IX. ESAUS FORTSATTA HISTORIA 36:1-37:1
36 Detta är Esaus fortsatta historia. Esau är densamme som Edom.
2 Esau hade tagit sig hustrur bland Kanaans döttrar: Ada, hetiten Elons dotter, och Oholibama, dotter till Ana och sondotter till hiveen Sibon, 3 samt Basemat, dotter till Ismael och syster till Nebajot. 4 Och Ada födde Elifas åt Esau och Basemat födde Reguel. 5 Oholibama födde Jeus, Jalam och Kora. Detta var Esaus söner och de föddes åt honom i Kanaans land. 6 Esau tog med sig sina hustrur, sina söner och döttrar och allt sitt husfolk, sin boskap, alla sina dragdjur och all annan egendom som han hade skaffat sig i Kanaans land och flyttade till ett annat land, bort från sin bror Jakob. 7 Deras ägodelar var nämligen så stora att de inte kunde bo tillsammans. Landet där de uppehöll sig räckte inte till åt dem för deras boskapshjordars skull. 8 Esau bosatte sig i Seirs bergsbygd. Esau är densamme som Edom.

9 Detta är Esaus fortsatta historia. Han blev stamfader till edomiterna i Seirs bergsbygd. 10 Och detta är namnen på Esaus söner: Elifas, son till Esaus hustru Ada, och Reguel, son till Esaus hustru Basemat.
11 Elifas söner var Teman, Omar, Sefo, Gatam och Kenas.
12 Timna, som var Elifas, Esaus sons, bihustru, födde Amalek åt Elifas. Dessa var söner till Esaus hustru Ada.
13 Reguels söner var Nahat och Sera, Samma och Missa. Dessa var söner till Esaus hustru Basemat.

22 Lotans söner var Hori och Hemam, och Lotans syster var Timna.
23 Sobals söner var Alvan, Manahat och Ebal, Sefo och Onam.
24 Sibons söner var Aja och Ana. Det var denne Ana som fann de varma källorna i öknen, när han vaktade sin fader Sibons åsnor.
25 Anas barn var Dison och Oholibama, Anas dotter.
26 Disons söner var Hemdan, Esban, Jitran och Keran.
27 Esers söner var Bilhan, Saavan och Akan.

35 När Husam dog blev Hadad, Bedads son, kung efter honom. Det var han som slog midjaniterna på Moabs mark, och hans stad hette Avit.

40 Detta är namnen på Esaus stamfurstar efter deras släkter och orter: furstarna Timna, Alva, Jetet, 41 Oholibama, Ela, Pinon, 42 Kenas, Teman, Mibsar, 43 Magdiel och Iram. Dessa var alltså edomiternas stamfader Esaus furstar efter deras boplatser i det land som de hade tagit i besittning.

36 Now this is the history of the descendants of Esau, that is, Edom.
2 Esau took his wives from the women of Canaan: Adah daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Oholibamah daughter of Anah, the son of Zibeon the Hivite,
3 And Basemath, Ishmael’s daughter, sister of Nebaioth.
4 Adah bore to Esau, Eliphaz; Basemath bore Reuel;
5 And Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. These are the sons of Esau born to him in Canaan.
6 Now Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the members of his household, his cattle, all his beasts, and all his possessions which he had obtained in the land of Canaan, and he went into a land away from his brother Jacob.
7 For their great flocks and herds and possessions [which they had collected] made it impossible for them to dwell together; the land in which they were strangers could not support them because of their livestock.
8 So Esau dwelt in the hill country of Seir; Esau is Edom.
9 And this is the history of the descendants of Esau the father of the Edomites in the hill country of Seir.
10 These are the names of Esau’s sons: Eliphaz, the son of Adah, Esau’s wife, and Reuel, the son of Basemath, Esau’s wife.
11 And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.
12 And Timna was a concubine of Eliphaz, Esau’s son; and she bore Amalek to Eliphaz. These are the sons of Adah, Esau’s wife.
13 These are the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These are the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife.
14 And these are the sons of Oholibamah daughter of Anah, the son of Zibeon, Esau’s wife. She bore to Esau: Jeush, Jalam, and Korah.
15 These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau: The sons of Eliphaz the firstborn of Esau: Chiefs Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz,

17 These are the sons of Reuel, Esau’s son: Chiefs Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, Mizzah. These are the chiefs of Reuel in the land of Edom; they are the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife.

20 These are the sons of Seir the Horite, the inhabitants of the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,
21 Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These are the chiefs of the [a]Horites, the sons of Seir in the land of Edom.
22 The sons of Lotan are Hori and Hemam; and Lotan’s sister is Timna.
23 The sons of Shobal are these: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.
24 These are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah. This is the Anah who found the hot springs in the wilderness as he pastured the donkeys of Zibeon his father.
25 The children of Anah are these: Dishon and Oholibamah daughter of Anah [Esau’s wife].
26 These are the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran.
27 Ezer’s sons are these: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan.
28 The sons of Dishan are these: Uz and Aran.
29 The Horite chiefs are these: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,
30 Dishon, Ezer, Dishan. These are the Horite chiefs, according to their clans, in the land of Seir.
31 And these are the kings who reigned in Edom before any king reigned over the Israelites:
32 Bela son of Beor reigned in Edom. And the name of his city was Dinhabah.
33 Now Bela died, and Jobab son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his stead.
34 Then Jobab died, and Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his stead.
35 And Husham died, and Hadad son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the country of Moab, reigned in his stead. The name of his [enclosed] city was Avith.
36 Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah succeeded him.
37 Then Samlah died, and Shaul of Rehoboth on the river [Euphrates] reigned in his stead.
38 And Shaul died, and Baal-hanan son of Achbor reigned in his stead.
39 Baal-hanan son of Achbor died, and then Hadar reigned. His [enclosed] city was Pau; his wife’s name was Mehetabel daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab.
40 And these are the names of the chiefs of Esau, according to their families and places of residence, by their names: Chiefs Timna, Alvah, Jetheth,
41 Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon,
42 Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar,
43 Magdiel, and Iram. These are the chiefs of Edom [that is, of Esau the father of the Edomites], according to their dwelling places in their land.

- Genesis 36:21 Because of the similarity of the word ‘Horites’ to a Hebrew word for “cave,” the term Horite was formerly interpreted as “cave dweller.” But later archaeological discoveries have shown that the Horites are not to be explained as cave dwellers, but are to be identified with an important group in the Near East in patriarchal times (J. P. Free, Archaeology and Bible History). In fact, neither the Bible nor archaeology has any proof of aboriginal “cavemen.” Cities of great antiquity have been unearthed with ever-increasing evidence that “when civilization appears it is already fully grown,” and “pre-Semitic culture springs into view ready-made” (Hall, History of the Near East).

36 This is the account(C) of the family line of Esau (that is, Edom).(D)
2 Esau took his wives from the women of Canaan:(E) Adah daughter of Elon the Hittite,(F) and Oholibamah(G) daughter of Anah(H) and granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite(I)— 3 also Basemath(J) daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth.(K)
4 Adah bore Eliphaz to Esau, Basemath bore Reuel,(L) 5 and Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam and Korah.(M) These were the sons of Esau, who were born to him in Canaan.

20 These were the sons of Seir the Horite,(AS) who were living in the region:

Hori and Homam.[b] Timna was Lotan’s sister.
23 The sons of Shobal:
Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho and Onam.

Aiah and Anah. This is the Anah who discovered the hot springs[c](AW) in the desert while he was grazing the donkeys(AX) of his father Zibeon.

Dishon and Oholibamah(AZ) daughter of Anah.

Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran and Keran.
27 The sons of Ezer:
Bilhan, Zaavan and Akan.

29 These were the Horite chiefs:
Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,(BA) 30 Dishon, Ezer and Dishan. These were the Horite chiefs,(BB) according to their divisions, in the land of Seir.

31 These were the kings who reigned in Edom before any Israelite king(BD) reigned:
32 Bela son of Beor became king of Edom. His city was named Dinhabah.
33 When Bela died, Jobab son of Zerah from Bozrah(BE) succeeded him as king.
34 When Jobab died, Husham from the land of the Temanites(BF) succeeded him as king.
35 When Husham died, Hadad son of Bedad, who defeated Midian(BG) in the country of Moab,(BH) succeeded him as king. His city was named Avith.
36 When Hadad died, Samlah from Masrekah succeeded him as king.
37 When Samlah died, Shaul from Rehoboth(BI) on the river succeeded him as king.
38 When Shaul died, Baal-Hanan son of Akbor succeeded him as king.
39 When Baal-Hanan son of Akbor died, Hadad[e] succeeded him as king. His city was named Pau, and his wife’s name was Mehetabel daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-Zahab.
40 These were the chiefs(BJ) descended from Esau, by name, according to their clans and regions:
Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, 41 Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, 42 Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, 43 Magdiel and Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom, according to their settlements in the land they occupied.
This is the family line of Esau, the father of the Edomites.(BK)

3 And Bashemath Ishmael's daughter, sister of Nebajoth.
4 And Adah bare to Esau Eliphaz; and Bashemath bare Reuel;
5 And Aholibamah bare Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah: these are the sons of Esau, which were born unto him in the land of Canaan.

24 And these are the children of Zibeon; both Ajah, and Anah: this was that Anah that found the mules in the wilderness, as he fed the asses of Zibeon his father.
25 And the children of Anah were these; Dishon, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah.
26 And these are the children of Dishon; Hemdan, and Eshban, and Ithran, and Cheran.
27 The children of Ezer are these; Bilhan, and Zaavan, and Akan.
28 The children of Dishan are these; Uz, and Aran.
29 These are the dukes that came of the Horites; duke Lotan, duke Shobal, duke Zibeon, duke Anah,
30 Duke Dishon, duke Ezer, duke Dishan: these are the dukes that came of Hori, among their dukes in the land of Seir.
31 And these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom, before there reigned any king over the children of Israel.
32 And Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom: and the name of his city was Dinhabah.
33 And Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his stead.
34 And Jobab died, and Husham of the land of Temani reigned in his stead.
35 And Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who smote Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Avith.
36 And Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his stead.
37 And Samlah died, and Saul of Rehoboth by the river reigned in his stead.
38 And Saul died, and Baalhanan the son of Achbor reigned in his stead.
39 And Baalhanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Pau; and his wife's name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab.
40 And these are the names of the dukes that came of Esau, according to their families, after their places, by their names; duke Timnah, duke Alvah, duke Jetheth,
41 Duke Aholibamah, duke Elah, duke Pinon,
42 Duke Kenaz, duke Teman, duke Mibzar,
43 Duke Magdiel, duke Iram: these be the dukes of Edom, according to their habitations in the land of their possession: he is Esau the father of the Edomites.
