Jakob in Bethel

35 Gott sprach zu Jakob: »Mach dich auf und zieh wieder nach Bethel! Bleib dort und bau mir einen Altar. Denn an diesem Ort bin ich dir erschienen, als du auf der Flucht vor deinem Bruder Esau warst.« 2 Jakob befahl seiner Familie und denen, die zu ihm gehörten: »Werft alle Götterfiguren weg, die ihr noch bei euch habt! Wascht euch und zieht saubere Kleidung an, um rein vor Gott zu treten! 3 Wir gehen jetzt nach Bethel. Dort will ich für Gott einen Altar bauen, denn er ist es, der in der Not meine Gebete erhört hat. Während meiner ganzen Reise bis hierher ist er immer bei mir gewesen!« 4 Sie gaben Jakob alle Götterfiguren sowie die Amulette, die sie an den Ohren trugen, und er vergrub sie unter der Eiche bei Sichem. 5 Dann machte sich die ganze Familie auf den Weg. Gott versetzte die Einwohner der Städte ringsum in so große Angst, dass sie es nicht wagten, Jakob und seine Söhne zu verfolgen.

6 So erreichten sie Lus im Land Kanaan, das heute Bethel heißt. 7 Dort baute Jakob einen Altar und nannte die Opferstätte »Gott von Bethel«. Denn an dieser Stelle war Gott ihm einst erschienen, als er vor seinem Bruder Esau fliehen musste.

8 Noch während sie in dieser Gegend lagerten, starb Debora, die früher Rebekkas Kindermädchen gewesen war. Sie wurde unter der Eiche im Tal von Bethel begraben, die seitdem »Träneneiche« heißt.

9 Gott erschien Jakob erneut und segnete ihn. Es war das zweite Mal seit seiner Rückkehr aus Mesopotamien. 10 »Von jetzt an sollst du nicht mehr Jakob heißen, sondern Israel. Das ist dein neuer Name!«, sagte er. 11 »Ich bin der allmächtige Gott. Ich werde dir so viele Nachkommen schenken, dass nicht nur ein Volk, sondern eine ganze Schar von Völkern daraus entsteht – sogar Könige sollen von dir abstammen! 12 Dir und deinen Nachkommen gebe ich das Land, das ich Abraham und Isaak versprochen habe.«

13 Nachdem Gott dies gesagt hatte, erhob er sich wieder zum Himmel, 14 und Jakob errichtete an der Stelle einen Gedenkstein. Er schüttete Wein als ein Trankopfer darüber und begoss ihn mit Öl, um ihn Gott zu weihen. 15 Weil Gott an diesem Ort zu ihm gesprochen hatte, nannte er ihn Bethel (»Haus Gottes«).

Rahels Tod

16 Danach verließen sie Bethel und zogen weiter. Als sie nur noch ein kurzes Stück von Efrata entfernt waren, setzten bei Rahel starke Geburtswehen ein. 17 Sie krümmte sich vor Schmerzen, doch die Hebamme rief ihr zu: »Nur Mut, du hast wieder einen Sohn!« 18 Aber Rahel spürte, dass sie sterben musste. Darum nannte sie den Jungen Benoni (»Schmerzenskind«), Jakob jedoch gab ihm den Namen Benjamin (»Glückskind«). 19 Rahel starb, und Jakob begrub sie an der Straße nach Efrata, das jetzt Bethlehem heißt. 20 Dort errichtete er einen Gedenkstein, der bis heute die Stelle markiert, wo Rahel begraben liegt.

21 Dann zog Jakob mit seiner Familie weiter und schlug seine Zelte hinter Migdal-Eder auf. 22 Damals schlief Ruben mit Bilha, der Nebenfrau seines Vaters, und Jakob erfuhr davon.

Jakobs Söhne

Inzwischen hatte Jakob zwölf Söhne: 23 Von Lea stammten der erstgeborene Sohn Ruben sowie Simeon, Levi, Juda, Issachar und Sebulon; 24 Rahel brachte Josef und Benjamin zur Welt; 25 Rahels Magd Bilha bekam Dan und Naftali, 26 und von Leas Magd Silpa stammten Gad und Asser. Alle wurden in Mesopotamien geboren.

Isaaks Tod

27 Jakob zog weiter zu seinem Vater Isaak nach Mamre bei Kirjat-Arba, das heute Hebron heißt. Dort hatte schon Abraham gewohnt. 28-29 Isaak starb im Alter von 180 Jahren nach einem langen und erfüllten Leben und wurde im Tod mit seinen Vorfahren vereint. Seine Söhne Esau und Jakob begruben ihn.

Jacob’s Return to Bethel

35 Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to (A)Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God, (B)who appeared to you (C)when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”

2 And Jacob said to his (D)household and to all who were with him, “Put away (E)the foreign gods that are among you, (F)purify yourselves, and change your garments. 3 Then let us arise and go up to Bethel; and I will make an altar there to God, (G)who answered me in the day of my distress (H)and has been with me in the way which I have gone.” 4 So they gave Jacob all the foreign [a]gods which were in their hands, and the (I)earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under (J)the terebinth tree which was by Shechem.

5 And they journeyed, and (K)the terror of God was upon the cities that were all around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. 6 So Jacob came to (L)Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him. 7 And he (M)built an altar there and called the place [b]El Bethel, because (N)there God appeared to him when he fled from the face of his brother.

8 Now (O)Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the terebinth tree. So the name of it was called [c]Allon Bachuth.

9 Then (P)God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Padan Aram, and (Q)blessed him. 10 And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; (R)your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, (S)but Israel shall be your name.” So He called his name Israel. 11 Also God said to him: (T)“I am God Almighty. (U)Be fruitful and multiply; (V)a nation and a company of nations shall proceed from you, and kings shall come from your body. 12 The (W)land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I give to you; and to your descendants after you I give this land.” 13 Then God (X)went[d] up from him in the place where He talked with him. 14 So Jacob (Y)set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it. 15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, (Z)Bethel.

Death of Rachel

16 Then they journeyed from Bethel. And when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel labored in childbirth, and she had hard labor. 17 Now it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, “Do not fear; (AA)you will have this son also.” 18 And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name [e]Ben-Oni; but his father called him [f]Benjamin. 19 So (AB)Rachel died and was buried on the way to (AC)Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). 20 And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which is the pillar of Rachel’s grave (AD)to this day.

21 Then Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyond (AE)the tower of Eder. 22 And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and (AF)lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine; and Israel heard about it.

Jacob’s Twelve Sons

Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: 23 the sons of Leah were (AG)Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, and Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun; 24 the sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin; 25 the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant, were Dan and Naphtali; 26 and the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maidservant, were Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Padan Aram.

Death of Isaac

27 Then Jacob came to his father Isaac at (AH)Mamre, or (AI)Kirjath Arba[g] (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had dwelt. 28 Now the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years. 29 So Isaac breathed his last and died, and (AJ)was [h]gathered to his people, being old and full of days. And (AK)his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

Jacob Returns to Bethel

35 Then God said to Jacob, “Go up to Bethel(A) and settle there, and build an altar(B) there to God,(C) who appeared to you(D) when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.”(E)

2 So Jacob said to his household(F) and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods(G) you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes.(H) 3 Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God,(I) who answered me in the day of my distress(J) and who has been with me wherever I have gone.(K)” 4 So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears,(L) and Jacob buried them under the oak(M) at Shechem.(N) 5 Then they set out, and the terror of God(O) fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.(P)

6 Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz(Q) (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.(R) 7 There he built an altar,(S) and he called the place El Bethel,[a](T) because it was there that God revealed himself to him(U) when he was fleeing from his brother.(V)

8 Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse,(W) died and was buried under the oak(X) outside Bethel.(Y) So it was named Allon Bakuth.[b]

9 After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram,[c](Z) God appeared to him again and blessed him.(AA) 10 God said to him, “Your name is Jacob,[d] but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel.[e]”(AB) So he named him Israel.

11 And God said to him, “I am God Almighty[f];(AC) be fruitful and increase in number.(AD) A nation(AE) and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants.(AF) 12 The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you.(AG)”(AH) 13 Then God went up from him(AI) at the place where he had talked with him.

14 Jacob set up a stone pillar(AJ) at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a drink offering(AK) on it; he also poured oil on it.(AL) 15 Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel.[g](AM)

The Deaths of Rachel and Isaac(AN)

16 Then they moved on from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath,(AO) Rachel(AP) began to give birth and had great difficulty. 17 And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth, the midwife(AQ) said to her, “Don’t despair, for you have another son.”(AR) 18 As she breathed her last—for she was dying—she named her son Ben-Oni.[h](AS) But his father named him Benjamin.[i](AT)

19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath(AU) (that is, Bethlehem(AV)). 20 Over her tomb Jacob set up a pillar, and to this day(AW) that pillar marks Rachel’s tomb.(AX)

21 Israel moved on again and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder.(AY) 22 While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with his father’s concubine(AZ) Bilhah,(BA) and Israel heard of it.

Jacob had twelve sons:

23 The sons of Leah:(BB)

Reuben the firstborn(BC) of Jacob,

Simeon, Levi, Judah,(BD) Issachar and Zebulun.(BE)

24 The sons of Rachel:

Joseph(BF) and Benjamin.(BG)

25 The sons of Rachel’s servant Bilhah:(BH)

Dan and Naphtali.(BI)

26 The sons of Leah’s servant Zilpah:(BJ)

Gad(BK) and Asher.(BL)

These were the sons of Jacob,(BM) who were born to him in Paddan Aram.(BN)

27 Jacob came home to his father Isaac(BO) in Mamre,(BP) near Kiriath Arba(BQ) (that is, Hebron),(BR) where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.(BS) 28 Isaac lived a hundred and eighty years.(BT) 29 Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people,(BU) old and full of years.(BV) And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.(BW)

So he called its name Allon-bacuth.[b]

9 God appeared[c] to Jacob again, when he came from Paddan-aram, and blessed him. 10 And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; (L)no longer shall your name be called Jacob, but (M)Israel shall be your name.” So he called his name Israel. 11 And God said to him, (N)“I am God Almighty:[d] be (O)fruitful and multiply.
