De laatste woorden van koning David
2 Toen David voelde dat hij niet lang meer zou leven, liet hij zijn zoon Salomo komen. 2 Hij zei tegen hem: "Ook ik ga nu sterven, zoals uiteindelijk iedereen. Wees vastberaden en laat zien wat je kan. 3 Dien je Heer God en leef zoals Hij het wil. Houd je aan al zijn wetten en leefregels zoals die staan opgeschreven in de wet van Mozes. Want dan zal het goed met je gaan in alles wat je doet. 4 En dan kan de Heer doen wat Hij mij heeft beloofd. Hij heeft tegen me gezegd: 'Als je zonen leven zoals Ik het wil en met hart en ziel trouw zijn aan Mij en dicht bij Mij leven, dan zal altijd een van jouw zonen koning van Israël zijn.'
5 Je weet wat Joab, de zoon van Zeruja, mij heeft aangedaan. Hij heeft in vredestijd twee aanvoerders van het leger van Israël vermoord: Abner de zoon van Ner, en Amasa de zoon van Jeter.[a] Hij is schuldig aan de dood van twee onschuldige mensen. Hij heeft hen in vredestijd gedood. 6 Doe nu wat jou het beste lijkt. Zorg ervoor dat de oude Joab geen vredige dood zal sterven.
7 Maar voor de zonen van Barzillai uit Gilead moet je goed zijn. Laat hen bij jou aan tafel eten. Want toen ik voor je broer Absalom op de vlucht was, zijn ze naar mij toe gekomen en hebben ze voor mij gezorgd.[b]
8 Dan is er ook nog Simeï, de zoon van Gera, uit Bahurim in het gebied van de stam van Benjamin. Hij heeft mij vreselijk lopen vervloeken toen ik naar Mahanaïm vluchtte. Maar toen ik terugkwam, kwam hij me bij de Jordaan ophalen. Ik heb hem toen bij de Heer gezworen dat ik hem niet zou doden.[c] 9 Maar nu moet jij hem niet ongestraft laten. Je bent een wijs man en je weet vast wel wat je moet doen, zodat de oude Simeï geen vredige dood zal sterven."
10 Toen stierf David. Hij werd begraven in de 'Stad van David'.[d] 11 David had 40 jaar over Israël geregeerd. In Hebron was hij zeven jaar koning over Juda geweest, in Jeruzalem was hij 33 jaar koning over heel Israël. 12 Salomo volgde David als koning op. En God maakte hem heel machtig.
Koning Salomo laat zijn broer Adonia doden
13 Adonia ging naar Batseba, de moeder van Salomo. Ze vroeg hem: "Kom je met goede bedoelingen?" 14 Hij antwoordde: "Ja, ik wil iets met u bespreken." Ze zei: "Zeg het." 15 Toen zei Adonia: "U weet dat ik er recht op had om koning te worden. En heel Israël verwachtte ook dat ik koning zou worden. Maar het liep anders. Mijn broer werd koning, doordat de Heer hem uitkoos. 16 Nu wil ik u iets vragen. Luister alstublieft naar mij." 17 Ze zei: "Zeg het." Hij zei: "Vraag alstublieft aan koning Salomo of ik mag trouwen met Abisag, de vrouw uit Sunem. Als u het hem vraagt, zal hij het zeker goedvinden." 18 Batseba antwoordde: "Ik zal het er met de koning over hebben."
19 Batseba ging naar koning Salomo om met hem over Adonia te spreken. De koning stond op, liep haar tegemoet en boog zich diep voor haar. Daarna ging hij op zijn troon zitten. Rechts van zich liet hij een stoel neerzetten voor zijn moeder. Ze ging naast hem zitten. 20 Ze zei: "Ik wil een kleinigheid van je vragen. Ik hoop dat je het wil doen." De koning zei tegen haar: "Vraag het maar, moeder, ik zal doen wat u vraagt." 21 Toen zei ze: "Je broer Adonia wil graag trouwen met Abisag, de vrouw uit Sunem." 22 Maar koning Salomo zei tegen zijn moeder: "Waarom vraagt u me alleen maar om Abisag aan Adonia te geven? U kan mij net zo goed vragen om het koningschap aan hem te geven omdat hij mijn oudere broer is![e] Dat zouden de priester Abjatar en Joab ook wel graag willen!" 23 En koning Salomo zwoer bij de Heer: "Ik zweer bij God dat Adonia's vraag hem het leven zal kosten.[f] 24 Vandaag nog zal ik hem doden. Dat zweer ik bij de Heer, die mij het koningschap en de troon van mijn vader David heeft gegeven, en die mij heeft beloofd dat altijd één van mijn zonen koning zal zijn." 25 En hij liet Adonia door Benaja doden.
Salomo stuurt de priester Abjatar weg
26 Tegen de priester Abjatar zei de koning: "Ga op je eigen stuk grond bij Anatot wonen. Eigenlijk verdien je de doodstraf. Dat ik je niet dood, is alleen maar omdat je voor mijn vader David de kist van de Heer hebt gedragen en omdat je samen met mijn vader alle moeilijkheden hebt verdragen die hem zijn overkomen." 27 Zo joeg Salomo Abjatar weg, zodat hij geen priester van de Heer meer was. Zo werd werkelijkheid wat de Heer in Silo had gezegd over de familie van Eli.[g]
Salomo laat Joab doden
28 Toen Joab dit hoorde, vluchtte hij naar de tent van de Heer. Daar greep hij de horens op de hoeken van het altaar vast zodat Salomo hem niets zou durven doen uit ontzag voor het altaar. Hij had vroeger niet de kant van Absalom gekozen, maar nu wel de kant van Adonia. 29 Koning Salomo kreeg het bericht: "Joab is naar het altaar bij de tent van de Heer gevlucht." Toen stuurde Salomo Benaja naar de tent met de woorden: "Ga erheen en steek hem dood." 30 Benaja ging naar de tent van de Heer en zei tegen Joab: "De koning beveelt je naar buiten te komen." Maar hij zei: "Nee, ik wil hier sterven." Benaja bracht Joabs antwoord aan de koning over. 31 Toen zei de koning tegen hem: "Doe wat hij heeft gezegd. Steek hem dood en begraaf hem. Neem zo voor mij en mijn vader wraak voor de moord op twee onschuldige mannen,[h] want hij heeft hen zonder reden gedood. 32 Zo zal de Heer Joab straffen voor de moord op twee mannen die rechtvaardiger en beter waren dan hij. Hij heeft Abner, de aanvoerder van Israël, en Amasa, de aanvoerder van Juda, met zijn zwaard neergestoken en gedood, zonder dat mijn vader hem dat had bevolen. 33 Zo zullen hij en zijn familie worden gestraft voor de dood van twee onschuldige mannen. Maar David en zijn familie zullen voor altijd vrede hebben met de Heer." 34 Benaja vertrok weer en stak Joab dood. Joab werd in zijn huis in de woestijn begraven. 35 En de koning maakte Benaja in Joabs plaats aanvoerder van het leger. De priester Zadok maakte hij hogepriester in de plaats van Abjatar.
Salomo straft Simeï
36 Daarna liet de koning Simeï komen. Hij zei tegen hem: "Bouw voor jezelf een huis in Jeruzalem en ga daar wonen. Je mag Jeruzalem niet verlaten. Je mag nergens heen. 37 Ik waarschuw je: als je Jeruzalem uitgaat en de beek Kidron oversteekt, zul je worden gedood. Dat zal dan je eigen schuld zijn." 38 Simeï zei tegen de koning: "Het is goed. Ik zal doen wat u heeft gezegd, mijn heer de koning." En Simeï woonde een tijd in Jeruzalem.
39 Maar na drie jaar liepen twee slaven van Simeï weg naar Achis, de zoon van Maächa, de koning van Gat. Simeï kreeg het bericht dat zijn slaven in Gat waren. 40 Hij zadelde zijn ezel en ging naar Gat, naar Achis, om zijn slaven te zoeken. Hij haalde ze terug uit Gat. 41 Salomo hoorde dat Simeï uit Jeruzalem naar Gat was gegaan en weer terug was gekomen. 42 Hij liet Simeï roepen. Hij zei tegen hem: "Ik heb je bij de Heer gezworen en je ingeprent: 'Onthoud dat je wordt gedood als je de stad verlaat.' En je hebt mij geantwoord: 'Dat is goed.' 43 Waarom heb je je er dan niet aan gehouden? 44 Je weet wat je mijn vader David hebt aangedaan. Diep in je hart weet je dat je schuldig bent. Nu zal de Heer je ervoor straffen. 45 Maar de Heer zal mij, koning Salomo, zegenen. Hij zal ervoor zorgen dat altijd een zoon van David koning zal zijn." 46 Toen gaf de koning aan Benaja het bevel om hem te doden. Benaja stak hem buiten dood. En de Heer maakte Salomo machtig.

David’s Charge to Solomon(A)
2 When the time drew near for David to die,(B) he gave a charge to Solomon his son.
2 “I am about to go the way of all the earth,”(C) he said. “So be strong,(D) act like a man, 3 and observe(E) what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper(F) in all you do and wherever you go 4 and that the Lord may keep his promise(G) to me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully(H) before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’
5 “Now you yourself know what Joab(I) son of Zeruiah did to me—what he did to the two commanders of Israel’s armies, Abner(J) son of Ner and Amasa(K) son of Jether. He killed them, shedding their blood in peacetime as if in battle, and with that blood he stained the belt around his waist and the sandals on his feet. 6 Deal with him according to your wisdom,(L) but do not let his gray head go down to the grave in peace.
7 “But show kindness(M) to the sons of Barzillai(N) of Gilead and let them be among those who eat at your table.(O) They stood by me when I fled from your brother Absalom.
8 “And remember, you have with you Shimei(P) son of Gera, the Benjamite from Bahurim, who called down bitter curses on me the day I went to Mahanaim.(Q) When he came down to meet me at the Jordan, I swore(R) to him by the Lord: ‘I will not put you to death by the sword.’ 9 But now, do not consider him innocent. You are a man of wisdom;(S) you will know what to do to him. Bring his gray head down to the grave in blood.”
10 Then David rested with his ancestors and was buried(T) in the City of David.(U) 11 He had reigned(V) forty years over Israel—seven years in Hebron and thirty-three in Jerusalem. 12 So Solomon sat on the throne(W) of his father David, and his rule was firmly established.(X)
Solomon’s Throne Established
13 Now Adonijah,(Y) the son of Haggith, went to Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother. Bathsheba asked him, “Do you come peacefully?”(Z)
He answered, “Yes, peacefully.” 14 Then he added, “I have something to say to you.”
“You may say it,” she replied.
15 “As you know,” he said, “the kingdom was mine. All Israel looked to me as their king. But things changed, and the kingdom has gone to my brother; for it has come to him from the Lord. 16 Now I have one request to make of you. Do not refuse me.”
“You may make it,” she said.
17 So he continued, “Please ask King Solomon—he will not refuse you—to give me Abishag(AA) the Shunammite as my wife.”
18 “Very well,” Bathsheba replied, “I will speak to the king for you.”
19 When Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah, the king stood up to meet her, bowed down to her and sat down on his throne. He had a throne brought for the king’s mother,(AB) and she sat down at his right hand.(AC)
20 “I have one small request to make of you,” she said. “Do not refuse me.”
The king replied, “Make it, my mother; I will not refuse you.”
21 So she said, “Let Abishag(AD) the Shunammite be given in marriage to your brother Adonijah.”
22 King Solomon answered his mother, “Why do you request Abishag(AE) the Shunammite for Adonijah? You might as well request the kingdom for him—after all, he is my older brother(AF)—yes, for him and for Abiathar(AG) the priest and Joab son of Zeruiah!”
23 Then King Solomon swore by the Lord: “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely,(AH) if Adonijah does not pay with his life for this request! 24 And now, as surely as the Lord lives—he who has established me securely on the throne of my father David and has founded a dynasty for me as he promised(AI)—Adonijah shall be put to death today!” 25 So King Solomon gave orders to Benaiah(AJ) son of Jehoiada, and he struck down Adonijah and he died.(AK)
26 To Abiathar(AL) the priest the king said, “Go back to your fields in Anathoth.(AM) You deserve to die, but I will not put you to death now, because you carried the ark(AN) of the Sovereign Lord before my father David and shared all my father’s hardships.”(AO) 27 So Solomon removed Abiathar from the priesthood of the Lord, fulfilling(AP) the word the Lord had spoken at Shiloh about the house of Eli.
28 When the news reached Joab, who had conspired with Adonijah though not with Absalom, he fled to the tent of the Lord and took hold of the horns(AQ) of the altar. 29 King Solomon was told that Joab had fled to the tent of the Lord and was beside the altar.(AR) Then Solomon ordered Benaiah(AS) son of Jehoiada, “Go, strike him down!”
30 So Benaiah entered the tent(AT) of the Lord and said to Joab, “The king says, ‘Come out!(AU)’”
But he answered, “No, I will die here.”
Benaiah reported to the king, “This is how Joab answered me.”
31 Then the king commanded Benaiah, “Do as he says. Strike him down and bury him, and so clear me and my whole family of the guilt of the innocent blood(AV) that Joab shed. 32 The Lord will repay(AW) him for the blood he shed,(AX) because without my father David knowing it he attacked two men and killed them with the sword. Both of them—Abner son of Ner, commander of Israel’s army, and Amasa(AY) son of Jether, commander of Judah’s army—were better(AZ) men and more upright than he. 33 May the guilt of their blood rest on the head of Joab and his descendants forever. But on David and his descendants, his house and his throne, may there be the Lord’s peace forever.”
34 So Benaiah(BA) son of Jehoiada went up and struck down Joab(BB) and killed him, and he was buried at his home out in the country. 35 The king put Benaiah(BC) son of Jehoiada over the army in Joab’s position and replaced Abiathar with Zadok(BD) the priest.
36 Then the king sent for Shimei(BE) and said to him, “Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and live there, but do not go anywhere else. 37 The day you leave and cross the Kidron Valley,(BF) you can be sure you will die; your blood will be on your own head.”(BG)
38 Shimei answered the king, “What you say is good. Your servant will do as my lord the king has said.” And Shimei stayed in Jerusalem for a long time.
39 But three years later, two of Shimei’s slaves ran off to Achish(BH) son of Maakah, king of Gath, and Shimei was told, “Your slaves are in Gath.” 40 At this, he saddled his donkey and went to Achish at Gath in search of his slaves. So Shimei went away and brought the slaves back from Gath.
41 When Solomon was told that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and had returned, 42 the king summoned Shimei and said to him, “Did I not make you swear by the Lord and warn(BI) you, ‘On the day you leave to go anywhere else, you can be sure you will die’? At that time you said to me, ‘What you say is good. I will obey.’ 43 Why then did you not keep your oath to the Lord and obey the command I gave you?”
44 The king also said to Shimei, “You know in your heart all the wrong(BJ) you did to my father David. Now the Lord will repay you for your wrongdoing. 45 But King Solomon will be blessed, and David’s throne will remain secure(BK) before the Lord forever.”
46 Then the king gave the order to Benaiah(BL) son of Jehoiada, and he went out and struck Shimei(BM) down and he died.
The kingdom was now established(BN) in Solomon’s hands.

大衛給所羅門的遺訓
2 大衛的死期近了，就囑咐他的兒子所羅門說： 2 “我現在要走世人必走的路了，你當堅強作大丈夫， 3 謹守耶和華你 神所吩咐的，遵行他的道，按摩西律法所寫的，謹守他的律例、誡命、典章和法度；這樣，無論你作甚麼，無論你往哪裡去，都可以亨通。 4 這樣，耶和華必堅立他所說有關我的話，說：‘如果你的子孫謹慎自己所行的，一心一意、誠誠實實行在我面前，就不斷有人坐以色列的王位了。’ 5 你也要知道洗魯雅的兒子約押對我所行的，就是對以色列的兩個元帥：尼珥的兒子押尼珥和益帖的兒子亞瑪撒所行的。他殺了他們，在和平的時候流他們的血，像作戰時一樣，把戰爭的血染在他腰間所束的帶子上和腳上所穿的鞋子上。 6 所以你要憑你的智慧而行，不要讓他白髮到老，平平安安下到陰間。 7 但是你要恩待基列人巴西萊的眾子，使他們與你同席吃飯，因為我逃避你哥哥押沙龍的時候，他們拿食物來迎接我。 8 與你在一起的有巴戶琳的便雅憫人基拉的兒子示每；我往瑪哈念去的那天，他用狠毒的咒語咒罵我。後來他下到約旦河來迎接我的時候，我就指著耶和華向他起誓，說：‘我必不用刀殺死你。’ 9 現在，你不要以他為無罪，你是個聰明人，你必知道該怎樣待他，使他白髮蒼蒼流血下到陰間。”
大衛逝世
10 大衛與他的列祖同睡，葬在大衛城裡。 11 大衛作以色列王四十年：在希伯崙作王七年；在耶路撒冷作王三十三年。 12 於是所羅門坐在他父親的王位上，他的國非常穩固。
亞多尼雅求娶亞比煞為妻
13 哈及的兒子亞多尼雅去見所羅門的母親拔示巴，拔示巴問他：“你來是為和平嗎？”他回答：“是為和平來的。” 14 他又說：“我有話對你說。”拔示巴說：“你說吧！” 15 亞多尼雅說：“你知道這國位原是我的，以色列眾人都希望我作王；不料國位反歸了我的弟弟，因為他得著國位是出於耶和華。 16 現在我有一事請求你，請你不要拒絕。”拔示巴對他說：“你說吧！” 17 他說：“求你向所羅門王說，請他把書念的女子亞比煞賜給我作妻子，因為他必不會拒絕你。” 18 拔示巴說：“好吧，我必為你向王請求。”
亞多尼雅自取滅亡
19 於是拔示巴去見所羅門王，為亞多尼雅的事向他請求。王起來迎接她，向她下拜，然後坐在自己的王座上，又吩咐人為王的母親擺設一個座位；她就坐在王的右邊。 20 拔示巴說：“我有一件小事求你，請不要拒絕我。”王對她說：“母親，你說吧，我必不會拒絕你。” 21 拔示巴說：“請把書念的女子亞比煞賜給你哥哥亞多尼雅作妻子。” 22 所羅門王回答他母親，說：“你為甚麼要為亞多尼雅求書念的女子亞比煞呢？你也可以為他求這個國位，因為他是我的哥哥，又有亞比亞他祭司和洗魯雅的兒子約押擁護他。” 23 於是所羅門王指著耶和華起誓，說：“如果亞多尼雅不因說了這話而送命，願 神懲罰我，並且加倍懲罰我。 24 現在，我指著永活的耶和華─那位堅立了我，使我坐在我父親大衛的王位上，又照他所應許，為我建立家室的─起誓，今天亞多尼雅必被處死！” 25 於是，所羅門王差派耶何耶大的兒子比拿雅去擊殺亞多尼雅，他就死了。
亞比亞他被革職
26 王對亞比亞他祭司說：“你回亞拿突自己的田地去吧！你本來是該死的，但我今天不殺死你，因為你在我父親大衛面前抬過主耶和華的約櫃，又與我父親同受一切苦難。” 27 所羅門就罷免了亞比亞他，不准他作耶和華的祭司，這樣就應驗了耶和華在示羅所說有關以利家的話。
約押被處死
28 約押雖然沒有擁護過押沙龍，但曾擁護亞多尼雅；這消息傳到約押那裡，他就逃到耶和華的帳幕裡去，抓緊祭壇的角。 29 有人告訴所羅門王約押逃到耶和華的帳幕裡去了，現在就在祭壇的旁邊。於是所羅門差派耶何耶大的兒子比拿雅去說：“你去把他殺死。” 30 比拿雅來到耶和華的帳幕那裡，對約押說：“王這樣吩咐說：‘你出來！’”約押說：“我不出去！我要死在這裡。”於是比拿雅回覆王說：“約押這樣說，他這樣回答我。” 31 王對比拿雅說：“你照著約押的話行吧！殺死他，把他埋葬，好叫約押所流無辜人的血，從我和我父的家除去。 32 耶和華必使約押流無辜人的血的罪歸到他自己頭上，因為他擊殺了兩個比他又公義又良善的人，就是用刀殺了以色列的元帥尼珥的兒子押尼珥，和猶大的元帥益帖的兒子亞瑪撒，這事我的父親大衛一點都不知道。 33 願流這二人的血的罪歸到約押和他後裔的頭上，直到永遠；但大衛和他的後裔，他的家和他的國卻要從耶和華那裡得享平安，直到永遠。” 34 於是耶何耶大的兒子比拿雅上去擊殺他，把他殺死，葬在曠野約押自己的家中。 35 王任命耶何耶大的兒子比拿雅取代約押統領軍隊；又任命撒督祭司取代亞比亞他的職位。
示每違命與死亡
36 王派人去把示每召來，對他說：“你要為自己在耶路撒冷建造一座房屋，住在那裡，不可從那裡出來到任何別的地方去。 37 你必須知道，你哪一天出來，越過汲淪溪，你哪一天就要死。你流人血的罪必歸到你自己的頭上。” 38 示每對王說：“這話很好，我主我王怎麼說，你僕人就照著行。”於是示每在耶路撒冷住了很久。
39 三年以後，示每的兩個僕人逃到迦特王瑪迦的兒子亞吉那裡。有人告訴示每說：“你的僕人在迦特。” 40 於是示每起來，預備好自己的騾子，就往迦特亞吉王那裡去尋找他的僕人。示每去了，又把他的僕人從迦特帶回來。 41 有人告訴所羅門示每離開耶路撒冷往迦特去，又回來了。 42 王就派人把示每召來，對他說：“我不是叫你指著耶和華起誓，並且警告你：‘你必須知道，你哪一天出去到任何別的地方，你哪一天就要死’嗎？你也對我說過：‘這話很好，我必聽從。’ 43 現在你為甚麼不遵守你向耶和華所起的誓，和我吩咐你的命令呢？” 44 王又對示每說：“你自己知道你心裡的一切惡事，就是你向我父親大衛所行的；現在耶和華要把你的罪歸到你的頭上。 45 所羅門王卻要蒙福，大衛的王位必在耶和華眼前得堅立，直到永遠。” 46 於是王命令耶何耶大的兒子比拿雅，比拿雅就出去擊殺示每，示每就死了。這樣，所羅門就鞏固了他的國。

Davids sista ord till Salomo
2 Då tiden närmade sig att David skulle dö, befallde han sin son Salomo och sade: 2 "Jag lämnar nu denna världen. Var stark och visa dig som en man. 3 Håll fast vid vad Herren, din Gud, befallt dig, så att du vandrar på hans vägar och håller hans stadgar, hans bud och föreskrifter och vittnesbörd, så som det är skrivet i Mose lag. Då får du framgång i allt vad du gör och överallt dit du vänder dig, 4 så att Herren kan uppfylla det ord som han talade om mig, då han sade: Om dina barn ger akt på sin väg, så att de vandrar inför mig i trohet av hela sitt hjärta och av hela sin själ, då skall det aldrig saknas en ättling till dig på Israels tron. 5 Du vet också vad Joab, Serujas son, har gjort mot mig, och vad han gjorde mot de två befälhavarna i Israel, Abner, Ners son, och Amasa, Jeters son. Han dödade dem och utgöt blod i fredstid, som om det hade varit krig, och lät blod komma på bältet som han hade omkring sina höfter och på skorna som han hade på sina fötter, som om det hade varit krig. 6 Gör efter din vishet och låt inte hans grå hår fara ner i dödsriket med frid.
7 Men mot gileaditen Barsillajs söner skall du visa godhet och låta dem vara med bland dem som äter vid ditt bord. För så gjorde de mot mig när jag flydde för din bror Absalom.
8 Vidare har du hos dig Simei, Geras son, benjaminiten från Bahurim. Han uttalade hemska förbannelser mot mig den dag då jag gick till Mahanajim men kom sedan ner till Jordan och mötte mig. Och jag gav honom min ed inför Herren och sade: Jag skall inte döda dig med svärd. 9 Men låt honom nu inte bli ostraffad. Du är ju en vis man och vet vad du bör göra med honom, så att du låter hans grå hår med blod fara ner i dödsriket."
David dör
10 David gick till vila hos sina fäder och blev begravd i Davids stad. 11 Den tid David regerade över Israel var fyrtio år.[a] I Hebron regerade han i sju år, och i Jerusalem regerade han i trettiotre år. 12 Och Salomo satt på sin fader Davids tron, och hans kungamakt blev starkt befäst.
Adonia dör
13 Adonia, Haggits son, gick till Salomos mor Bat-Seba. Hon frågade då: "Kommer du i fredliga avsikter?" Han svarade: "Ja. 14 Och jag har något att tala med dig om." Hon svarade: "Säg det." 15 Då sade han: "Du vet själv att kungadömet var mitt och att hela Israel hade fäst sina blickar på mig och väntade att jag skulle bli kung. Men kungadömet gick ifrån mig och över till min bror. Genom Herren har det blivit hans. 16 Nu har jag en enda bön till dig. Visa inte bort mig." Hon svarade: "Tala." 17 Då sade han: "Bed kung Salomo - dig visar han ju inte bort - att han ger mig Abisag från Sunem till hustru." 18 Bat-Seba svarade: "Nåväl, jag skall själv tala med kungen om dig."
19 Bat-Seba gick till kung Salomo för att tala med honom om Adonia. Då reste sig kungen och gick emot henne, bugade sig för henne och satte sig. Man ställde också fram en stol åt kungens mor och hon satte sig till höger om honom. 20 Därefter sade hon: "Jag har en enda liten bön till dig. Visa inte bort mig." Kungen svarade henne: "Moder, låt mig höra din bön. Jag skall inte visa bort dig." 21 Då sade hon: "Låt Adonia få Abisag från Sunem till hustru." 22 Men kung Salomo svarade sin mor: "Varför begär du bara Abisag från Sunem åt Adonia? Du kunde lika gärna begära kungadömet åt honom - han är ju min äldre bror - ja, åt honom och åt prästen Ebjatar och åt Joab, Serujas son." 23 Kung Salomo svor en ed inför Herren och sade: "Gud må straffa mig både nu och senare om inte Adonia med sitt liv skall få betala att han har sagt detta. 24 Och nu, så sant Herren lever, han som har utsett mig och satt mig på min fader Davids tron och som enligt sitt löfte har byggt ett hus åt mig: I dag skall Adonia dödas."
25 Och kung Salomo sände i väg Benaja, Jojadas son, som stötte ner Adonia, så att han dog.
Ebjatar och Joab straffas
26 Till prästen Ebjatar sade kungen: "Gå till dina ägor i Anatot. Du har förtjänat döden, men i dag skall jag inte döda dig. Du har ju burit Herren, Herrens ark framför min fader David och har lidit med min far allt det han fått lida." 27 Så drev Salomo bort Ebjatar och lät honom inte längre vara Herrens präst. Ty Herrens ord skulle fullbordas, det som han hade talat över Elis hus i Silo.
28 Ryktet om detta nådde Joab. Han hade anslutit sig till Adonia, men inte till Absalom. Han flydde till Herrens tält och fattade tag i hornen på altaret.
29 När kung Salomo fick höra att Joab hade flytt till Herrens tält och att han stod invid altaret, sände Salomo i väg Benaja, Jojadas son, och sade: "Gå och stöt ner honom!" 30 När Benaja kom till Herrens tält, sade han till honom: "Så säger kungen: Gå härifrån!" Men han svarade: "Nej, här vill jag dö."
Benaja framförde detta till kungen och sade: "Så har Joab sagt och så har han svarat mig." 31 Kungen sade då till honom: "Gör som han har sagt, stöt ner honom och begrav honom, så att du befriar mig och min fars hus från skulden för det oskyldiga blod Joab har utgjutit. 32 Herren skall låta hans blod komma tillbaka över hans eget huvud, därför att han stötte ner två män som var rättfärdigare och bättre än han själv. Han dödade dem med svärd, utan att min fader David visste det, nämligen Abner, Ners son, befälhavaren i Israel, och Amasa, Jeters son, befälhavaren i Juda. 33 Ja, deras blod skall komma tillbaka över Joabs och hans efterkommandes huvuden för evigt. Men åt David och hans efterkommande, hans hus och hans tron skall Herren ge frid till evig tid."
34 Benaja, Jojadas son, gick då dit upp och stötte ner Joab och dödade honom. Han blev begravd i öknen, där han bodde. 35 Kungen satte Benaja, Jojadas son, i hans ställe över hären, och prästen Sadok satte han i Ebjatars ställe.
Simei dör
36 Därefter sände kungen bud och kallade till sig Simei och sade till honom: "Bygg dig ett hus i Jerusalem och bo där. Du får inte gå därifrån, varken hit eller dit. 37 Ty det skall du veta, att den dag du går ut och går över bäcken Kidron måste du dö. Ditt blod kommer över ditt eget huvud." 38 Simei sade till kungen: "Det är bra. Så som min herre konungen har sagt, så skall din tjänare göra." Och Simei bodde i Jerusalem en lång tid.
39 Men tre år därefter hände sig att två av hans tjänare flydde till Akish, Maakas son, kungen i Gat. Man berättade det för Simei och sade: "Dina tjänare är i Gat." 40 Då stod Simei upp, sadlade sin åsna och for till Akish i Gat för att leta efter sina tjänare. Simei begav sig alltså av och hämtade sina tjänare från Gat. 41 Men när man berättade för Salomo att Simei hade begett sig från Jerusalem till Gat och kommit tillbaka, 42 sände kungen bud och kallade till sig Simei och sade till honom: "Har jag inte bundit dig med ed vid Herren, varnat dig och sagt: Det skall du veta att den dag du går ut och beger dig hit eller dit måste du dö? Du svarade mig: Det är bra, jag har hört det. 43 Varför har du då inte hållit eden inför Herren och lytt den befallning som jag har gett dig?" 44 Kungen sade vidare till Simei: "Du känner själv till allt det onda som ditt hjärta vet med sig att du har gjort mot min fader David. Herren skall låta din ondska komma tillbaka över ditt eget huvud. 45 Men kung Salomo skall bli välsignad, och Davids tron skall bli befäst inför Herren till evig tid."
46 På kungens befallning gick därefter Benaja, Jojadas son, fram och stötte ner honom, så att han dog. Och kungadömet blev befäst i Salomos hand.

2 I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;
3 And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:
4 That the Lord may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.
5 Moreover thou knowest also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner, and unto Amasa the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet.
6 Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoar head go down to the grave in peace.
7 But shew kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at thy table: for so they came to me when I fled because of Absalom thy brother.
8 And, behold, thou hast with thee Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, which cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim: but he came down to meet me at Jordan, and I sware to him by the Lord, saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword.
9 Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for thou art a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; but his hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood.
10 So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.
11 And the days that David reigned over Israel were forty years: seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem.
12 Then sat Solomon upon the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was established greatly.
13 And Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. And she said, Comest thou peaceably? And he said, Peaceably.
14 He said moreover, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And she said, Say on.
15 And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign: howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother's: for it was his from the Lord.
16 And now I ask one petition of thee, deny me not. And she said unto him, Say on.
17 And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say thee nay,) that he give me Abishag the Shunammite to wife.
18 And Bathsheba said, Well; I will speak for thee unto the king.
19 Bathsheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king's mother; and she sat on his right hand.
20 Then she said, I desire one small petition of thee; I pray thee, say me not nay. And the king said unto her, Ask on, my mother: for I will not say thee nay.
21 And she said, Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah thy brother to wife.
22 And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah.
23 Then king Solomon sware by the Lord, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life.
24 Now therefore, as the Lord liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.
25 And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him that he died.
26 And unto Abiathar the priest said the king, Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou art worthy of death: but I will not at this time put thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord God before David my father, and because thou hast been afflicted in all wherein my father was afflicted.
27 So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest unto the Lord; that he might fulfil the word of the Lord, which he spake concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.
28 Then tidings came to Joab: for Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he turned not after Absalom. And Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the Lord, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
29 And it was told king Solomon that Joab was fled unto the tabernacle of the Lord; and, behold, he is by the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go, fall upon him.
30 And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the Lord, and said unto him, Thus saith the king, Come forth. And he said, Nay; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me.
31 And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said, and fall upon him, and bury him; that thou mayest take away the innocent blood, which Joab shed, from me, and from the house of my father.
32 And the Lord shall return his blood upon his own head, who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing thereof, to wit, Abner the son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.
33 Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there be peace for ever from the Lord.
34 So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and fell upon him, and slew him: and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.
35 And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host: and Zadok the priest did the king put in the room of Abiathar.
36 And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Build thee an house in Jerusalem, and dwell there, and go not forth thence any whither.
37 For it shall be, that on the day thou goest out, and passest over the brook Kidron, thou shalt know for certain that thou shalt surely die: thy blood shall be upon thine own head.
38 And Shimei said unto the king, The saying is good: as my lord the king hath said, so will thy servant do. And Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days.
39 And it came to pass at the end of three years, that two of the servants of Shimei ran away unto Achish son of Maachah king of Gath. And they told Shimei, saying, Behold, thy servants be in Gath.
40 And Shimei arose, and saddled his ass, and went to Gath to Achish to seek his servants: and Shimei went, and brought his servants from Gath.
41 And it was told Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and was come again.
42 And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Did I not make thee to swear by the Lord, and protested unto thee, saying, Know for a certain, on the day thou goest out, and walkest abroad any whither, that thou shalt surely die? and thou saidst unto me, The word that I have heard is good.
43 Why then hast thou not kept the oath of the Lord, and the commandment that I have charged thee with?
44 The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the wickedness which thine heart is privy to, that thou didst to David my father: therefore the Lord shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head;
45 And king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the Lord for ever.
46 So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; which went out, and fell upon him, that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.
