Building the Temple

6 Solomon began to build the temple for the Lord in the four hundred eightieth year(A) after the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of his reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, which is the second month.[a](B) 2 The temple that King Solomon built for the Lord(C) was ninety feet[b] long, thirty feet[c] wide, and forty-five feet[d] high.(D) 3 The portico in front of the temple sanctuary was thirty feet long extending across the temple’s width, and fifteen feet deep[e] in front of the temple.(E) 4 He also made windows with beveled frames[f] for the temple.(F)

5 He then built a chambered structure[g] along the temple wall, encircling the walls of the temple, that is, the sanctuary and the inner sanctuary.(G) And he made side chambers[h] all around.(H) 6 The lowest chamber was 7½ feet[i] wide, the middle was 9 feet[j] wide, and the third was 10½ feet[k] wide. He also provided offset ledges for the temple all around the outside so that nothing would be inserted into the temple walls. 7 The temple’s construction used finished stones cut at the quarry so that no hammer, chisel, or any iron tool was heard in the temple while it was being built.(I)

8 The door for the lowest[l] side chamber was on the right side of the temple. They[m] went up a stairway[n] to the middle chamber, and from the middle to the third. 9 When he finished building the temple,(J) he paneled it with boards and planks of cedar. 10 He built the chambers along the entire temple, joined to the temple with cedar beams;(K) each story was 7½ feet high.

11 The word of the Lord came to Solomon:(L) 12 “As for this temple you are building—if you walk in my statutes, observe my ordinances, and keep all my commands by walking in them,(M) I will fulfill my promise to you, which I made to your father David.(N) 13 I will dwell among the Israelites and not abandon my people Israel.”(O)

14 When Solomon finished building the temple,[o](P) 15 he paneled the interior temple walls with cedar boards; from the temple floor to the surface of the ceiling he overlaid the interior with wood. He also overlaid the floor with cypress boards.(Q) 16 Then he lined thirty feet of the rear of the temple with cedar boards from the floor to the surface of the ceiling,[p] and he built the interior as an inner sanctuary, the most holy place.(R) 17 The temple, that is, the sanctuary in front of the most holy place,[q] was sixty feet[r] long. 18 The cedar paneling inside the temple was carved with ornamental gourds(S) and flower blossoms. Everything was cedar;(T) not a stone could be seen.

19 He prepared the inner sanctuary(U) inside the temple to put the ark of the Lord’s covenant(V) there. 20 The interior of the sanctuary was thirty feet long, thirty feet wide, and thirty feet high; he overlaid it with pure gold.(W) He also overlaid the cedar altar. 21 Next, Solomon overlaid the interior of the temple with pure gold, and he hung[s] gold chains(X) across the front of the inner sanctuary(Y) and overlaid it with gold. 22 So he added the gold overlay to the entire temple until everything was completely finished, including the entire altar(Z) that belongs to the inner sanctuary.

23 In the inner sanctuary he made two cherubim(AA) 15 feet[t] high out of olive wood. 24 One wing of the first cherub was 7½ feet long, and the other wing was 7½ feet long. The wingspan was 15 feet from tip to tip. 25 The second cherub also was 15 feet; both cherubim had the same size and shape. 26 The first cherub’s height was 15 feet and so was the second cherub’s. 27 Then he put the cherubim inside the inner temple. Since their wings were spread out, the first one’s wing touched one wall while the second cherub’s wing touched the other[u] wall, and in the middle of the temple their wings were touching wing to wing.(AB) 28 He also overlaid the cherubim with gold.

29 He carved all the surrounding temple walls with carved engravings—cherubim,(AC) palm trees, and flower blossoms—in the inner and outer sanctuaries. 30 He overlaid the temple floor with gold in both the inner and the outer sanctuaries.

31 For the entrance of the inner sanctuary, he made olive wood doors.(AD) The pillars of the doorposts were five-sided.[v] 32 The two doors were made of olive wood. He carved cherubim, palm trees, and flower blossoms on them and overlaid them with gold, hammering gold over the cherubim and palm trees. 33 In the same way, he made four-sided[w] olive wood doorposts for the sanctuary entrance. 34 The two doors(AE) were made of cypress wood; the first door had two folding sides, and the second door had two folding panels. 35 He carved cherubim, palm trees, and flower blossoms on them and overlaid them with gold applied evenly over the carving. 36 He built the inner courtyard(AF) with three rows of dressed stone(AG) and a row of trimmed cedar beams.

37 The foundation of the Lord’s temple was laid in Solomon’s fourth year in the month of Ziv. 38 In his eleventh year in the month of Bul, which is the eighth month,[x] the temple was completed in every detail and according to every specification.(AH) So he built it in seven years.(AI)

6 It was in the 480th year after the people of Isra’el had left the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Shlomo’s reign over Isra’el, in the month of Ziv, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of Adonai. 2 The house which King Shlomo built for Adonai was 105 feet long, thirty-five feet wide and fifty-two-and-a-half feet high. 3 The hall fronting the temple of the house was thirty-five feet long, the same as the width of the house itself, so that its seventeen-and-a-half-foot width extended frontward from the house. 4 The windows he made for the house were wide on the inside and narrow on the outside. 5 Against the wall of the house he built an annex all the way around; it went all the way around the walls of the house, including both the temple and the sanctuary. 6 The lowest floor of the annex was eight-and-three-quarters feet wide, the middle floor ten-and-a-half feet wide and the third floor twelve-and-a-quarter feet wide; for he had made the outer part of the wall of the house step-shaped, so that the beams of the annex would not have to be attached to the house walls. 7 For the house, when under construction, was built of stone prepared at the quarry; so that no hammer, chisel or iron tool of any kind was heard in the house while it was being built. 8 The entrance to the lowest floor was on the south side of the house; a spiral staircase went up to the middle floor and on to the third. 9 So he built the house, and after finishing it, he put its roof on — cedar planks over beams. 10 Each floor of the annex surrounding the house was eight-and-three-quarters feet high and was attached to the house with beams of cedar.

11 Then this word of Adonai came to Shlomo: 12 “Concerning this house which you are building: if you will live according to my regulations, follow my rulings and observe all my mitzvot and live by them, then I will establish with you my promise that I made to David your father — 13 I will live in it among the people of Isra’el, and I will not abandon my people Isra’el.”

14 So Shlomo finished building the house. 15 The insides of the walls of the house he built with boards of cedar: from the floor of the house to the joists of the ceiling he covered them on the inside with wood, and he covered the floor of the house with boards of cypress. 16 The thirty-five-foot back portion of the house he built with boards of cedar from the floor to the joists and reserved this part of the house to be a sanctuary, the Especially Holy Place; 17 while the rest of the house, that is, the temple in front, was seventy feet long. 18 The cedar covering the house was carved with gourds and open flowers; all was cedar; no stone was visible. 19 In the inner part of the house he set up the sanctuary, so that the ark for the covenant of Adonai could be placed there. 20 This sanctuary was thirty-five feet long, wide and high; and it was overlaid with pure gold. In front of it he set an altar, which he covered with cedar. 21 Shlomo overlaid the interior of the house with pure gold and had chains of gold placed before the sanctuary, which itself he overlaid with gold. 22 The entire house he overlaid with gold until it was completely covered with it. He also overlaid with gold the entire altar that belonged to the sanctuary.

23 Inside the sanctuary he made two k’ruvim of olive-wood, each seventeen-and-a-half feet high. 24 Each of the two wings of one of the k’ruvim was eight-and-three quarters feet long, so that the distance from the end of one wing to the end of the other was seventeen-and-a-half feet. 25 Likewise the [wingspread of the] other keruv was seventeen-and-a-half feet; both k’ruvim were identical in shape and size. 26 The height of the one keruv was seventeen-and-a-half feet, likewise that of the other. 27 He set the k’ruvim in the inner house; the wings of the k’ruvim were stretched out, so that the wing of the one touched the one wall, and the wing of the other keruv touched the other wall; their wings touched each other in the middle of the house. 28 He overlaid the k’ruvim with gold. 29 All around the walls of the house, both inside the sanctuary and outside it, he carved figures of k’ruvim, palm trees and open flowers. 30 He overlaid the floor of the house with gold, both inside the sanctuary and outside it.

31 For the entrance to the sanctuary he made doors of olive-wood, set within a five-sided door-frame. 32 On the two olive-wood doors he carved figures of k’ruvim, palm trees and open flowers. He overlaid the doors with gold, forcing the gold into the shapes of the k’ruvim and palm trees as well. 33 For the entrance to the temple he also made doorposts of olive-wood, set within a rectangular door-frame, 34 and two doors of cypress-wood; the two leaves of the one door were folding, as were the two leaves of the other. 35 On them he carved k’ruvim, palm trees and open flowers, overlaying them with gold fitted to the carved work. 36 He built the inner courtyard with three rows of cut stone and a row of cedar beams.

37 The foundation of the house of Adonai was laid in the fourth year, in the month of Ziv. 38 In the eleventh year, in the month of Bul, which is the eighth month, all parts of the house were completed exactly as designed. Thus he was seven years building it.

6 (A)Y sucedió que en el año cuatrocientos ochenta después que los hijos de Israel salieron de la tierra de Egipto, en el cuarto año del reinado de Salomón sobre Israel, en el mes de Zif, que es el segundo mes, comenzó él a edificar[a] la casa del Señor. 2 La casa que el rey Salomón edificó para el Señor tenía sesenta codos[b] de[c] largo, veinte codos de[d] ancho y treinta codos de[e] alto. 3 Y el pórtico delante de la nave del templo[f] tenía veinte codos de[g] largo, conforme al[h] ancho de la casa, y su ancho al frente de la casa era de diez codos. 4 También para la casa hizo ventanas con celosías(B). 5 Junto a la pared de la casa(C) edificó pisos alrededor de las paredes de la casa, tanto de la nave como del santuario interior(D), e hizo cámaras laterales en derredor(E). 6 El piso inferior tenía cinco codos de ancho, y el del medio tenía seis codos de ancho, y el tercero tenía siete codos de ancho; porque por fuera hizo[i] rebajos en la pared de la casa por todo alrededor para no empotrar[j] las vigas en las paredes de la casa. 7 La casa, mientras se edificaba, se construía de piedras preparadas[k] en la cantera; y no se oyó ni martillo ni hacha ni ningún instrumento de hierro(F) en la casa mientras la construían. 8 La entrada a la cámara lateral inferior[l] estaba al lado derecho de la casa; y se subía por una escalera de caracol al piso del medio, y del medio al tercero. 9 Edificó, pues, la casa y la terminó(G); y cubrió la casa con vigas y tablas[m] de cedro. 10 También edificó pisos junto a toda la casa, cada uno de cinco codos de alto, y estaban asegurados a[n] la casa con vigas de cedro.

11 Y la palabra del Señor vino a Salomón, diciendo: 12 En cuanto a esta casa que estás edificando, si tú andas en mis estatutos, cumples mis ordenanzas y guardas todos mis mandamientos andando en ellos, yo cumpliré[o] mi palabra contigo, la cual hablé a David tu padre(H), 13 habitaré en medio de los hijos de Israel(I), y no abandonaré(J) a mi pueblo Israel.

14 Salomón, pues, edificó la casa y la terminó(K). 15 Luego construyó las paredes de la casa por dentro con tablas de cedro; desde el suelo de la casa hasta el techo[p](L) recubrió las paredes interiores de madera; recubrió también el piso de la casa con tablas de ciprés. 16 Edificó los veinte codos del fondo de la casa con tablas de cedro desde el suelo hasta el techo[q](M); así[r] le edificó el santuario interior, el lugar santísimo(N). 17 La casa, es decir, la nave delante del santuario interior tenía cuarenta codos de largo. 18 Y por dentro la casa estaba revestida de cedro tallado en forma de calabazas(O) y flores abiertas; todo era cedro, no se veía la piedra. 19 Entonces preparó el santuario interior dentro de la casa, para colocar allí el arca del pacto del Señor. 20 Y el[s] santuario interior tenía veinte codos de largo, veinte codos de ancho y veinte codos de alto, y lo revistió de oro puro; y el altar lo recubrió de cedro. 21 Salomón revistió el interior de la casa de oro puro. Puso cadenas de oro a lo largo del frente del santuario interior, y lo revistió de oro. 22 Revistió de oro toda la casa, hasta que toda la casa estuvo terminada. También revistió de oro todo el altar(P) que estaba junto al santuario interior.

23 También en el santuario interior hizo dos querubines de madera de olivo, cada uno de diez codos de alto(Q). 24 Un ala del querubín tenía cinco codos y la otra ala del querubín cinco codos; desde la punta de una de sus alas hasta la punta de la otra de sus alas había diez codos. 25 El otro querubín también medía diez codos; ambos querubines tenían la misma medida y la misma forma. 26 La altura de uno de los querubines era de diez codos, y asimismo la del otro querubín. 27 Colocó los querubines en medio de la casa interior; las alas de los querubines se extendían(R) de modo que el ala del uno tocaba una pared y el ala del otro querubín tocaba la otra pared. Sus otras dos alas se tocaban ala con ala en el centro de la casa. 28 También revistió de oro los querubines.

29 Luego talló todas las paredes de la casa en derredor con grabados de figuras de querubines, palmeras y flores abiertas, el santuario interior y el exterior. 30 Revistió de oro el piso de la casa, el santuario interior y el exterior. 31 Y para la entrada del santuario interior hizo puertas de madera de olivo, el dintel y postes pentagonales. 32 Las dos puertas eran de madera de olivo, y talló en ellas figuras de querubines, palmeras y flores abiertas, y las revistió de oro; cubrió también de oro los querubines y las palmeras. 33 Hizo además para la entrada de la nave postes cuadrangulares de madera de olivo, 34 y dos puertas de madera de ciprés; las dos hojas de una puerta eran giratorias, y las dos hojas[t] de la otra puerta también eran giratorias(S). 35 Talló en ellas querubines, palmeras y flores abiertas, y las revistió de oro bien ajustado a la talladura. 36 Edificó el atrio interior con tres hileras de piedra labrada y una hilera de vigas de cedro(T).

37 En el cuarto año, en el mes de Zif, se echaron los cimientos de la casa del Señor(U), 38 y en el año undécimo, en el mes de Bul, que es el mes octavo, la casa fue acabada en todas sus partes y conforme a todos sus planos. La edificó, pues, en siete años.
