Jakob flyr från Laban
31 Jakob fick höra hur Labans söner sade: "Jakob har tagit allt vad vår far ägde. Av det som tillhörde vår far har han skaffat sig hela denna rikedom." 2 Jakob märkte också att Laban inte såg på honom med samma ögon som förut. 3 Då sade Herren till Jakob: "Vänd tillbaka till dina fäders land och till din släkt. Jag är med dig."
4 Och Jakob sände bud efter Rakel och Lea och bad dem komma ut på marken till hans hjord, 5 och han sade till dem: "Jag märker att er far inte ser på mig med samma ögon som förut, men min fars Gud har varit med mig. 6 Ni vet själva att jag har tjänat er far med all min kraft. 7 Ändå har er far lurat mig och ändrat min lön tio gånger, men Gud har inte tillåtit honom att göra mig något ont. 8 När han sade: De spräckliga skall vara din lön, då fick hela hjorden spräcklig avkomma. Och när han sade: De strimmiga skall vara din lön, då fick hela hjorden strimmig avkomma. 9 Så har Gud tagit er fars boskap och gett den åt mig.
10 När parningstiden för småboskapen kom hade jag en dröm. Jag lyfte min blick och fick se att hannarna, som betäckte småboskapen, var strimmiga, spräckliga och fläckiga. 11 Och Guds ängel sade till mig i drömmen: Jakob! Jag svarade: Här är jag. 12 Då sade han: Lyft blicken och se hur alla hannar som betäcker småboskapen är strimmiga, spräckliga och fläckiga. Jag har sett allt som Laban gör mot dig. 13 Jag är Betels Gud. Det var där du smorde en minnessten och gav mig ett löfte. Bryt nu upp och drag ut ur detta land och vänd tillbaka till ditt fosterland." 14 Då sade Rakel och Lea: "Har vi kvar någon lott eller arvedel i vår fars egendom? 15 Var vi inte som främlingar för honom när han sålde oss? Sedan har han också gjort slut på det han fick i betalning för oss. 16 Ja, hela den rikedom som Gud har tagit från vår far tillhör oss och våra barn. Gör därför allt vad Gud har sagt till dig."
17 Jakob bröt så upp och satte sina barn och hustrur på kamelerna 18 och tog med sig all boskap och all egendom som han hade samlat, den boskap han ägde och hade skaffat sig i Paddan-Aram, och begav sig till sin fader Isak i Kanaans land. 19 Men Laban hade gått för att klippa sina får. Då stal Rakel sin fars husgudar. 20 Och Jakob smög sig i väg från arameen Laban utan att låta honom märka att han tänkte fly. 21 Han bröt upp och flydde med allt han hade och gick över floden[a] och ställde sin färd mot Gileads berg.
Laban förföljer Jakob
22 På tredje dagen fick Laban veta att Jakob hade flytt. 23 Då tog han med sig sina bröder och satte efter honom, och efter sju dagar hann han upp honom i Gileads bergsbygd. 24 Men Gud kom till arameen Laban i en dröm om natten och sade till honom: "Akta dig för att säga något mot Jakob, gott eller ont."
25 När Laban hann upp Jakob, hade denne slagit läger på berget. Också Laban och hans män slog läger på Gileads berg. 26 Då sade Laban till Jakob: "Vad har du gjort? Du smög dig i väg från mig och förde bort mina döttrar liksom fångar tagna med svärd. 27 Varför flydde du i hemlighet och rymde från mig? Eftersom du inte lät mig veta något, kunde jag inte sända i väg dig med jubel och sång, med pukor och harpor. 28 Du unnade mig inte ens att kyssa mina barnbarn och mina döttrar. Du har handlat som en dåre. 29 Det står i min makt att göra er illa, men er fars Gud sade till mig i natt: Akta dig för att säga något mot Jakob, gott eller ont. 30 Nu gav du dig i väg därför att du längtade hem så mycket, men varför stal du mina gudar?"
31 Jakob svarade Laban: "Jag var rädd för dig, för jag tänkte att du skulle ta dina döttrar från mig med våld. 32 Men den som du hittar dina gudar hos skall inte få behålla livet. I våra släktingars närvaro får du se efter om jag har något hos mig som är ditt. Tag det i så fall!" Jakob visste inte att Rakel hade stulit dem.
33 Laban gick då in i Jakobs tält och sedan in i Leas tält och in i de båda slavinnornas tält, men han fann inget. När han hade kommit ut ur Leas tält gick han in i Rakels tält. 34 Men Rakel hade tagit husgudarna och lagt dem i kamelsadeln och satt sig på dem. Laban sökte igenom hela tältet utan att finna dem. 35 Hon sade till sin far: "Bli inte arg på mig, herre, för att jag inte kan stiga upp för dig. Jag har det på kvinnors vis." Så sökte han efter husgudarna men kunde inte finna dem.
36 Jakob blev arg och kom i gräl med Laban och sade till honom: "Vad har jag gjort för illa eller syndat, eftersom du förföljer mig så våldsamt? 37 Nu har du letat igenom allt jag äger. Vad har du då funnit som tillhör dig? Lägg fram det inför både mina och dina släktingar här så att de får döma mellan oss båda. 38 I tjugo år har jag varit hos dig. Dina tackor och getter har inte fått missfall och av baggarna i din hjord har jag inte ätit. 39 Inget ihjälrivet djur förde jag till dig. Jag var tvungen att själv ersätta det. Du krävde ersättning av mig för det stulna, antingen det stulits på dagen eller på natten. 40 Så hade jag det. Om dagen plågades jag av hetta och om natten av köld, och sömnen vek ifrån mig. 41 I tjugo år har jag varit hos dig. Jag har tjänat dig i fjorton år för dina båda döttrar och i sex år för din boskap, men du har ändrat min lön tio gånger. 42 Om inte min fars Gud hade varit med mig - Abrahams Gud som också Isak fruktar - så hade du säkert låtit mig fara med tomma händer. Men Gud såg mitt lidande och min möda, och han fällde domen i natt."
Jakob och Laban försonas
43 Laban svarade Jakob: "Döttrarna är mina döttrar, barnen är mina barn och hjordarna är mina hjordar. Allt som du ser är mitt. Vad skulle jag väl kunna göra mot mina döttrar eller mot barnen som de har fött? 44 Kom nu och låt oss sluta förbund med varandra. Det skall vara vittne mellan mig och dig." 45 Då tog Jakob en sten och reste den till en stod. 46 Sedan sade han till sitt folk: "Samla ihop sten." Då tog de stenar och gjorde ett röse och höll en måltid där på röset. 47 Laban kallade det Jegar-Sahaduta, men Jakob kallade det Galed.[b]
48 Och Laban sade: "Detta röse skall i dag vara vittne mellan mig och dig." Det var så det fick namnet Galed. 49 Men det kallades också Mispa,[c] ty han sade: " Herren skall vara en väktare mellan mig och dig, när vi inte längre ser varandra. 50 Om du behandlar mina döttrar illa eller tar andra hustrur vid sidan av mina döttrar, skall du komma ihåg att Gud är vittne mellan mig och dig, även om ingen människa är närvarande."
51 Laban sade vidare till Jakob: "Se detta röse och se denna stod som jag rest mellan mig och dig. 52 Detta röse skall vara ett vittne, och stoden skall vara ett vittne, att jag inte skall fara till dig förbi detta röse och att inte heller du skall fara till mig förbi detta röse och förbi denna stod med onda avsikter. 53 Abrahams och Nahors Gud, han som var deras faders Gud, skall vara domare mellan oss." Och Jakob svor eden vid honom som hans fader Isak fruktade. 54 Sedan offrade Jakob slaktoffer på berget och bjöd in sina släktingar till en måltid. De åt och stannade på berget över natten. 55 På morgonen steg Laban upp tidigt, och när han hade kysst sina barnbarn och sina döttrar och välsignat dem, gav han sig i väg och återvände hem.

Jakob återvänder hem
31 Men Jakob fick reda på att Labans söner klagade: Han har tagit allt min far ägde, och sin rikedom har han fått på vår bekostnad.
2 Snart märkte Jakob att Laban blev kylig i sin attityd mot honom.
3 Herren talade nu till Jakob och sa till honom: Återvänd till dina förfäders land och till dina släktingar där, och jag ska vara med dig.
4 Därför skickade Jakob en dag efter Rakel och Lea och bad dem komma ut på fälten, där han var med hjordarna,
5 för att få tala med dem.Er far har vänt sig mot mig, sa han till dem, men mina förfäders Gud har varit med mig.
6 Ni vet hur hårt jag har arbetat för er far,
7 men han har varit fullständigt samvetslös och tio gånger har han ändrat min lön, men Gud har inte tillåtit honom att skada mig!
8 Om han sa att de spräckliga djuren skulle bli mina, så födde hela hjorden spräckliga djur, och när han ändrade sig och sa att jag kunde få de brokiga djuren, blev alla lammen brokiga!
9 På så sätt har Gud gjort mig rik på er fars bekostnad.
10 Vid tiden för djurens parning hade jag en dröm och såg att bockarna som parade sig med hjorden var strimmiga, spräckliga och brokiga.
11 I min dröm kallade sedan Guds ängel på mig
12 och sa till mig att jag skulle para de vita getterna med de brokiga, spräckliga och strimmiga getterna. 'Jag har nämligen sett allt som Laban har gjort mot dig
13 'Jag är den Gud du mötte i Betel
14 Rakel och Lea svarade: Det passar oss utmärkt! Det finns ingenting för oss här - vi kommer i vilket fall som helst inte att få något av vår fars rikedom!
15 Han har bara gett oss den rätt som tillhör de främmande kvinnorna. Han har sålt oss, och vad han fick för oss har han förbrukat.
16 De rikedomar som Gud har gett dig från vår far tillhörde egentligen oss och våra barn från början! Gör därför precis som Gud har sagt till dig.
17-20 En dag medan Laban var ute och klippte fåren, lyfte Jakob upp sina fruar och söner på kameler och flydde utan att berätta för Laban vad han tänkte göra. Han drev hjordarna framför sig - de hjordar som han fått i Paddan-Aram - och tog med sig allt han ägde och begav sig av hemåt till sin far Isak i Kanaans land.
21 På så sätt flydde han med alla sina ägodelar, och gick över floden Eufrat och begav sig till Gileads land. Rakel stal sin fars husgudar och tog dem med sig, och Jakob bedrog också Laban genom att ge sig iväg utan förvarning.
22 Laban fick inte reda på att de hade flytt förrän tre dagar senare.
23 Då tog han sina män med sig och tog upp jakten och hann ifatt dem vid Gileads berg efter sju dagar.
24 Den natten visade sig Gud för Laban i en dröm. Se upp med vad du säger till Jakob, sa Gud till honom. Du ska varken välsigna eller förbanna honom!
25 Laban kom ifatt Jakob där han hade slagit läger vid Gileads berg, och Laban och hans följe stannade också där.
26 Vad menar du med att ge dig iväg på detta sätt? sa Laban. Är mina döttrar fångar, tillfångatagna i strid, eftersom du har flytt med dem på detta sätt?
27 Varför lät du mig inte få ordna en avskedsfest med sång och spel?
28 Varför fick jag inte kyssa mina barnbarn och säga adjö till mina döttrar? Du har burit dig dumt åt!
29 Jag skulle kunna krossa dig, men din fars Gud visade sig för mig i går kväll och sa till mig: 'Se till att du inte är alltför hård mot Jakob.'
30 Men svara på en sak! Även om du känner att du måste ge dig av och har sådan längtan efter ditt barndomshem, varför har du stulit mina husgudar?
31 Jag gav mig iväg därför att jag var rädd för dig, svarade Jakob. Jag trodde att du skulle ta dina döttrar ifrån mig med våld.
32 Men när det gäller dina husgudar vilar en förbannelse över den som tog dem. Låt den personen dö! Om du finner en enda sak, som vi har stulit ifrån dig, så svär jag inför alla dessa män, att jag ska ge den tillbaka till dig utan frågor. Jakob visste nämligen inte att Rakel hade tagit husgudarna.
33 Laban gick först till Jakobs tält för att söka igenom det, sedan till Leas, och därefter sökte han i de två bihustrurnas tält. Slutligen gick han till Rakels tält.
34 Men Rakel hade gömt dem i kamelsadeln och satt nu på dem. Fastän Laban sökte mycket noggrant i tältet hittade han dem alltså inte.
35 Ursäkta att jag inte reser mig, far, sa Rakel, men jag har mens.
36-37 Nu blev Jakob rasande på Laban. Har du hittat något? frågade han. Vad består mitt brott i? Du har kommit efter mig som om du jagade en brottsling och har sökt igenom allting. Ta nu fram allt vad jag har stulit och lägg det framför oss, framför dina och mina män, så att alla kan se det och avgöra vems det är!
38 I tjugo år har jag varit tillsammans med dig, och hela tiden har jag tagit hand om dina får och dina getter, så att de har fött frisk avkomma, och jag har aldrig rört en enda av dina baggar för att få mat.
39 Om något djur anfölls och dödades av vilda djur, visade jag då det för dig och bad dig att minska antalet i din hjord? Nej, jag tog på mig förlusten. Du fick mig att betala för varje djur som stals från hjorden, vare sig jag kunde hjälpa det eller inte.
40 Jag har arbetat för dig under dagens brännande hetta och under kalla, sömnlösa nätter.
41 Ja, i tjugo år har jag arbetat - fjorton av dem för att förtjäna dina två döttrar och sex för att få hjorden. Och du har ändrat min lön tio gånger!
42 Om inte Gud med sin nåd hade varit med mig - min farfar Abrahams Gud, och min far Isaks Gud - skulle du ha sänt iväg mig tomhänt. Men Gud har sett din grymhet och mitt hårda arbete, och det är därför som han tillrättavisade dig i går kväll.
43 Laban svarade: Dessa kvinnor är mina döttrar, och dessa barn är mina och dessa hjordar och allt du äger. Allt är mitt. Hur skulle jag då kunna skada mina egna döttrar och barnbarn?
44 Låt oss i stället sluta förbund med varandra och leva i fred för all framtid.
45 Då tog Jakob en sten och reste den som ett minnesmärke,
46 och sa till sina män att samla stenar och göra ett stenröse, och Jakob och Laban åt tillsammans bredvid röset.
47-48 De kallade det för vittnesröset - Jegar-sahaduta på Labans språk och Galed på Jakobs språk.Detta stenröse ska hjälpa oss att minnas den här dagen, sa Laban.
49 Det kallades därför också för vakttornet (Mispa), för Laban sa: Må Herren se till att vi håller detta löfte, även när vi är utom synhåll för varandra.
50 Om du är hård mot mina döttrar, eller om du tar dig andra fruar, så kommer inte jag att känna till det, men Gud kommer att se det.
51-52 Detta röse, fortsatte Laban, står mellan oss som en bekräftelse på våra löften att jag inte ska gå förbi denna plats för att anfalla dig och att du inte heller ska passera den för att anfalla mig.
53 Jag kallar på Abrahams och Nahors Gud och din fars Gud och ber att han ska döma mellan oss.Då svor Jakob en ed inför sin far Isaks mäktige Gud att han skulle respektera denna gränslinje.
54 Sedan offrade Jakob ett offer till Gud på bergets topp och inbjöd sina följeslagare till en måltid och tillbringade sedan natten tillsammans med dem på berget.
55 Tidigt nästa morgon steg Laban upp och kysste sina döttrar och barnbarn och välsignade dem och återvände hem.

31 And he heard the words of Laban's sons, saying, Jacob hath taken away all that was our father's; and of that which was our father's hath he gotten all this glory.
2 And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and, behold, it was not toward him as before.
3 And the Lord said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee.
4 And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field unto his flock,
5 And said unto them, I see your father's countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me.
6 And ye know that with all my power I have served your father.
7 And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.
8 If he said thus, The speckled shall be thy wages; then all the cattle bare speckled: and if he said thus, The ringstraked shall be thy hire; then bare all the cattle ringstraked.
9 Thus God hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me.
10 And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled.
11 And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here am I.
12 And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle are ringstraked, speckled, and grisled: for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee.
13 I am the God of Bethel, where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst a vow unto me: now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred.
14 And Rachel and Leah answered and said unto him, Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father's house?
15 Are we not counted of him strangers? for he hath sold us, and hath quite devoured also our money.
16 For all the riches which God hath taken from our father, that is ours, and our children's: now then, whatsoever God hath said unto thee, do.
17 Then Jacob rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels;
18 And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten, the cattle of his getting, which he had gotten in Padanaram, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan.
19 And Laban went to shear his sheep: and Rachel had stolen the images that were her father's.
20 And Jacob stole away unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled.
21 So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up, and passed over the river, and set his face toward the mount Gilead.
22 And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob was fled.
23 And he took his brethren with him, and pursued after him seven days' journey; and they overtook him in the mount Gilead.
24 And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
25 Then Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mount: and Laban with his brethren pitched in the mount of Gilead.
26 And Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done, that thou hast stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword?
27 Wherefore didst thou flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp?
28 And hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? thou hast now done foolishly in so doing.
29 It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me yesternight, saying, Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
30 And now, though thou wouldest needs be gone, because thou sore longedst after thy father's house, yet wherefore hast thou stolen my gods?
31 And Jacob answered and said to Laban, Because I was afraid: for I said, Peradventure thou wouldest take by force thy daughters from me.
32 With whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren discern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee. For Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen them.
33 And Laban went into Jacob's tent, and into Leah's tent, and into the two maidservants' tents; but he found them not. Then went he out of Leah's tent, and entered into Rachel's tent.
34 Now Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the camel's furniture, and sat upon them. And Laban searched all the tent, but found them not.
35 And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched but found not the images.
36 And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban: and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my trespass? what is my sin, that thou hast so hotly pursued after me?
37 Whereas thou hast searched all my stuff, what hast thou found of all thy household stuff? set it here before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge betwixt us both.
38 This twenty years have I been with thee; thy ewes and thy she goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten.
39 That which was torn of beasts I brought not unto thee; I bare the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night.
40 Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from mine eyes.
41 Thus have I been twenty years in thy house; I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy cattle: and thou hast changed my wages ten times.
42 Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely thou hadst sent me away now empty. God hath seen mine affliction and the labour of my hands, and rebuked thee yesternight.
43 And Laban answered and said unto Jacob, These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that thou seest is mine: and what can I do this day unto these my daughters, or unto their children which they have born?
44 Now therefore come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou; and let it be for a witness between me and thee.
45 And Jacob took a stone, and set it up for a pillar.
46 And Jacob said unto his brethren, Gather stones; and they took stones, and made an heap: and they did eat there upon the heap.
47 And Laban called it Jegarsahadutha: but Jacob called it Galeed.
48 And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed;
49 And Mizpah; for he said, The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.
50 If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, God is witness betwixt me and thee.
51 And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold this pillar, which I have cast betwixt me and thee:
52 This heap be witness, and this pillar be witness, that I will not pass over this heap to thee, and that thou shalt not pass over this heap and this pillar unto me, for harm.
53 The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us. And Jacob sware by the fear of his father Isaac.
54 Then Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread: and they did eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount.
55 And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, and returned unto his place.

Jacob Flees with Family and Flocks
31 Now Jacob heard that the sons of Laban were saying, ‘Jacob has taken all that was our father’s; he has gained all this wealth from what belonged to our father.’ 2 And Jacob saw that Laban did not regard him as favourably as he did before. 3 Then the Lord said to Jacob, ‘Return to the land of your ancestors and to your kindred, and I will be with you.’ 4 So Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah into the field where his flock was, 5 and said to them, ‘I see that your father does not regard me as favourably as he did before. But the God of my father has been with me. 6 You know that I have served your father with all my strength; 7 yet your father has cheated me and changed my wages ten times, but God did not permit him to harm me. 8 If he said, “The speckled shall be your wages”, then all the flock bore speckled; and if he said, “The striped shall be your wages”, then all the flock bore striped. 9 Thus God has taken away the livestock of your father, and given them to me.
10 ‘During the mating of the flock I once had a dream in which I looked up and saw that the male goats that leaped upon the flock were striped, speckled, and mottled. 11 Then the angel of God said to me in the dream, “Jacob,” and I said, “Here I am!” 12 And he said, “Look up and see that all the goats that leap on the flock are striped, speckled, and mottled; for I have seen all that Laban is doing to you. 13 I am the God of Bethel,[a] where you anointed a pillar and made a vow to me. Now leave this land at once and return to the land of your birth.”’ 14 Then Rachel and Leah answered him, ‘Is there any portion or inheritance left to us in our father’s house? 15 Are we not regarded by him as foreigners? For he has sold us, and he has been using up the money given for us. 16 All the property that God has taken away from our father belongs to us and to our children; now then, do whatever God has said to you.’
17 So Jacob arose, and set his children and his wives on camels; 18 and he drove away all his livestock, all the property that he had gained, the livestock in his possession that he had acquired in Paddan-aram, to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan.
19 Now Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel stole her father’s household gods. 20 And Jacob deceived Laban the Aramean, in that he did not tell him that he intended to flee. 21 So he fled with all that he had; starting out he crossed the Euphrates,[b] and set his face towards the hill country of Gilead.
Laban Overtakes Jacob
22 On the third day Laban was told that Jacob had fled. 23 So he took his kinsfolk with him and pursued him for seven days until he caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead. 24 But God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream by night, and said to him, ‘Take heed that you say not a word to Jacob, either good or bad.’
25 Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country, and Laban with his kinsfolk camped in the hill country of Gilead. 26 Laban said to Jacob, ‘What have you done? You have deceived me, and carried away my daughters like captives of the sword. 27 Why did you flee secretly and deceive me and not tell me? I would have sent you away with mirth and songs, with tambourine and lyre. 28 And why did you not permit me to kiss my sons and my daughters farewell? What you have done is foolish. 29 It is in my power to do you harm; but the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, “Take heed that you speak to Jacob neither good nor bad.” 30 Even though you had to go because you longed greatly for your father’s house, why did you steal my gods?’ 31 Jacob answered Laban, ‘Because I was afraid, for I thought that you would take your daughters from me by force. 32 But anyone with whom you find your gods shall not live. In the presence of our kinsfolk, point out what I have that is yours, and take it.’ Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the gods.[c]
33 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent, and into Leah’s tent, and into the tent of the two maids, but he did not find them. And he went out of Leah’s tent, and entered Rachel’s. 34 Now Rachel had taken the household gods and put them in the camel’s saddle, and sat on them. Laban felt all about in the tent, but did not find them. 35 And she said to her father, ‘Let not my lord be angry that I cannot rise before you, for the way of women is upon me.’ So he searched, but did not find the household gods.
36 Then Jacob became angry, and upbraided Laban. Jacob said to Laban, ‘What is my offence? What is my sin, that you have hotly pursued me? 37 Although you have felt about through all my goods, what have you found of all your household goods? Set it here before my kinsfolk and your kinsfolk, so that they may decide between us two. 38 These twenty years I have been with you; your ewes and your female goats have not miscarried, and I have not eaten the rams of your flocks. 39 That which was torn by wild beasts I did not bring to you; I bore the loss of it myself; of my hand you required it, whether stolen by day or stolen by night. 40 It was like this with me: by day the heat consumed me, and the cold by night, and my sleep fled from my eyes. 41 These twenty years I have been in your house; I served you for fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, and you have changed my wages ten times. 42 If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear[d] of Isaac, had not been on my side, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed. God saw my affliction and the labour of my hands, and rebuked you last night.’
Laban and Jacob Make a Covenant
43 Then Laban answered and said to Jacob, ‘The daughters are my daughters, the children are my children, the flocks are my flocks, and all that you see is mine. But what can I do today about these daughters of mine, or about their children whom they have borne? 44 Come now, let us make a covenant, you and I; and let it be a witness between you and me.’ 45 So Jacob took a stone, and set it up as a pillar. 46 And Jacob said to his kinsfolk, ‘Gather stones,’ and they took stones, and made a heap; and they ate there by the heap. 47 Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha:[e] but Jacob called it Galeed.[f] 48 Laban said, ‘This heap is a witness between you and me today.’ Therefore he called it Galeed, 49 and the pillar[g] Mizpah,[h] for he said, ‘The Lord watch between you and me, when we are absent one from the other. 50 If you ill-treat my daughters, or if you take wives in addition to my daughters, though no one else is with us, remember that God is witness between you and me.’
51 Then Laban said to Jacob, ‘See this heap and see the pillar, which I have set between you and me. 52 This heap is a witness, and the pillar is a witness, that I will not pass beyond this heap to you, and you will not pass beyond this heap and this pillar to me, for harm. 53 May the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor’—the God of their father—‘judge between us.’ So Jacob swore by the Fear[i] of his father Isaac, 54 and Jacob offered a sacrifice on the height and called his kinsfolk to eat bread; and they ate bread and tarried all night in the hill country.
55 [j] Early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his grandchildren and his daughters and blessed them; then he departed and returned home.

Jacob Flees From Laban
31 Jacob heard that Laban’s sons(A) were saying, “Jacob has taken everything our father owned and has gained all this wealth from what belonged to our father.”(B) 2 And Jacob noticed that Laban’s attitude toward him was not what it had been.(C)
3 Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Go back(D) to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”(E)
4 So Jacob sent word to Rachel and Leah to come out to the fields where his flocks were. 5 He said to them, “I see that your father’s(F) attitude toward me is not what it was before,(G) but the God of my father has been with me.(H) 6 You know that I’ve worked for your father with all my strength,(I) 7 yet your father has cheated(J) me by changing my wages(K) ten times.(L) However, God has not allowed him to harm me.(M) 8 If he said, ‘The speckled ones will be your wages,’ then all the flocks gave birth to speckled young; and if he said, ‘The streaked ones will be your wages,’(N) then all the flocks bore streaked young. 9 So God has taken away your father’s livestock(O) and has given them to me.(P)
10 “In breeding season I once had a dream(Q) in which I looked up and saw that the male goats mating with the flock were streaked, speckled or spotted. 11 The angel of God(R) said to me in the dream,(S) ‘Jacob.’ I answered, ‘Here I am.’(T) 12 And he said, ‘Look up and see that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled or spotted,(U) for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you.(V) 13 I am the God of Bethel,(W) where you anointed a pillar(X) and where you made a vow(Y) to me. Now leave this land at once and go back to your native land.(Z)’”
14 Then Rachel and Leah replied, “Do we still have any share(AA) in the inheritance of our father’s estate? 15 Does he not regard us as foreigners?(AB) Not only has he sold us, but he has used up what was paid for us.(AC) 16 Surely all the wealth that God took away from our father belongs to us and our children.(AD) So do whatever God has told you.”
17 Then Jacob put his children and his wives(AE) on camels,(AF) 18 and he drove all his livestock ahead of him, along with all the goods he had accumulated(AG) in Paddan Aram,[a](AH) to go to his father Isaac(AI) in the land of Canaan.(AJ)
19 When Laban had gone to shear his sheep,(AK) Rachel stole her father’s household gods.(AL) 20 Moreover, Jacob deceived(AM) Laban the Aramean(AN) by not telling him he was running away.(AO) 21 So he fled(AP) with all he had, crossed the Euphrates River,(AQ) and headed for the hill country of Gilead.(AR)
Laban Pursues Jacob
22 On the third day(AS) Laban was told that Jacob had fled.(AT) 23 Taking his relatives(AU) with him(AV), he pursued Jacob for seven days and caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.(AW) 24 Then God came to Laban the Aramean(AX) in a dream at night and said to him,(AY) “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”(AZ)
25 Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead(BA) when Laban overtook him, and Laban and his relatives camped there too. 26 Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done?(BB) You’ve deceived me,(BC) and you’ve carried off my daughters like captives in war.(BD) 27 Why did you run off secretly and deceive me? Why didn’t you tell me,(BE) so I could send you away with joy and singing to the music of timbrels(BF) and harps?(BG) 28 You didn’t even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters goodbye.(BH) You have done a foolish thing. 29 I have the power to harm you;(BI) but last night the God of your father(BJ) said to me, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’(BK) 30 Now you have gone off because you longed to return to your father’s household.(BL) But why did you steal(BM) my gods?(BN)”
31 Jacob answered Laban, “I was afraid, because I thought you would take your daughters away from me by force.(BO) 32 But if you find anyone who has your gods, that person shall not live.(BP) In the presence of our relatives, see for yourself whether there is anything of yours here with me; and if so, take it.” Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the gods.(BQ)
33 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent and into Leah’s tent(BR) and into the tent of the two female servants,(BS) but he found nothing.(BT) After he came out of Leah’s tent, he entered Rachel’s tent. 34 Now Rachel had taken the household gods(BU) and put them inside her camel’s saddle(BV) and was sitting on them. Laban searched(BW) through everything in the tent but found nothing.
35 Rachel said to her father, “Don’t be angry, my lord, that I cannot stand up in your presence;(BX) I’m having my period.(BY)” So he searched but could not find the household gods.(BZ)
36 Jacob was angry and took Laban to task. “What is my crime?” he asked Laban. “How have I wronged(CA) you that you hunt me down?(CB) 37 Now that you have searched through all my goods, what have you found that belongs to your household?(CC) Put it here in front of your relatives(CD) and mine, and let them judge between the two of us.(CE)
38 “I have been with you for twenty years now.(CF) Your sheep and goats have not miscarried,(CG) nor have I eaten rams from your flocks. 39 I did not bring you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for whatever was stolen(CH) by day or night.(CI) 40 This was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes.(CJ) 41 It was like this for the twenty years(CK) I was in your household. I worked for you fourteen years for your two daughters(CL) and six years for your flocks,(CM) and you changed my wages(CN) ten times.(CO) 42 If the God of my father,(CP) the God of Abraham(CQ) and the Fear of Isaac,(CR) had not been with me,(CS) you would surely have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands,(CT) and last night he rebuked you.(CU)”
43 Laban answered Jacob, “The women are my daughters, the children are my children, and the flocks are my flocks.(CV) All you see is mine. Yet what can I do today about these daughters of mine, or about the children they have borne? 44 Come now, let’s make a covenant,(CW) you and I, and let it serve as a witness between us.”(CX)
45 So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar.(CY) 46 He said to his relatives, “Gather some stones.” So they took stones and piled them in a heap,(CZ) and they ate there by the heap. 47 Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed.[b](DA)
48 Laban said, “This heap(DB) is a witness between you and me today.”(DC) That is why it was called Galeed. 49 It was also called Mizpah,[c](DD) because he said, “May the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other. 50 If you mistreat(DE) my daughters or if you take any wives besides my daughters, even though no one is with us, remember that God is a witness(DF) between you and me.”(DG)
51 Laban also said to Jacob, “Here is this heap,(DH) and here is this pillar(DI) I have set up between you and me. 52 This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness,(DJ) that I will not go past this heap to your side to harm you and that you will not go past this heap(DK) and pillar to my side to harm me.(DL) 53 May the God of Abraham(DM) and the God of Nahor,(DN) the God of their father, judge between us.”(DO)
So Jacob took an oath(DP) in the name of the Fear of his father Isaac.(DQ) 54 He offered a sacrifice(DR) there in the hill country and invited his relatives to a meal.(DS) After they had eaten, they spent the night there.
55 Early the next morning Laban kissed his grandchildren and his daughters(DT) and blessed(DU) them. Then he left and returned home.[d](DV)
