Salomón pide sabiduría para
gobernar
3 Salomón emparentó con el faraón, rey de Egipto, porque tomó a la hija del faraón y la trajo a la Ciudad de David, mientras acababa de edificar su casa, la casa del SEÑOR y los muros alrededor de Jerusalén.
2 Hasta entonces[a] el pueblo ofrecía sacrificios en los lugares altos, porque en aquellos tiempos no había sido edificada una casa al nombre del SEÑOR. 3 Salomón amaba al SEÑOR y caminaba en los estatutos de su padre David; solo que sacrificaba y quemaba incienso en los lugares altos.
4 Entonces el rey fue a Gabaón, que era el lugar alto principal, para ofrecer sacrificios allí. Salomón ofreció mil holocaustos sobre aquel altar. 5 En Gabaón el SEÑOR se apareció a Salomón en el sueño de la noche. Y le dijo Dios:
—Pide lo que quieras que yo te dé.
6 Y Salomón respondió:
—Tú has mostrado gran misericordia a tu siervo David, mi padre, porque él anduvo delante de ti con fidelidad, con justicia y con rectitud de corazón para contigo.Tú le has conservado esta gran misericordia y le has dado un hijo que se siente en su trono, como en este día. 7 Y ahora, oh SEÑOR, Dios mío, tú has constituido a tu siervo rey en lugar de mi padre David, a pesar de que yo soy muy joven y no sé cómo salir ni entrar. 8 Tu siervo está en medio de tu pueblo al cual escogiste; un pueblo tan numeroso que por su multitud no se puede contar ni se puede numerar. 9 Da, pues, a tu siervo un corazón que sepa escuchar, para juzgar a tu pueblo, y para discernir entre lo bueno y lo malo. Porque, ¿quién podrá gobernar a este tu pueblo tan grande?
10 Pareció bien al Señor que Salomón pidiera esto. 11 Y Dios le dijo:
—Porque has pedido esto, y no has pedido para ti muchos años ni has pedido para ti riquezas ni has pedido la vida de tus enemigos, sino que has pedido para ti discernimiento para administrar justicia, 12 he aquí que yo haré conforme a tus palabras. He aquí que yo te daré un corazón sabio y entendido, tal que no ha habido antes de ti otro como tú ni después de ti se levantará otro como tú. 13 Y también te daré las cosas que no has pedido: riquezas y gloria tales que no haya nadie como tú entre los reyes en todos tus días. 14 Y si andas en mis caminos, guardando mis leyes y mis mandamientos, como anduvo tu padre David, yo prolongaré tus días.
15 Cuando Salomón despertó, he aquí que había sido un sueño. Entonces volvió a Jerusalén, se puso de pie delante del arca del pacto del Señor, ofreció holocaustos e hizo sacrificios de paz. También dio un banquete a todos sus servidores.
Salomón revela sabiduría como juez
16 Por aquel entonces dos prostitutas vinieron al rey y se pusieron de pie delante de él. 17 Una de ellas dijo:
—¡Ay, señor mío! Esta mujer y yo habitábamos en la misma casa. Yo di a luz mientras estaba en la casa con ella. 18 Y sucedió que tres días después de mi parto, esta mujer también dio a luz. Las dos estábamos juntas, y nadie de fuera estaba con nosotras en casa; solo nosotras dos estábamos en casa. 19 Cierta noche murió el hijo de esta mujer, porque ella se recostó encima de él. 20 Entonces se levantó a medianoche, y estando yo, tu sierva, dormida, ella tomó a mi hijo de mi lado, y lo puso en su seno; y puso a su hijo muerto en mi seno. 21 Cuando me levanté por la mañana para dar de mamar a mi hijo, he aquí que estaba muerto. Pero lo observé bien por la mañana y he aquí que no era mi hijo, el que yo había dado a luz.
22 Entonces dijo la otra mujer:
—¡No! Sino que mi hijo es el que vive, y tu hijo es el muerto.
Y la otra volvió a decir:
—¡No! Sino que tu hijo es el muerto, y mi hijo es el que vive.
Así hablaban delante del rey. 23 Entonces el rey dijo:
—Esta dice: “Mi hijo es el que vive, y tu hijo es el muerto”; y la otra dice: “¡No! Sino que tu hijo es el muerto, y mi hijo es el que vive”. 24 —Y el rey añadió—: ¡Tráiganme una espada!
Trajeron la espada ante el rey, 25 y enseguida dijo el rey:
—¡Partan al niño vivo en dos, y den la mitad a la una y la otra mitad a la otra!
26 Entonces la mujer de quien era el hijo vivo habló al rey, porque sus entrañas se conmovieron por su hijo, y dijo:
—¡Ay, señor mío! Den a esta el niño vivo; no lo maten.
Pero la otra dijo:
—No será ni para mí ni para ti. Pártanlo.
27 El rey respondió diciendo:
—Den a aquella el hijo vivo. No lo maten; ella es su madre.
28 Todo Israel se enteró de la sentencia que había dado el rey, y tuvieron temor al rey, porque vieron que en él había sabiduría de Dios para administrar justicia.

Solomon Requests Wisdom(A)
3 Now (B)Solomon made [a]a treaty with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and married Pharaoh’s daughter; then he brought her (C)to the City of David until he had finished building his (D)own house, and (E)the house of the Lord, and (F)the wall all around Jerusalem. 2 (G)Meanwhile the people sacrificed at the high places, because there was no house built for the name of the Lord until those days. 3 And Solomon (H)loved the Lord, (I)walking in the statutes of his father David, except that he sacrificed and burned incense at the high places.
4 Now (J)the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, (K)for that was the great high place: Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. 5 (L)At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon (M)in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask! What shall I give you?”
6 (N)And Solomon said: “You have shown great mercy to Your servant David my father, because he (O)walked before You in truth, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with You; You have continued this great kindness for him, and You (P)have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. 7 Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a (Q)little child; I do not know how (R)to go out or come in. 8 And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You (S)have chosen, a great people, (T)too numerous to be numbered or counted. 9 (U)Therefore give to Your servant an [b]understanding heart (V)to judge Your people, that I may (W)discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”
10 The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. 11 Then God said to him: “Because you have asked this thing, and have (X)not asked long life for yourself, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice, 12 (Y)behold, I have done according to your words; (Z)see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you. 13 And I have also (AA)given you what you have not asked: both (AB)riches and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days. 14 So (AC)if you walk in My ways, to keep My statutes and My commandments, (AD)as your father David walked, then I will (AE)lengthen[c] your days.”
15 Then Solomon (AF)awoke; and indeed it had been a dream. And he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, offered up burnt offerings, offered peace offerings, and (AG)made a feast for all his servants.
Solomon’s Wise Judgment
16 Now two women who were harlots came to the king, and (AH)stood before him. 17 And one woman said, “O my lord, this woman and I dwell in the same house; and I gave birth while she was in the house. 18 Then it happened, the third day after I had given birth, that this woman also gave birth. And we were together; [d]no one was with us in the house, except the two of us in the house. 19 And this woman’s son died in the night, because she lay on him. 20 So she arose in the middle of the night and took my son from my side, while your maidservant slept, and laid him in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. 21 And when I rose in the morning to nurse my son, there he was, dead. But when I had examined him in the morning, indeed, he was not my son whom I had borne.”
22 Then the other woman said, “No! But the living one is my son, and the dead one is your son.”
And the first woman said, “No! But the dead one is your son, and the living one is my son.”
Thus they spoke before the king.
23 And the king said, “The one says, ‘This is my son, who lives, and your son is the dead one’; and the other says, ‘No! But your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.’ ” 24 Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword before the king. 25 And the king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give half to one, and half to the other.”
26 Then the woman whose son was living spoke to the king, for (AI)she yearned with compassion for her son; and she said, “O my lord, give her the living child, and by no means kill him!”
But the other said, “Let him be neither mine nor yours, but divide him.”
27 So the king answered and said, “Give the first woman the living child, and by no means kill him; she is his mother.”
28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had rendered; and they feared the king, for they saw that the (AJ)wisdom of God was in him to administer justice.
