Josef hos Potifar

39 Josef hade förts ner till Egypten. Och Potifar, som var hovman hos farao och befälhavare för drabanterna, köpte honom av ismaeliterna som hade fört honom dit. 2 Herren var med Josef och allt lyckades för honom. Han var i sin egyptiske herres hus, 3 och hans herre såg att Herren var med honom, ty allt som han gjorde lät Herren lyckas väl. 4 Josef fann nåd för Potifars ögon och fick betjäna honom. Potifar satte honom över hela sitt hus, och allt han ägde lämnade han åt Josef att sköta om. 5 Från den stund han hade satt honom över sitt hus och alla sina ägodelar, välsignade Herren egyptierns hus för Josefs skull. Herrens välsignelse vilade över allt han ägde, både hemma och ute på marken. 6 Och han lämnade allt i Josefs vård och sedan han hade fått honom till sin hjälp bekymrade han sig inte om något annat än maten som han åt.

Josef var välväxt och såg bra ut. 7 Efter en tid hände det att hans herres hustru kastade sina blickar på honom och sade: "Ligg med mig!" 8 Men han vägrade och sade till sin herres hustru: "Ända sedan min herre tog mig i sin tjänst bekymrar han sig inte om något i huset. Allt han äger har han lämnat åt mig att sköta om. 9 Här i huset har han inte större makt än jag, och ingenting annat än dig har han förbehållit sig eftersom du är hans hustru. Hur skulle jag då kunna göra så mycket ont och synda mot Gud?" 10 Fast hon dag efter dag talade på det sättet till Josef, lyssnade han inte på henne och ville inte ligga med henne eller vara tillsammans med henne.

11 Men en dag då han kom in i huset för att utföra sitt arbete och ingen av husfolket fanns inne, 12 grep hon honom i manteln och sade: "Ligg med mig!" Men han lämnade manteln i hennes hand och flydde därifrån. 13 När hon såg att han hade lämnat manteln i hennes hand och flytt, 14 ropade hon på sitt husfolk och sade till dem: "Se här, han har fört hit till oss en hebreisk man som vill locka oss till lättsinne. Han kom in till mig och ville ligga med mig. Men jag skrek högt, 15 och när han hörde hur jag höjde rösten och skrek, lämnade han kvar manteln hos mig och flydde ur huset."

16 Sedan lät hon hans mantel ligga kvar hos sig till dess hans herre kom hem. 17 Då berättade hon samma sak för honom. Hon sade: "Den hebreiske tjänaren, som du har fört hit till oss, kom in till mig och ville locka mig till lättsinne. 18 Men när jag höjde rösten och ropade, lämnade han sin mantel hos mig och flydde ut ur huset." 19 När Josefs herre hörde sin hustru berätta för honom att hans tjänare hade handlat så mot henne, blev han rasande 20 och satte Josef i det fängelse där kungens fångar hölls fängslade. Där satt Josef som fånge.

21 Men Herren var med Josef och visade honom nåd och lät honom bli vänligt bemött av föreståndaren för fängelset. 22 Han lät alla fångar i fängelset stå under Josefs uppsikt, och allt som skulle göras där fick Josef göra. 23 Föreståndaren för fängelset bekymrade sig inte om något som Josef hade hand om, eftersom Herren var med honom och lät honom lyckas i allt han gjorde.

Josef kastas i fängelse

39 När Josef kom fram till Egypten som fånge till de ismaelitiska köpmännen, köptes han av Potifar, som var medlem av Faraos personliga stab och kapten över kungens livvakt och dessutom riksbödel.

2 Herren välsignade Josef i hans husbondes hus, och Josef lyckades med allt han gjorde.

3 När Potifar lade märke till detta och förstod att Herren var med Josef och att han lyckades med allt han företog sig,

4 blev han mycket nöjd med Josef och gjorde honom till sin närmaste man. Josef fick ansvaret över hela hushållet och över allt som Potifar ägde.

5 Från den dagen välsignade Herren Potifar och hela hans hus på grund av Josef. Gud var med i allt Potifar företog sig, och allt fungerade utmärkt både i huset och ute på fälten.

6 Josef fick ansvar för alltsammans. Det enda Potifar själv avgjorde var vad han skulle äta.Josef var välbyggd och såg bra ut.

7 En dag började däeför Potifars fru göra närmanden mot honom och föreslog att han skulle komma och ligga med henne.

8 Josef vägrade och sa till henne: Min husbonde litar på mig i allt.

9 Själv har han inte mer makt här än vad jag har! Han har inte hållit undan något för mig utom dig, eftersom du är hans hustru. Hur skulle jag kunna göra något så ont som detta? Det skulle vara en stor synd emot Gud.

10 Men hon fortsatte med sina förslag dag efter dag. Josef vägrade att lyssna till henne och höll sig ur vägen så mycket som möjligt.

11 En dag när han var ensam med sina sysslor i huset

12 kom hon och grep tag i hans kläder och krävde att han skulle ligga med henne. Han slet sig loss, men rocken gled av honom, och hon stod där med den i handen när han flydde från huset.

13 När hon såg att allt hon hade kvar var hans rock,

14-15 ropade hon på de andra tjänarna.Den där hebreiske slaven bara förolämpar oss! snyftade hon. Han försökte våldta mig, men när jag skrek sprang han sin väg och glömde sina kläder.

16 Hon behöll rocken, och när hennes man kom hem på kvällen

17 berättade hon för honom vad som hänt.Den där hebreiske slaven, som du har här, försökte våldta mig,

18 men jag ropade på hjälp. Han flydde och lämnade kvar sin rock!

19 När Potifar hörde hustruns berättelse blev han rasande.

20 Han spärrade in Josef i det fängelse där kungen hade sina fångar.

21 Men Herren var med Josef också där och var god emot honom. Josef blev så omtyckt av förmannen för vakterna

22 att denne lämnade över hela skötseln av fängelset till Josef och lät honom få ansvaret för alla de andra fångarna.

23 Sedan hade förmannen inget att bekymra sig över, för Josef tog hand om allt, och Herren var med honom så att allt lyckades väl för honom.

Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife

39 Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt.[a] An Egyptian named Potiphar, an official of Pharaoh and the captain of the guard,[b] purchased him from[c] the Ishmaelites who had brought him there. 2 The Lord was with Joseph. He was successful[d] and lived[e] in the household of his Egyptian master. 3 His master observed that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made everything he was doing successful.[f] 4 So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal attendant.[g] Potiphar appointed Joseph[h] overseer of his household and put him in charge[i] of everything he owned. 5 From the time[j] Potiphar[k] appointed him over his household and over all that he owned, the Lord blessed[l] the Egyptian’s household for Joseph’s sake. The blessing of the Lord was on everything that he had, both[m] in his house and in his fields.[n] 6 So Potiphar[o] left[p] everything he had in Joseph’s care;[q] he gave no thought[r] to anything except the food he ate.[s]

Now Joseph was well built and good-looking.[t] 7 Soon after these things, his master’s wife took notice of[u] Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me.”[v] 8 But he refused, saying[w] to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not give any thought[x] to his household with me here,[y] and everything that he owns he has put into my care.[z] 9 There is no one greater in this household than I am. He has withheld nothing from me except you because you are his wife. So how could I do[aa] such a great evil and sin against God?” 10 Even though she continued to speak[ab] to Joseph day after day, he did not respond[ac] to her invitation to go to bed with her.[ad]

11 One day[ae] he went into the house to do his work when none of the household servants[af] were there in the house. 12 She grabbed him by his outer garment, saying, “Come to bed[ag] with me!” But he left his outer garment in her hand and ran[ah] outside.[ai] 13 When she saw that he had left his outer garment in her hand and had run outside, 14 she called for her household servants and said to them, “See, my husband brought[aj] in a Hebrew man[ak] to us to humiliate us.[al] He tried to go to bed with me,[am] but I screamed loudly.[an] 15 When he heard me raise[ao] my voice and scream, he left his outer garment beside me and ran outside.”

16 So she laid his outer garment beside her until his master came home. 17 This is what she said to him:[ap] “That Hebrew slave[aq] you brought to us tried to humiliate me,[ar] 18 but when I raised my voice and screamed, he left his outer garment and ran outside.”

19 When his master heard his wife say,[as] “This is the way[at] your slave treated me,”[au] he became furious.[av] 20 Joseph’s master took him and threw him into the prison,[aw] the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. So he was there in the prison.[ax]

21 But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him kindness.[ay] He granted him favor in the sight of the prison warden.[az] 22 The warden put all the prisoners under Joseph’s care. He was in charge of whatever they were doing.[ba] 23 The warden did not concern himself[bb] with anything that was in Joseph’s[bc] care because the Lord was with him and whatever he was doing the Lord was making successful.

  13. Genesis 39:5 tn Heb “in the house and in the field.” The word “both” has been supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.
  14. Genesis 39:5 sn The passage gives us a good picture of Joseph as a young man who was responsible and faithful, both to his master and to his God. This happened within a very short time of his being sold into Egypt. It undermines the view that Joseph was a liar, a tattletale, and an arrogant adolescent.

  19. Genesis 39:6 sn The expression except the food he ate probably refers to Potiphar’s private affairs and should not be limited literally to what he ate.

  21. Genesis 39:7 tn Heb “she lifted up her eyes toward,” an expression that emphasizes her deliberate and careful scrutiny of him.

Genesis 39:7 tn Heb “lie down with.” The verb שָׁכַב (shakhav) “to lie down” can be a euphemism for going to bed for sexual relations.sn The story of Joseph and Potiphar’s wife has long been connected with the wisdom warnings about the strange woman who tries to seduce the young man with her boldness and directness (see Prov 5-7, especially 7:6-27). 11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties,(U) and none of the household servants(V) was inside. 12 She caught him by his cloak(W) and said, “Come to bed with me!”(X) But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.(Y)

13 When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, 14 she called her household servants.(Z) “Look,” she said to them, “this Hebrew(AA) has been brought to us to make sport of us!(AB) He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed.(AC) 15 When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”(AD)

16 She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. 17 Then she told him this story:(AE) “That Hebrew(AF) slave(AG) you brought us came to me to make sport of me. 18 But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”

19 When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is how your slave treated me,” he burned with anger.(AH) 20 Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison,(AI) the place where the king’s prisoners were confined.

But while Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the Lord was with him;(AJ) he showed him kindness(AK) and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.(AL) 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.(AM) 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s(AN) care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.(AO)
