Jakob und seine Familie ziehen nach Ägypten

46 Und Israel brach auf mit allem, was er hatte; und als er nach Beerscheba kam, opferte er dort dem Gott seines Vaters Isaak.

Und Gott sprach zu Israel im Nachtgesicht: Jakob, Jakob!

Er sprach: Hier bin ich!

Da sprach Gott: Ich bin der starke Gott, der Gott deines Vaters; fürchte dich nicht, nach Ägypten hinabzuziehen; denn dort will ich dich zu einem großen Volk machen! Ich will mit dir hinab nach Ägypten ziehen, und ich führe dich gewiß auch wieder hinauf; und Joseph soll dir die Augen zudrücken!

Da machte sich Jakob von Beerscheba auf, und die Kinder Israels führten ihren Vater Jakob samt ihren Kindern und Frauen auf den Wagen, welche der Pharao gesandt hatte, um ihn hinzuführen. Sie nahmen auch ihr Vieh und ihre Habe, die sie im Lande Kanaan erworben hatten, und kamen nach Ägypten, Jakob und alle seine Nachkommen mit ihm: seine Söhne und Enkel, seine Töchter und Enkelinnen, kurz alle seine Nachkommen brachte er mit sich nach Ägypten.

Die Namen der Söhne Jakobs

Dieses aber sind die Namen der Kinder Israels, die nach Ägypten kamen: Jakob und seine Söhne.

Der erstgeborne Sohn Jakobs: Ruben.

Die Kinder Rubens: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron und Karmi.

10 Die Kinder Simeons: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar und Saul, der Sohn von der kanaanäischen Frau.

11 Die Kinder Levis: Gerson, Kahath und Merari.

12 Die Kinder Judas: Er, Onan, Perez und Serah. Aber Er und Onan starben im Lande Kanaan. Die Kinder des Perez aber waren Hezron und Hamul.

13 Die Kinder Issaschars: Thola, Puva, Job und Simron.

14 Die Kinder Sebulons: Sered, Elon und Jahleel.

15 Das sind die Kinder von Lea, die sie dem Jakob in Mesopotamien gebar, samt seiner Tochter Dina. Diese machen zusammen, mit Söhnen und Töchtern, dreiunddreißig Seelen aus.

16 Die Kinder Gads: Ziphion, Haggi, Suni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi und Areli.

17 Die Kinder Assers: Jimna, Jiswa, Jiswi, Beria und Serah, ihre Schwester. Und die Kinder Berias: Heber und Malkiel.

18 Das sind die Kinder von Silpa, welche Laban seiner Tochter Lea gab; sie gebar dem Jakob diese sechzehn Seelen.

19 Die Kinder Rahels, der Frau Jakobs: Joseph und Benjamin.

20 Und dem Joseph wurden in Ägypten Manasse und Ephraim geboren, die ihm Asnath, die Tochter Potipheras, des Priesters zu On, gebar.

21 Die Kinder Benjamins: Bela, Becher, Asbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosch, Mupim, Hupim und Ard.

22 Das sind die Kinder von Rahel, die dem Jakob geboren wurden, alle zusammen vierzehn Seelen.

23 Die Kinder Dans: Husim.

24 Die Kinder Naphtalis: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer und Sillem.

25 Das sind die Kinder von Bilha, die Laban seiner Tochter Rahel gab; sie gebar dem Jakob in allem sieben Seelen.

26 Alle Seelen, die mit Jakob nach Ägypten kamen, welche von seinen Lenden ausgegangen waren, ausgenommen die Frauen der Söhne Jakobs, sind zusammen sechsundsechzig Seelen. 27 Und die Kinder Josephs, die ihm in Ägypten geboren sind, waren zwei Seelen, also daß alle Seelen des Hauses Jakobs, die nach Ägypten kamen, siebzig waren.

28 Er hatte aber den Juda vor sich her zu Joseph gesandt, daß er ihn zur Begegnung nach Gosen weise. 29 Als sie nun ins Land Gosen kamen, spannte Joseph seinen Wagen an und fuhr seinem Vater nach Gosen entgegen. Und als er ihn sah, fiel er ihm um den Hals und weinte lange an seinem Hals.

30 Und Israel sprach zu Joseph: Nun will ich gerne sterben, nachdem ich dein Angesicht geschaut (habe und sehe), daß du noch lebst!

31 Joseph aber sprach zu seinen Brüdern und zu seines Vaters Haus: Ich will hinaufgehen und es dem Pharao anzeigen und ihm sagen: Meine Brüder und meines Vaters Haus, die in Kanaan waren, sind zu mir gekommen; 32 und die Männer sind Schafhirten, sie sind Viehzüchter und haben ihre Schafe und Rinder und alles, was ihnen gehört, mitgebracht. 33 Wenn euch dann der Pharao rufen läßt und euch fragt: Was treibt ihr? 34 So sollt ihr sagen: Deine Knechte sind Viehzüchter gewesen von ihrer Jugend auf bisher, wir und unsere Väter! Dann werdet ihr im Lande Gosen wohnen dürfen, weil alle Hirten den Ägyptern ein Greuel sind.

Jacob Leaves for Egypt

46 Israel set out with all that he had and came to Beer-sheba,(A) and he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. That night God spoke to Israel in a vision:(B) “Jacob, Jacob!” He said.

And Jacob replied, “Here I am.”

God said, “I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there.(C) I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you back.(D) Joseph will put his hands on your eyes.”[a](E)

Jacob left Beer-sheba. The sons of Israel took their father Jacob in the wagons Pharaoh had sent to carry him,(F) along with their children and their wives. They also took their cattle and possessions they had acquired in the land of Canaan. Then Jacob and all his children went with him to Egypt.(G) His sons and grandsons, his daughters and granddaughters, indeed all his offspring, he brought with him to Egypt.

Jacob’s Family

These are the names of the Israelites, Jacob and his sons, who went to Egypt:(H)

Jacob’s firstborn: Reuben.
Reuben’s sons:(I) Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.
10 Simeon’s sons:(J) Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman.
11 Levi’s sons:(K) Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
12 Judah’s sons: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah; but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.
Perez’s sons:(L) Hezron and Hamul.
13 Issachar’s sons:(M) Tola, Puvah,[b] Jashub,[c] and Shimron.
14 Zebulun’s sons: Sered, Elon, and Jahleel.
15 These were Leah’s sons born to Jacob in Paddan-aram, as well as his daughter Dinah. The total number of persons:[d] 33.
16 Gad’s sons: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli.
17 Asher’s sons:(N) Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, Beriah, and their sister Serah.
Beriah’s sons were Heber and Malchiel.
18 These were the sons of Zilpah—whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah—that she bore to Jacob: 16 persons.
19 The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.
20 Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph in the land of Egypt. They were born to him by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, a priest at On.[e]
21 Benjamin’s sons:(O) Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard.
22 These were Rachel’s sons who were born to Jacob: 14 persons.
23 Dan’s son:[f] Hushim.
24 Naphtali’s sons:(P) Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem.
25 These were the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel.(Q) She bore to Jacob: seven persons.
26 The total number of persons belonging to Jacob—his direct descendants,[g] not including the wives of Jacob’s sons—who came to Egypt: 66.
27 And Joseph’s sons who were born to him in Egypt: two persons.
All those of Jacob’s household who had come to Egypt: 70[h] persons.(R)

Jacob Arrives in Egypt

28 Now Jacob had sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph to prepare for his arrival[i] at Goshen.(S) When they came to the land of Goshen, 29 Joseph hitched the horses to his chariot and went up to Goshen to meet his father Israel. Joseph presented himself to him, threw his arms around him, and wept for a long time.(T)

30 Then Israel said to Joseph, “At last I can die, now that I have seen your face and know you are still alive!”

31 Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and inform Pharaoh, telling him: My brothers and my father’s household, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me.(U) 32 The men are shepherds; they also raise livestock. They have brought their sheep and cattle and all that they have. 33 When Pharaoh addresses you and asks, ‘What is your occupation?’ 34 you are to say, ‘Your servants, both we and our fathers, have raised livestock[j] from our youth until now.’ Then you will be allowed to settle in the land of Goshen, since all shepherds are abhorrent to Egyptians.”(V)

Jacob Goes to Egypt

46 So Israel(A) set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba,(B) he offered sacrifices(C) to the God of his father Isaac.(D)

And God spoke to Israel(E) in a vision at night(F) and said, “Jacob! Jacob!”

“Here I am,”(G) he replied.

“I am God, the God of your father,”(H) he said. “Do not be afraid(I) to go down to Egypt,(J) for I will make you into a great nation(K) there.(L) I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again.(M) And Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes.(N)

Then Jacob left Beersheba,(O) and Israel’s(P) sons took their father Jacob and their children and their wives in the carts(Q) that Pharaoh had sent to transport him. So Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt,(R) taking with them their livestock and the possessions(S) they had acquired(T) in Canaan. Jacob brought with him to Egypt(U) his sons and grandsons and his daughters and granddaughters—all his offspring.(V)

These are the names of the sons of Israel(W) (Jacob and his descendants) who went to Egypt:

Reuben the firstborn(X) of Jacob.

The sons of Reuben:(Y)

Hanok, Pallu,(Z) Hezron and Karmi.(AA)

10 The sons of Simeon:(AB)

Jemuel,(AC) Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar(AD) and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman.

11 The sons of Levi:(AE)

Gershon,(AF) Kohath(AG) and Merari.(AH)

12 The sons of Judah:(AI)

Er,(AJ) Onan,(AK) Shelah, Perez(AL) and Zerah(AM) (but Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan).(AN)

The sons of Perez:(AO)

Hezron and Hamul.(AP)

13 The sons of Issachar:(AQ)

Tola, Puah,[a](AR) Jashub[b](AS) and Shimron.

14 The sons of Zebulun:(AT)

Sered, Elon and Jahleel.

15 These were the sons Leah bore to Jacob in Paddan Aram,[c](AU) besides his daughter Dinah.(AV) These sons and daughters of his were thirty-three in all.

16 The sons of Gad:(AW)

Zephon,[d](AX) Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi and Areli.

17 The sons of Asher:(AY)

Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi and Beriah.

Their sister was Serah.

The sons of Beriah:

Heber and Malkiel.

18 These were the children born to Jacob by Zilpah,(AZ) whom Laban had given to his daughter Leah(BA)—sixteen in all.

19 The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel:(BB)

Joseph and Benjamin.(BC) 20 In Egypt, Manasseh(BD) and Ephraim(BE) were born to Joseph(BF) by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.[e](BG)

21 The sons of Benjamin:(BH)

Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.(BI)

22 These were the sons of Rachel(BJ) who were born to Jacob—fourteen in all.

23 The son of Dan:(BK)

Hushim.(BL)

24 The sons of Naphtali:(BM)

Jahziel, Guni, Jezer and Shillem.

25 These were the sons born to Jacob by Bilhah,(BN) whom Laban had given to his daughter Rachel(BO)—seven in all.

26 All those who went to Egypt with Jacob—those who were his direct descendants, not counting his sons’ wives—numbered sixty-six persons.(BP) 27 With the two sons[f] who had been born to Joseph in Egypt,(BQ) the members of Jacob’s family, which went to Egypt, were seventy[g] in all.(BR)

28 Now Jacob sent Judah(BS) ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to Goshen.(BT) When they arrived in the region of Goshen, 29 Joseph had his chariot(BU) made ready and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel.(BV) As soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his father[h] and wept(BW) for a long time.(BX)

30 Israel(BY) said to Joseph, “Now I am ready to die, since I have seen for myself that you are still alive.”(BZ)

31 Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were living in the land of Canaan,(CA) have come to me.(CB) 32 The men are shepherds;(CC) they tend livestock,(CD) and they have brought along their flocks and herds and everything they own.’(CE) 33 When Pharaoh calls you in and asks, ‘What is your occupation?’(CF) 34 you should answer, ‘Your servants(CG) have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.’(CH) Then you will be allowed to settle(CI) in the region of Goshen,(CJ) for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.(CK)
