23 Lamech zei tegen zijn vrouwen: "Ada en Zilla, luister naar me. Luister goed naar wat ik zeg. Als iemand mij slaat of verwondt, sla ik hem dood. 24 Als iemand Kaïn iets aandoet, zal hij daarvoor zevenvoudig worden gestraft. Maar als iemand míj iets aandoet, zal hij daarvoor zeven-en-zeventigvoudig gestraft worden!"
Een nieuwe zoon voor Adam en Eva
25 Adams vrouw Eva raakte opnieuw in verwachting en kreeg een zoon. Ze noemde hem Set (= 'in de plaats van'). "Want," zei ze, "mijn zoon Abel is gedood door Kaïn. Nu heeft God mij in zijn plaats een andere zoon gegeven."

23 And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.
24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.
25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.

a young man for injuring me.

25 Adam made love to his wife(E) again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth,[a](F) saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”(G)
