Abram räddar Lot

14 Vid den här tiden startade Amrafel, Shinars kung, Arjok, Ellasars kung, Kedorlaomer, Elams kung, och Tidal, Gojims kung, 2 ett krig mot Bera, Sodoms kung, Birsha, Gomorras kung, Shinav, Admas kung, Shemever, Sevojims kung och kungen i Bela (som senare kallades Soar).

3 Dessa kungar förenade sina arméer i Siddimdalen, dalen vid Döda havet. 4 Under tolv år hade de alla varit undersåtar till kung Kedorlaomer, men på det trettonde året gjorde de uppror.

5 Under det fjortonde året kom Kedorlaomer dit med sina allierade. Han segrade över refaéerna i Ashterot Karnajim, över suséerna i Ham, över eméerna i Shave Kirjatajim. 6 Horéerna, som bodde på berget Seir, drev han ända till El Paran vid öknen.

7 De vände sedan om till En Mishpat, som senare kallades Kadesh, och erövrade hela amalekiternas område, liksom amoréernas, som bodde i Haseson Tamar.

8 Kungarna i Sodom, Gomorra, Adma, Sevojim och Bela, nuvarande Soar, drog ut och ordnade sina arméer till strid i Siddimdalen 9 mot Elams kung Kedorlaomer, Gojims kung Tidal, Shinars kung Amrafel och Ellasars kung Arjok, fem kungar mot fyra. 10 Dalen var full av gropar med jordbeck. När armén som tillhörde kungarna i Sodom och Gomorra flydde, föll några i groparna och resten flydde till bergen. 11 Segrarna plundrade Sodom och Gomorra och tog med sig all deras egendom och mat. Sedan drog de därifrån.

12 De tog också med sig Lot, Abrams brorson, som bodde i Sodom, och allt han ägde. 13 En av de män som lyckats fly kom och berättade för hebrén Abram vad som hade hänt. Abram hade slagit läger bland ekarna som tillhörde amorén Mamre, bror till Eshkol och Aner, vilka alla var Abrams allierade.

14 När Abram fick reda på att hans brorson Lot hade tagits till fånga, sammankallade han männen som var födda i hans hushåll, 318 män sammanlagt, och förföljde fienderna ända till Dan. 15 Den natten delade han upp sina män, och de anföll dem och förföljde den flyende armén till Hova, norr om Damaskus. 16 Han fick tillbaka hela bytet som de tagit, brorsonen Lot, och alla Lots ägodelar, kvinnorna och de andra. 17 När Abram återvände från sitt anfall mot Kedorlaomer och de andra kungarna, kom kungen i Sodom ut för att möta honom i Shavedalen, som senare kallades Kungsdalen.

18 Kungen i Salem[a], Melkisedek, som var präst åt Gud den Högste, kom och gav Abram bröd och vin. 19 Sedan välsignade Melkisedek Abram:

”Må Gud den Högste, himlens och jordens Skapare,
    välsigna Abram!
20 Välsignad vare Gud den Högste,
    som har överlämnat dina fiender till dig!”

Då gav Abram Melkisedek en tiondel av allting.

21 Kungen i Sodom vädjade till Abram: ”Ge mig bara folket. Behåll själv hela bytet.” 22 Men Abram svarade honom: ”Jag lyfter min hand och svär vid Herren Gud den Högste, himlens och jordens skapare, 23 att jag inte ska ta så mycket som en enda tråd eller sandalrem från dig. Du ska inte kunna säga: ’Jag har gjort Abram rik.’ 24 Jag ska ingenting ha. Det räcker med det som mina unga män har ätit av din mat. Men ge en del av bytet till mina stridskamrater Aner, Eshkol och Mamre.”

14 På den tid då Amrafel var konung i Sinear, Arjok konung i Ellasar, Kedorlaomer konung i Elam och Tideal konung över Goim, hände sig

2 att dessa begynte krig mot Bera, konungen i Sodom, Birsa, konungen i Gomorra, Sinab, konungen i Adma, Semeber, konungen i Seboim, och mot konungen i Bela, det är Soar.

3 De förenade sig alla och tågade till Siddimsdalen, där Salthavet nu är.

4 I tolv år hade de varit under Kedorlaomer, men i det trettonde året hade de avfallit.

5 Så kom nu i det fjortonde året Kedorlaomer med de konungar som voro på hans sida; och de slogo rafaéerna i Asterot-Karnaim, suséerna i Ham, eméerna i Save-Kirjataim

6 och horéerna på deras berg Seir och drevo dem ända till El-Paran vid öknen.

7 Sedan vände de om och kommo till En-Mispat, det är Kades, och härjade amalekiternas hela land; de slogo ock amoréerna som bodde i Hasason-Tamar.

8 Då drogo konungen i Sodom, konungen i Gomorra, konungen i Adma, konungen i Seboim och konungen i Bela, det är Soar, ut och ställde upp sig i Siddimsdalen till strid mot dem --

9 mot Kedorlaomer, konungen i Elam, Tideal, konungen över Goim, Amrafel, konungen i Sinear, och Arjok, konungen i Ellasar, fyra konungar mot de fem.

10 Men Siddimsdalen var full av jordbecksgropar. Och konungarna i Sodom och Gomorra måste fly och föllo då i dessa, och de som kommo undan flydde till bergsbygden.

11 Så togo de allt gods som fanns i Sodom och Gomorra, och alla livsmedel där, och tågade bort;

12 de togo ock med sig Lot, Abrams brorson, och hans ägodelar, när de tågade bort; ty denne bodde i Sodom.

13 Men en av de räddade kom och berättade detta för Abram, hebréen; denne bodde vid den terebintlund som tillhörde amoréen Mamre, Eskols och Aners broder, och dessa voro i förbund med Abram.

14 Då nu Abram hörde att hans frände var fången, lät han sina mest beprövade tjänare, sådana som voro födda i hans hus, tre hundra aderton män, rycka ut, och förföljde fienderna ända till Dan.

15 Och han delade sitt folk och överföll dem så om natten med sina tjänare och slog dem, och förföljde dem sedan ända till Hoba, norr om Damaskus,

16 och tog tillbaka allt godset; sin frände Lot och hans ägodelar tog han ock tillbaka, ävensom kvinnorna och det övriga folket.

17 Då han nu var på återvägen, sedan han hade slagit Kedorlaomer och de konungar som voro på hans sida, gick konungen i Sodom honom till mötes i Savedalen, det är Konungsdalen.

18 Och Melki-Sedek, konungen i Salem, lät bära ut bröd och vin; denne var präst åt Gud den Högste.

19 Och han välsignade honom och sade: »Välsignad vare Abram av Gud den Högste, himmelens och jordens skapare!

20 Och välsignad vare Gud den Högste, som har givit dina ovänner i din hand!» Och Abram gav honom tionde av allt.

21 Och konungen i Sodom sade till Abram: »Giv mig folket; godset må du behålla för dig själv.»

22 Men Abram svarade konungen i Sodom: »Jag lyfter min hand upp till HERREN, till Gud den Högste, himmelens och jordens skapare, och betygar

23 att jag icke vill taga ens en tråd eller en skorem, än mindre något annat som tillhör dig. Du skall icke kunna säga: 'Jag har riktat Abram.'

24 Jag vill intet hava; det är nog med vad mina män hava förtärt och den del som tillkommer mina följeslagare. Aner, Eskol och Mamre, de må få sin del.»

Abram Rescues Lot

14 And it happened that in the days of Amraphel, the king of Shinar, Arioch, the king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer, the king of Elam, and Tidal, the king of Goiim, 2 made war with Bera, the king of Sodom, and Birsha, the king of Gomorrah, Shinab, the king of Admah, and Shemeber, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar). 3 All these joined forces at the valley of Siddim (that is, the sea of the salt). 4 Twelve years they had served Kedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled. 5 In the fourteenth year Kedorlaomer and the kings who were with him came and defeated the Rephaim in Ashteroth-Karnaim, and the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in Shaveh-Kiriathaim, 6 And the Horites in their hill country of Seir, as far as El-Paran, which is at the wilderness. 7 Then[a] they turned back and came to En-Mishpat (that is, Kadesh). And they defeated the whole territory of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who were living in Hazazon-Tamar. 8 Then[b] the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) went out, and they took up battle position[c] in the Valley of Siddim 9 with Kedorlaomer, king of Elam, and Tidal, king of Goiim, and Amraphel, king of Shinar, and Arioch, king of Ellasar, four kings against five. 10 Now[d] the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits.[e] And the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled and fell into them,[f] but the rest fled to the mountains. 11 So[g] they[h] took all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their provisions, and they left. 12 And they[i] took Lot, the son of the brother of Abram, and his possessions, and left. (Now he had been living in Sodom.) 13 Then[j] one who escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew. And he was living at the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner. They were allies with Abram.[k] 14 When[l] Abram heard that his relative[m] was taken captive, he summoned his trained men, born in his house, three hundred and eighteen of them, and he went in pursuit up to Dan. 15 And he divided his trained men against them at night, he and his servants. And he defeated them and pursued them to Hobah, which is north of Damascus. 16 And he brought back all the possessions. And he also brought back Lot, his relative,[n] and his possessions, and the women and the people as well.

Abram Meets Melchizedek

17 After his return from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the Valley of the King). 18 And Melchizedek, the king of Salem, brought out bread and wine. (He was the priest of God Most High). 19 And he blessed him and said,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
    Maker of heaven and earth.
20 And blessed be God Most High
    who delivered your enemies into your hand.”

And he[o] gave to him a tenth of everything. 21 And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people, but the possessions take for yourself.” 22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to Yahweh, God Most High, Maker of heaven and earth, 23 that neither a thread nor[p] a thong of a sandal would I take from all that belongs to you, that you might not say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ 24 Nothing besides what[q] the servants have eaten and the share of the men who went out with me will I take. Let Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre take their share.”

Abram Rescues Lot

14 At the time when Amraphel was king of Shinar,[a](A) Arioch king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer(B) king of Elam(C) and Tidal king of Goyim, 2 these kings went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim,(D) and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).(E) 3 All these latter kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim(F) (that is, the Dead Sea Valley(G)). 4 For twelve years they had been subject to Kedorlaomer,(H) but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

5 In the fourteenth year, Kedorlaomer(I) and the kings allied with him went out and defeated the Rephaites(J) in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites(K) in Shaveh Kiriathaim 6 and the Horites(L) in the hill country of Seir,(M) as far as El Paran(N) near the desert. 7 Then they turned back and went to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh),(O) and they conquered the whole territory of the Amalekites,(P) as well as the Amorites(Q) who were living in Hazezon Tamar.(R)

8 Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah,(S) the king of Admah, the king of Zeboyim(T) and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar)(U) marched out and drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Siddim(V) 9 against Kedorlaomer(W) king of Elam,(X) Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five. 10 Now the Valley of Siddim(Y) was full of tar(Z) pits, and when the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah(AA) fled, some of the men fell into them and the rest fled to the hills.(AB) 11 The four kings seized all the goods(AC) of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away. 12 They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot(AD) and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom.

13 A man who had escaped came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew.(AE) Now Abram was living near the great trees of Mamre(AF) the Amorite, a brother[b] of Eshkol(AG) and Aner, all of whom were allied with Abram. 14 When Abram heard that his relative(AH) had been taken captive, he called out the 318 trained(AI) men born in his household(AJ) and went in pursuit as far as Dan.(AK) 15 During the night Abram divided his men(AL) to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.(AM) 16 He recovered(AN) all the goods(AO) and brought back his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the other people.

17 After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer(AP) and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom(AQ) came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).(AR)

18 Then Melchizedek(AS) king of Salem(AT) brought out bread(AU) and wine.(AV) He was priest of God Most High,(AW) 19 and he blessed Abram,(AX) saying,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,(AY)
    Creator of heaven and earth.(AZ)
20 And praise be to God Most High,(BA)
    who delivered your enemies into your hand.”

Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.(BB)

21 The king of Sodom(BC) said to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods(BD) for yourself.”

22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom,(BE) “With raised hand(BF) I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High,(BG) Creator of heaven and earth,(BH) 23 that I will accept nothing belonging to you,(BI) not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ 24 I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me—to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre.(BJ) Let them have their share.”
