The Lord Speaks to Elijah

⁹ There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, ^(A)the word of the Lord came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” ¹⁰ He said, “I have been very ^(B)jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, ^(C)thrown down your altars, and ^(D)killed your prophets with the sword, ^(E)and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” ¹¹ And he said, “Go out and ^(F)stand on the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and ^(G)a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind ^(H)an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. ¹² And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.^{[a] 13} And when Elijah heard it, ^(I)he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, ^(J)there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” ¹⁴ He said, ^(K)“I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, ^(L)thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” ¹⁵ And the Lord said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. ^16 (M)And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and ^(N)Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place. ¹⁷ And the one who escapes from ^(O)the sword of Hazael ^(P)shall Jehu put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu ^(Q)shall Elisha put to death. ^18 (R)Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not ^(S)kissed him.”

¹³ I think it right, as long as I am in this ^(A)body,^{[a] (B)}to stir you up by way of reminder, ^14 (C)since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, ^(D)as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. ¹⁵ And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.

Christ's Glory and the Prophetic Word

¹⁶ For we did not follow ^(E)cleverly devised ^(F)myths when we made known to you ^(G)the power and ^(H)coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but ^(I)we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. ¹⁷ For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, ^(J)“This is my beloved Son,^[b] with whom I am well pleased,” ¹⁸ we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on ^(K)the holy mountain. ¹⁹ And ^(L)we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention ^(M)as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until ^(N)the day ^(O)dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, ²⁰ knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. ²¹ For ^(P)no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God ^(Q)as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

9 And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not ^(A)taste death ^(B)until they see the kingdom of God after it has come ^(C)with power.”

The Transfiguration

^2 (D)And after six days Jesus took with him ^(E)Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was ^(F)transfigured before them, ³ and ^(G)his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one^[a] on earth could bleach them. ⁴ And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. ⁵ And Peter said to Jesus, ^(H)“Rabbi,^[b] it is good that we are here. Let us make three ^(I)tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” ⁶ For ^(J)he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. ⁷ And ^(K)a cloud overshadowed them, and ^(L)a voice came out of the cloud, ^(M)“This is my beloved Son;^{[c] (N)}listen to him.” ⁸ And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.

^9 (O)And as they were coming down the mountain, ^(P)he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, ^(Q)until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
