando él oyó que yo alzaba la voz y gritaba, dejó su ropa junto a mí y salió huyendo afuera. 16 Y ella dejó junto a sí la ropa de él hasta que su señor vino a casa. 17 Entonces ella le habló con[q] estas palabras, diciendo: Vino a mí el esclavo hebreo que nos trajiste, para burlarse de mí(O); 18 y[r] cuando levanté la voz y grité, él dejó su ropa junto a mí y huyó afuera.
José arrojado a la cárcel
19 Y aconteció que cuando su señor escuchó las palabras que su mujer le habló, diciendo: Esto es lo que[s] tu esclavo me hizo, se encendió su ira(P). 20 Entonces el amo de José lo tomó y lo echó en la cárcel(Q), en el lugar donde se encerraba a los presos del rey; y allí permaneció en la cárcel. 21 Mas el Señor estaba con José(R) y le extendió su misericordia, y le concedió gracia ante los ojos del jefe de la cárcel(S). 22 Y el jefe de la cárcel confió en mano de José a todos los presos que estaban en la cárcel(T), y de todo lo que allí se hacía él era responsable. 23 El jefe de la cárcel no supervisaba nada que estuviera bajo la responsabilidad de José[t](U), porque el Señor estaba con él(V), y todo lo que él emprendía, el Señor lo hacía prosperar(W).
