Abraham hos kong Abimelek
20 Abraham flyttede nu fra Mamres egelund til Negev, hvor han først slog sig ned mellem Kadesh og Shurs ørken, og senere boede han en tid som fremmed nær ved byen Gerar. 2 Han omtalte sin kone, Sara, som om hun var hans søster. Derfor sendte kong Abimelek af Gerar bud efter hende.
3 Men en nat sagde Gud til Abimelek i en drøm: „Du skal dø! For kvinden, du tog, er gift med en anden!” 4 Abimelek havde imidlertid ikke ligget med Sara. Derfor sagde han: „Herre, vil du slå uskyldige mennesker ihjel? 5 Manden sagde jo, at hun var hans søster—og i øvrigt bekræftede hun det selv. Det var bestemt ikke min hensigt at gøre noget forkert!”
6 „Det ved jeg,” svarede Herren. „Det var derfor, jeg hindrede dig i at synde imod mig, idet jeg ikke tillod dig at røre hende. 7 Send hende tilbage til hendes mand. Han er en profet, så han kan gå i forbøn for dig, så du ikke dør. Men hvis du ikke sender hende tilbage, skal du og hele din husstand dø!”
8 Tidligt næste morgen sammenkaldte Abimelek alle sine tjenere og fortalte dem, hvad der var sket, og de blev skrækslagne. 9 Derefter sendte Abimelek bud efter Abraham. „Hvad er det dog, du har gjort imod os?” sagde han. „Hvad har du imod mig, siden du synes, jeg og mit rige fortjener at blive skyldige i sådan en stor synd? Sådan noget burde ikke ske! 10 Hvorfor har du gjort det imod os?”
11 „Jeg regnede med, at det her var et gudløst sted, og at man derfor uden videre ville slå mig ihjel og tage min kone,” svarede Abraham. 12 „Desuden er hun faktisk min søster, for vi har samme far, men ikke samme mor. Men vi giftede os alligevel. 13 Da Gud i sin tid pålagde mig at rejse bort fra mit eget land, sagde jeg til hende: ‚Hvor som helst vi kommer frem, så vær sød at sige, at jeg er din bror.’ ”
14 Derefter gav Abimelek Abraham får, køer og slaver, både mænd og kvinder, og gav ham også hans kone tilbage. 15 Abimelek sagde desuden: „Se dig omkring i mit rige og vælg det sted, hvor du helst vil slå dig ned.” 16 Til Sara sagde han: „Jeg giver din bror 1000 sølvstykker i erstatning for det, som er overgået dig. Så regner jeg med, at vi er kvit.”
17 Abraham bad nu til Gud og gik i forbøn for kong Abimelek, og Gud helbredte både ham, hans kone og de øvrige kvinder i hans harem, så de igen kunne få børn. 18 Herren havde nemlig gjort alle kvinderne i Abimeleks husstand ufrugtbare på grund af det med Sara.

Abraham och kung Avimelek
20 Abraham flyttade söderut till Negev och bosatte sig mellan Kadesh och Shur. Under en tid var han i Gerar, 2 och där sa han om sin hustru Sara att hon var hans syster. Då lät Gerars kung Avimelek hämta henne till sig.
3 Men om natten kom Gud till Avimelek i en dröm och sa: ”Du ska dö, eftersom den kvinna du har tagit till dig är gift.” 4 Men Avimelek hade inte legat med henne, så han sa: ”Herre, vill du döda en oskyldig nation? 5 Han påstod ju att hon var hans syster. Och hon själv sa: ’Ja, han är min bror.’ Jag har inte haft den minsta tanke på att göra något ont eller något felaktigt.”
6 ”Ja, jag vet det”, svarade Gud i en dröm. ”Du har handlat med uppriktigt hjärta. Det är därför som jag har hindrat dig från att synda emot mig, och därför lät jag dig inte röra henne. 7 Återlämna henne nu till hennes man. Han ska be för dig så att du får leva, för han är en profet. Men om du inte återlämnar henne till honom, ska både du och hela din familj straffas med döden.”
8 Nästa morgon steg kungen upp tidigt och kallade snabbt samman sina män. Han talade om för dem vad som hade hänt och de blev allesammans mycket rädda.
9 Sedan kallade kungen på Abraham. ”Vad är det du har gjort mot oss?” frågade han. ”Och vad har jag gjort, för att du ska behandla mig på det här sättet och göra mig och mitt kungarike skyldiga till denna stora synd? Du har gjort något som inte får göras mot mig.” 10 Avimelek frågade Abraham: ”Vad har fått dig att handla så?”
11 Abraham svarade: ”Jag räknade med att man inte fruktade Gud på denna plats. Jag tänkte att ni kunde döda mig för att få min hustru. 12 Dessutom är hon faktiskt min syster, för vi har samma far, men inte samma mor. Därför kunde jag gifta mig med henne. 13 När Gud skickade iväg mig på den långa resan från mitt barndomshem, sa jag till henne: ’Visa mig din kärlek genom att säga att jag är din bror, vart vi än kommer.’ ”
14 Då tog kung Avimelek får och oxar och slavar, både män och kvinnor, och gav till Abraham samtidigt som han återlämnade hans hustru Sara.
15 ”Se dig omkring i mitt rike och välj själv var du vill bo”, sa Avimelek till honom. 16 Sedan vände han sig till Sara: ”Se här, jag ger din bror 1 000 siklar[a] silver som ersättning åt dig inför de dina. På så sätt blir du upprättad inför alla.”
17 Då bad Abraham till Gud att han skulle bota kungen och hans hustru och slavinnor så att de skulle kunna få barn. 18 Herren hade nämligen slagit alla kvinnorna med ofruktsamhet för Saras, Abrahams hustrus, skull.

Abraham and Abimelek(A)
20 Now Abraham moved on from there(B) into the region of the Negev(C) and lived between Kadesh(D) and Shur.(E) For a while(F) he stayed in Gerar,(G) 2 and there Abraham said of his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.(H)” Then Abimelek(I) king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her.(J)
3 But God came to Abimelek(K) in a dream(L) one night and said to him, “You are as good as dead(M) because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman.”(N)
4 Now Abimelek had not gone near her, so he said, “Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation?(O) 5 Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister,(P)’ and didn’t she also say, ‘He is my brother’? I have done this with a clear conscience(Q) and clean hands.(R)”
6 Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept(S) you from sinning against me.(T) That is why I did not let you touch her. 7 Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet,(U) and he will pray for you(V) and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all who belong to you will die.”(W)
8 Early the next morning Abimelek summoned all his officials, and when he told them all that had happened, they were very much afraid. 9 Then Abimelek called Abraham in and said, “What have you done to us? How have I wronged you that you have brought such great guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should never be done.(X)” 10 And Abimelek asked Abraham, “What was your reason for doing this?”
11 Abraham replied, “I said to myself, ‘There is surely no fear of God(Y) in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.’(Z) 12 Besides, she really is my sister,(AA) the daughter of my father though not of my mother; and she became my wife. 13 And when God had me wander(AB) from my father’s household,(AC) I said to her, ‘This is how you can show your love to me: Everywhere we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’”
14 Then Abimelek(AD) brought sheep and cattle and male and female slaves and gave them to Abraham,(AE) and he returned Sarah his wife to him. 15 And Abimelek said, “My land is before you; live wherever you like.”(AF)
16 To Sarah he said, “I am giving your brother a thousand shekels[a] of silver. This is to cover the offense against you before all who are with you; you are completely vindicated.”
17 Then Abraham prayed to God,(AG) and God healed Abimelek, his wife and his female slaves so they could have children again, 18 for the Lord had kept all the women in Abimelek’s household from conceiving because of Abraham’s wife Sarah.(AH)

20 Then Abraham journeyed from there to the land of the Negev and settled between Kadesh and Shur. While he was dwelling as an outsider in Gerar, 2 Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” So King Abimelech of Gerar sent for and took Sarah. 3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream at night and said to him, “Behold, you are as good as dead, because of the woman whom you have taken—since she is a married woman.”
4 Now Abimelech had not come near her. So he said, “My Lord, will You slay a nation, even though innocent? 5 Didn’t he say to me, ‘She’s my sister’? And she herself even said, ‘He’s my brother.’ I did this with integrity of my heart and guiltlessness of my hands.”
6 Then God said to him in a dream, “Yes, I myself knew that you did this with integrity of your heart, so I, yes I Myself prevented you from sinning against Me. That is why I did not allow you to touch her. 7 So now, return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet. And let him pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, know that you will surely die—you and all who are yours.”
8 Abimelech rose early in the morning, called all his servants and spoke all these words in their ears—and the men were very frightened. 9 Then Abimelech called to Abraham and said to him, “What have you done to us, and how have I sinned against you, that you brought great sin upon me and my kingdom? You’ve done to me things that should not be done!” 10 Abimelech also said to Abraham, “What motivated you to do this thing?”
11 Abraham said, “Because I thought, ‘There is certainly no fear of God in this place, so they’ll kill me, because of my wife.’ 12 And besides, she really is my sister. She’s my father’s daughter, though not my mother’s daughter. Then she became my wife. 13 So when God made me wander away from my father’s house, I said to her, ‘This is your loyalty that you must show me: in every place we go, say of me, ‘He is my brother.’”
14 Then Abimelech took sheep, cattle, male slaves and female slaves and gave them to Abraham, and returned his wife Sarah to him. 15 Then Abimelech said, “Look, my land is before you. Dwell wherever it pleases you.” 16 At the same time he said to Sarah, “Look, I’ve given a thousand shekels to your brother. Look, it is compensation for everything that happened—so to everyone with you, you are vindicated.”
17 Then Abraham prayed to God and God healed Abimelech, his wife and his female slaves so that they could bear children. 18 For Adonai had completely locked up every womb in Abimelech’s household because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.
