Jákób kibékül Ézsauval
33 Ezután Jákób észrevette, hogy Ézsau közeledik 400 emberével. Ekkor gyorsan elrendezte a családját: a két szolgáló mellé állította a saját fiaikat, azután Lea következett a fiaival, de Ráhelt és Józsefet leghátulra állította. 3 Jákób maga az élükön haladt, és mikor Ézsau már közel volt, hétszer a földig hajolt a bátyja előtt, miközben egyre közelebb ment hozzá.
4 Ézsau azonban odaszaladt Jákóbhoz, a nyakába borult, megcsókolta az arcát, és együtt sírtak. 5 Majd látva az asszonyokat és gyerekeket, megkérdezte: „Kik ezek itt veled?”
„Ők a gyermekeim, akikkel Isten kegyelmesen megajándékozta szolgádat” — felelte Jákób.
6-7 Akkor sorra mind közelebb léptek, és meghajoltak Ézsau előtt: előbb a szolgálók és fiaik, azután Lea és a fiai, végül József és Ráhel.
8 Majd ezt kérdezte Ézsau: „Miért küldted elém azokat a nyájakat?”
„Ajándékba küldtem, hogy elnyerjem jóindulatodat” — válaszolta Jákób.
9 „Ugyan, öcsém, nekem is vannak nyájaim bőven!” — mondta Ézsau.
10 „Kérlek, ha valóban jóindulattal vagy irántam, fogadd el tőlem ezt az ajándékot! — unszolta Jákób. — Hiszen olyan kedvesen fogadtál, hogy úgy nézek rád, mintha Isten arcát látnám! 11 Fogadd csak el! Ezzel akarlak megáldani és megajándékozni, mert Isten is megáldott és megajándékozott engem bőségesen — mindenem megvan, ami szükséges.” Így unszolta, amíg Ézsau végre elfogadta.
12 Akkor Ézsau azt ajánlotta: „Induljunk, és menjünk együtt!”
13 De Jákób nem egyezett bele: „Uram, látod, hogy a gyermekek még kicsinyek, és a nyájakban is sok szoptatós juh és tehén van még a kicsinyeikkel — nekem azokra is gondot kell viselnem. Ha csak egy napig is hajszolnánk őket, mind elhullanának! 14 Menj csak előttünk, uram! Szolgád majd halad utánad a jószág kicsinyeinek lépése szerint, amíg eljutunk hozzád Széírbe.”
15 „Akkor legalább hadd hagyjam veled kíséretül néhány emberemet!” — kérte Ézsau.
De Jákób ezt is elhárította: „Ez igazán nagyon kedves tőled, uram, de nem szükséges.”
16 Akkor Ézsau elvált tőle, és visszatért Széírbe.
17 Jákób azonban nem Széír felé ment, hanem Szukkót irányába. Ott azután megállapodott egy időre: házat épített magának, meg a családjának, és fedeles karámokat az állatoknak. Ezért nevezték el azt a helyet Szukkótnak[a].
18 Így hát Jákób békességben visszatért Paddan-Arámból Kánaán földjére. Majd Sikem városa alá érkezett, és tábort vert a közelében. 19 Megvásárolta Hamórtól, Sikem apjától 100 mérték ezüstért azt a területet, ahol fölállította táborát. 20 Oltárt is épített ott Istennek, és így nevezte: „Isten, Izráel Istene”.

Jacob Meets Esau
33 And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, (A)Esau was coming, and four hundred men with him. So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two female servants. 2 And he put the servants with their children in front, then Leah with her children, and Rachel and Joseph last of all. 3 He himself went on before them, (B)bowing himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
4 (C)But Esau ran to meet him and embraced him (D)and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. 5 And when Esau lifted up his eyes and saw the women and children, he said, “Who are these with you?” Jacob said, (E)“The children whom God has graciously given your servant.” 6 Then the servants drew near, they and their children, and bowed down. 7 Leah likewise and her children drew near and bowed down. And last Joseph and Rachel drew near, and they bowed down. 8 Esau said, “What do you mean by (F)all this company[a] that I met?” Jacob answered, (G)“To find favor in the sight of my lord.” 9 But Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself.” 10 Jacob said, “No, please, if I have found favor in your sight, then accept my present from my hand. (H)For I have seen your face, which is like seeing the face of God, and you have accepted me. 11 Please accept my (I)blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough.” Thus he (J)urged him, and he took it.
12 Then Esau said, “Let us journey on our way, and I will go ahead of[b] you.” 13 But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are frail, and that the nursing flocks and herds are a care to me. If they are driven hard for one day, all the flocks will die. 14 Let my lord pass on ahead of his servant, and I will lead on slowly, at the pace of the livestock that are ahead of me and at the pace of the children, until I come to my lord (K)in Seir.”
15 So Esau said, “Let me leave with you some of the people who are with me.” But he said, “What need is there? (L)Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.” 16 So Esau returned that day on his way to (M)Seir. 17 But Jacob journeyed to (N)Succoth, and built himself a house and made booths for his livestock. Therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.[c]
18 And Jacob came safely[d] to the city of (O)Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, on his way from Paddan-aram, and he camped before the city. 19 And from the sons of (P)Hamor, Shechem's father, (Q)he bought for a hundred pieces of money[e] the piece of land on which he had pitched his tent. 20 There he erected an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel.[f]
