GOD’S WORD Translation
Solomon’s Marriage(A)
3 Solomon became the son-in-law of Pharaoh (the king of Egypt). After marrying Pharaoh’s daughter, Solomon brought her to the City of David until he finished building his own house, the Lord’s house, and the wall around Jerusalem.
2 The people were still sacrificing at other worship sites because a temple for the name of the Lord had not yet been built. 3 Solomon loved the Lord and lived by his father David’s rules. However, he still sacrificed and burned incense at these other worship sites.
Solomon Requests Wisdom from God(B)
4 King Solomon went to Gibeon to sacrifice because it was the most important place of worship. Solomon sacrificed 1,000 burnt offerings on that altar.
5 In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream at night. He said, “What can I give you?”
6 Solomon responded, “You’ve shown great love to my father David, who was your servant. He lived in your presence with truth, righteousness, and commitment. And you continued to show him your great love by giving him a son to sit on his throne today.
7 “Lord my God, although I’m young and inexperienced, you’ve made me king in place of my father David. 8 I’m among your people whom you have chosen. They are too numerous to count or record. 9 Give me a heart that listens so that I can judge your people and tell the difference between good and evil. After all, who can judge this great people of yours?”
10 The Lord [a] was pleased that Solomon asked for this. 11 God replied, “You’ve asked for this and not for a long life, or riches for yourself, or the death of your enemies. Instead, you’ve asked for understanding so that you can do what is right. 12 So I’m going to do what you’ve asked. I’m giving you a wise and understanding heart so that there will never be anyone like you. 13 I’m also giving you what you haven’t asked for—riches and honor—so that no other king will be like you as long as you live. 14 And if you follow me and obey my laws and commands as your father David did, then I will also give you a long life.”
15 Solomon woke up and realized it had been a dream. He went to Jerusalem and stood in front of the ark of the Lord’s promise. He sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings and held a banquet for all his officials.
Solomon’s Wisdom in Action
16 A short time later two prostitutes came to the king and stood in front of him. 17 One woman said to him, “Sir, this woman and I live in the same house. I gave birth ⌞to a son⌟ while she was with me in the house. 18 Two days later this woman also gave birth ⌞to a son⌟. We were alone. No one else was with us. Just the two of us were in the house. 19 That night this woman’s son died because she rolled over on top of him. 20 So she got up during the night and took my son, who was beside me, while I was asleep. She held him in her arms. Then she laid her dead son in my arms. 21 When I got up in the morning to nurse my son, he was dead! I took a good look at him and realized that he wasn’t my son at all!”
22 The other woman said, “No! My son is alive—your son is dead.”
The first woman kept on saying, “No! Your son is dead—my son is alive.” So they argued in front of the king.
23 The king said, “This one keeps saying, ‘My son is alive—your son is dead,’ and that one keeps saying, ‘No! Your son is dead—my son is alive.’ ”
24 So the king told his servants to bring him a sword. When they brought it, 25 he said, “Cut the living child in two. Give half to the one and half to the other.”
26 Then the woman whose son was still alive was deeply moved by her love for the child. She said to the king, “Please, sir, give her the living child. Please don’t kill him!”
But the other woman said, “He won’t be mine or yours. Cut him ⌞in two⌟.”
27 The king replied, “Give the living child to the first woman. Don’t kill him. She is his mother.”
28 All Israel heard about the decision the king made. They respected the king very highly, because they saw he possessed wisdom from God to do what was right.

Salomão pede sabedoria
3 Salomão fez um acordo com o faraó, rei do Egito, e se casou com uma das filhas dele. Trouxe-a para morar na Cidade de Davi até terminar a construção do palácio real, do templo do Senhor e do muro ao redor de Jerusalém. 2 Nessa época, o povo de Israel oferecia sacrifícios nos altares das colinas de suas regiões, pois ainda não havia sido construído um templo em honra ao nome do Senhor.
3 Salomão amava o Senhor, seguindo os decretos de seu pai, Davi, exceto pelo fato de oferecer sacrifícios e queimar incenso nos altares das colinas. 4 O lugar de adoração mais importante ficava em Gibeom, por isso o rei Salomão foi para lá e ofereceu mil holocaustos. 5 Naquela noite, o Senhor apareceu a Salomão num sonho e lhe disse: “Peça o que quiser, e eu lhe darei”.
6 Salomão respondeu: “Tu mostraste grande amor leal ao teu servo, meu pai, Davi, pois ele foi fiel, justo e verdadeiro diante de ti. Agora, continuaste a mostrar teu grande amor leal dando-lhe um filho para sentar-se em seu trono.
7 “Agora, ó Senhor, meu Deus, tu me fizeste reinar em lugar de meu pai, Davi, mas sou como uma criança pequena que não sabe o que fazer. 8 Aqui estou, no meio do teu povo escolhido, uma nação tão grande e numerosa que nem se pode contar! 9 Dá a teu servo um coração compreensivo, para que eu possa governar bem o teu povo e saber a diferença entre o certo e o errado. Pois quem é capaz de governar sozinho este teu grande povo?”.
10 O Senhor se agradou do pedido de Salomão. 11 Por isso, Deus respondeu: “Uma vez que você pediu sabedoria para governar meu povo com justiça, e não vida longa, nem riqueza, nem a morte de seus inimigos, 12 atenderei a seu pedido. Eu lhe darei um coração sábio e compassivo, como ninguém teve nem jamais terá. 13 Também lhe darei o que não pediu: riquezas e fama. Nenhum outro rei em todo o mundo se comparará a você pelo resto de sua vida. 14 E, se você me seguir e obedecer a meus decretos e mandamentos, como fez seu pai, Davi, eu lhe darei vida longa”.
15 Então Salomão acordou e percebeu que tinha sido um sonho. Voltou a Jerusalém e se colocou diante da arca da aliança do Senhor, onde apresentou holocaustos e ofertas de paz. Depois, ofereceu um grande banquete a todos os seus oficiais.
Salomão julga com sabedoria
16 Algum tempo depois, duas prostitutas compareceram diante do rei para resolver uma questão. 17 Disse uma delas: “Por favor, meu senhor, esta mulher e eu moramos na mesma casa. Eu dei à luz um filho quando ela estava comigo na casa. 18 Três dias depois, esta mulher também deu à luz um filho. Estávamos só nós duas na casa; não havia mais ninguém ali.
19 “O bebê dela morreu durante a noite, porque ela rolou sobre ele enquanto dormia. 20 Então ela se levantou de noite, tirou meu filho do meu lado enquanto eu dormia e o pôs para dormir ao lado dela. Depois, colocou o filho dela, que estava morto, em meus braços. 21 De manhã, bem cedo, quando fui amamentar meu filho, ele estava morto! Quando o observei mais de perto, na claridade do dia, vi que não era meu”.
22 “Não!”, interrompeu a outra mulher. “O filho morto era seu, e o vivo é meu!”
“Não!”, disse a primeira mulher. “O filho vivo é meu, e o morto era seu!” E assim elas discutiram diante do rei.
23 Então o rei disse: “Vamos esclarecer as coisas. As duas afirmam que o filho vivo é seu, e cada uma diz que o morto é da outra. 24 Pois bem, tragam-me uma espada”. E trouxeram uma espada para o rei.
25 Ele disse: “Cortem a criança viva ao meio e deem metade a uma mulher e metade à outra!”.
26 Então, por causa de seu amor pelo menino, a verdadeira mãe gritou: “Não, meu senhor! Dê o menino a ela. Por favor, não o mate!”.
A outra mulher, porém, disse: “Muito bem, ele não será nem meu nem seu. Dividam a criança ao meio!”.
27 Então o rei disse: “Não matem o bebê. Deem o menino à mulher que deseja que ele viva, pois ela é a mãe”.
28 Quando todo o Israel soube da decisão do rei, teve grande respeito por ele, pois viu a sabedoria que Deus lhe tinha dado para fazer justiça.

Solomon Asks for Wisdom(A)
3 Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt and married(B) his daughter.(C) He brought her to the City of David(D) until he finished building his palace(E) and the temple of the Lord, and the wall around Jerusalem. 2 The people, however, were still sacrificing at the high places,(F) because a temple had not yet been built for the Name(G) of the Lord. 3 Solomon showed his love(H) for the Lord by walking(I) according to the instructions(J) given him by his father David, except that he offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places.(K)
4 The king went to Gibeon(L) to offer sacrifices, for that was the most important high place, and Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. 5 At Gibeon the Lord appeared(M) to Solomon during the night in a dream,(N) and God said, “Ask(O) for whatever you want me to give you.”
6 Solomon answered, “You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful(P) to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son(Q) to sit on his throne this very day.
7 “Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child(R) and do not know how to carry out my duties. 8 Your servant is here among the people you have chosen,(S) a great people, too numerous to count or number.(T) 9 So give your servant a discerning(U) heart to govern your people and to distinguish(V) between right and wrong. For who is able(W) to govern this great people of yours?”
10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. 11 So God said to him, “Since you have asked(X) for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment(Y) in administering justice, 12 I will do what you have asked.(Z) I will give you a wise(AA) and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. 13 Moreover, I will give you what you have not(AB) asked for—both wealth and honor(AC)—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal(AD) among kings. 14 And if you walk(AE) in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.”(AF) 15 Then Solomon awoke(AG)—and he realized it had been a dream.(AH)
He returned to Jerusalem, stood before the ark of the Lord’s covenant and sacrificed burnt offerings(AI) and fellowship offerings.(AJ) Then he gave a feast(AK) for all his court.
A Wise Ruling
16 Now two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. 17 One of them said, “Pardon me, my lord. This woman and I live in the same house, and I had a baby while she was there with me. 18 The third day after my child was born, this woman also had a baby. We were alone; there was no one in the house but the two of us.
19 “During the night this woman’s son died because she lay on him. 20 So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while I your servant was asleep. She put him by her breast and put her dead son by my breast. 21 The next morning, I got up to nurse my son—and he was dead! But when I looked at him closely in the morning light, I saw that it wasn’t the son I had borne.”
22 The other woman said, “No! The living one is my son; the dead one is yours.”
But the first one insisted, “No! The dead one is yours; the living one is mine.” And so they argued before the king.
23 The king said, “This one says, ‘My son is alive and your son is dead,’ while that one says, ‘No! Your son is dead and mine is alive.’”
24 Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword for the king. 25 He then gave an order: “Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other.”
26 The woman whose son was alive was deeply moved(AL) out of love for her son and said to the king, “Please, my lord, give her the living baby! Don’t kill him!”
But the other said, “Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!”
27 Then the king gave his ruling: “Give the living baby to the first woman. Do not kill him; she is his mother.”
28 When all Israel heard the verdict the king had given, they held the king in awe, because they saw that he had wisdom(AM) from God to administer justice.
