Elijah’s Message to Ahab
18 After many days the word of the Lord came to Eli′jah, in the third year, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.” 2 So Eli′jah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samar′ia. 3 And Ahab called Obadi′ah, who was over the household. (Now Obadi′ah revered the Lord greatly; 4 and when Jez′ebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, Obadi′ah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.) 5 And Ahab said to Obadi′ah, “Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the valleys; perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, and not lose some of the animals.” 6 So they divided the land between them to pass through it; Ahab went in one direction by himself, and Obadi′ah went in another direction by himself.
7 And as Obadi′ah was on the way, behold, Eli′jah met him; and Obadi′ah recognized him, and fell on his face, and said, “Is it you, my lord Eli′jah?” 8 And he answered him, “It is I. Go, tell your lord, ‘Behold, Eli′jah is here.’” 9 And he said, “Wherein have I sinned, that you would give your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me? 10 As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom whither my lord has not sent to seek you; and when they would say, ‘He is not here,’ he would take an oath of the kingdom or nation, that they had not found you. 11 And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Eli′jah is here.”’ 12 And as soon as I have gone from you, the Spirit of the Lord will carry you whither I know not; and so, when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me, although I your servant have revered the Lord from my youth. 13 Has it not been told my lord what I did when Jez′ebel killed the prophets of the Lord, how I hid a hundred men of the Lord’s prophets by fifties in a cave, and fed them with bread and water? 14 And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Eli′jah is here”’; and he will kill me.” 15 And Eli′jah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.” 16 So Obadi′ah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Eli′jah.
17 When Ahab saw Eli′jah, Ahab said to him, “Is it you, you troubler of Israel?” 18 And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel; but you have, and your father’s house, because you have forsaken the commandments of the Lord and followed the Ba′als. 19 Now therefore send and gather all Israel to me at Mount Carmel, and the four hundred and fifty prophets of Ba′al and the four hundred prophets of Ashe′rah, who eat at Jez′ebel’s table.”
Elijah’s Triumph over the Priests of Baal
20 So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel, and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel. 21 And Eli′jah came near to all the people, and said, “How long will you go limping with two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Ba′al, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word. 22 Then Eli′jah said to the people, “I, even I only, am left a prophet of the Lord; but Ba′al’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men. 23 Let two bulls be given to us; and let them choose one bull for themselves, and cut it in pieces and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it; and I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood, and put no fire to it. 24 And you call on the name of your god and I will call on the name of the Lord; and the God who answers by fire, he is God.” And all the people answered, “It is well spoken.” 25 Then Eli′jah said to the prophets of Ba′al, “Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire to it.” 26 And they took the bull which was given them, and they prepared it, and called on the name of Ba′al from morning until noon, saying, “O Ba′al, answer us!” But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped about the altar which they had made. 27 And at noon Eli′jah mocked them, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god; either he is musing, or he has gone aside, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.” 28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them. 29 And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice; no one answered, no one heeded.
30 Then Eli′jah said to all the people, “Come near to me”; and all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that had been thrown down; 31 Eli′jah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, “Israel shall be your name”; 32 and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord. And he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed. 33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, “Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering, and on the wood.” 34 And he said, “Do it a second time”; and they did it a second time. And he said, “Do it a third time”; and they did it a third time. 35 And the water ran round about the altar, and filled the trench also with water.
36 And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Eli′jah the prophet came near and said, “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. 37 Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that thou, O Lord, art God, and that thou hast turned their hearts back.” 38 Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The Lord, he is God; the Lord, he is God.” 40 And Eli′jah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Ba′al; let not one of them escape.” And they seized them; and Eli′jah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and killed them there.
The Drought Ends
41 And Eli′jah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of the rushing of rain.” 42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Eli′jah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees. 43 And he said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” And he went up and looked, and said, “There is nothing.” And he said, “Go again seven times.” 44 And at the seventh time he said, “Behold, a little cloud like a man’s hand is rising out of the sea.” And he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.’” 45 And in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel. 46 And the hand of the Lord was on Eli′jah; and he girded up his loins and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

18 Después de un largo tiempo, en el tercer año, la palabra del Señor vino a Elías y le dio este mensaje: «Ve y preséntate ante Acab, y yo voy a enviar lluvia sobre la tierra». 2 Así que Elías se puso en camino para presentarse ante Acab.
En Samaria había mucha hambre. 3 Por lo tanto, Acab mandó llamar a Abdías, quien administraba su palacio y veneraba al Señor. 4 Como Jezabel estaba acabando con los profetas del Señor, Abdías había tomado a cien de ellos y los había escondido en dos cuevas, cincuenta en cada una, y les había dado de comer y de beber. 5 Acab instruyó a Abdías: «Recorre todo el país en busca de fuentes y ríos. Tal vez encontremos pasto para mantener vivos los caballos y las mulas, y no perdamos nuestras bestias». 6 Así que se dividieron la tierra que iban a recorrer: Acab se fue en una dirección y Abdías, en la otra.
7 Abdías iba por su camino cuando Elías le salió al encuentro. Al reconocerlo, Abdías se postró rostro en tierra y le preguntó:
―Mi señor Elías, ¿de veras eres tú?
8 ―Sí, soy yo —le respondió—. Ve a decirle a tu amo que aquí estoy.
9 ―¿Qué mal ha hecho este tu siervo —preguntó Abdías—, para que me entregues a Acab y él me mate? 10 Tan cierto como que vive el Señor tu Dios, que no hay nación ni reino adonde mi amo no haya mandado a buscarte. Y a quienes afirmaban que no estabas allí, él los hacía jurar que no te habían encontrado. 11 ¿Y ahora tú me ordenas que vaya a mi amo y le diga que tú estás aquí? 12 ¡Qué sé yo a dónde te va a llevar el Espíritu del Señor cuando nos separemos! Si voy y le digo a Acab que tú estás aquí, y luego él no te encuentra, ¡me matará! Ten en cuenta que yo, tu siervo, he sido fiel al Señor desde mi juventud. 13 ¿No le han contado a mi señor lo que hice cuando Jezabel estaba matando a los profetas del Señor? ¡Pues escondí a cien de los profetas del Señor en dos cuevas, cincuenta en cada una, y les di de comer y de beber! 14 ¡Y ahora tú me ordenas que vaya a mi amo y le diga que estás aquí! ¡De seguro me matará!
15 Elías le respondió:
―Tan cierto como que vive el Señor Todopoderoso, a quien sirvo, te aseguro que hoy me presentaré ante Acab.
Elías en el monte Carmelo
16 Abdías fue a buscar a Acab y le informó de lo sucedido, así que este fue al encuentro de Elías 17 y, cuando lo vio, le preguntó:
―¿Eres tú el que le está creando problemas a Israel?
18 ―No soy yo quien le está creando problemas a Israel —respondió Elías—. Quienes se los crean sois tú y tu familia, porque habéis abandonado los mandamientos del Señor y os habéis ido tras los baales. 19 Ahora convoca de todas partes al pueblo de Israel, para que se reúna conmigo en el monte Carmelo con los cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas de Baal y los cuatrocientos profetas de la diosa Aserá que se sientan a la mesa de Jezabel.
20 Acab convocó en el monte Carmelo a todos los israelitas y a los profetas. 21 Elías se presentó ante el pueblo y dijo:
―¿Hasta cuándo vais a seguir indecisos?[a] Si el Dios verdadero es el Señor, debéis seguirlo; pero, si es Baal, seguidle a él.
El pueblo no dijo una sola palabra. 22 Entonces Elías añadió:
―Yo soy el único que ha quedado de los profetas del Señor; en cambio, Baal cuenta con cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas. 23 Traednos dos bueyes. Que escojan ellos uno, lo descuarticen y pongan los pedazos sobre la leña, pero sin prenderle fuego. Yo prepararé el otro buey y lo pondré sobre la leña, pero tampoco le prenderé fuego. 24 Entonces invocaréis vosotros el nombre de vuestro dios, y yo invocaré el nombre del Señor. ¡El que responda con fuego, ese es el Dios verdadero!
Y todo el pueblo estuvo de acuerdo.
25 Entonces Elías les dijo a los profetas de Baal:
―Ya que vosotros sois tantos, escoged uno de los bueyes y preparadlo primero. Invocad luego el nombre de vuestro dios, pero no prendáis fuego.
26 Los profetas de Baal tomaron el buey que les dieron y lo prepararon, e invocaron el nombre de su dios desde la mañana hasta el mediodía.
―¡Baal, respóndenos! —gritaban, mientras daban brincos alrededor del altar que habían hecho.
Pero no se escuchó nada, pues nadie respondió. 27 Al mediodía Elías comenzó a burlarse de ellos:
―¡Gritad más fuerte! —les decía—. Seguro que es un dios, pero tal vez esté meditando, o esté ocupado o de viaje. ¡A lo mejor se ha quedado dormido y hay que despertarlo!
28 Comenzaron entonces a gritar más fuerte y, como era su costumbre, se cortaron con cuchillos y dagas hasta quedar bañados en sangre. 29 Pasó el mediodía, y siguieron en este trance profético hasta la hora del sacrificio vespertino. Pero no se escuchó nada, pues nadie respondió ni prestó atención.
30 Entonces Elías le dijo a la gente:
―¡Acercaos!
Así lo hicieron. Como habían dejado en ruinas el altar del Señor, Elías lo reparó. 31 Luego recogió doce piedras, una por cada tribu descendiente de Jacob, a quien el Señor le había puesto por nombre Israel. 32 Con las piedras construyó un altar en honor del Señor, y alrededor cavó una zanja en la que cabían quince litros[b] de cereal. 33 Colocó la leña, descuartizó el buey, puso los pedazos sobre la leña 34 y dijo:
―Llenad de agua cuatro cántaros, y vaciadlos sobre el holocausto y la leña.
Luego dijo:
―Volved a hacerlo.
Y así lo hicieron.
―¡Hacedlo una vez más! —les ordenó.
Y por tercera vez vaciaron los cántaros. 35 El agua corría alrededor del altar hasta llenar la zanja.
36 A la hora del sacrificio vespertino, el profeta Elías dio un paso adelante y oró así: «Señor, Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Israel, que todos sepan hoy que tú eres Dios en Israel, y que yo soy tu siervo y he hecho todo esto en obediencia a tu palabra. 37 ¡Respóndeme, Señor, respóndeme, para que esta gente reconozca que tú, Señor, eres Dios, y que estás convirtiéndoles el corazón a ti!»
38 En ese momento cayó el fuego del Señor y quemó el holocausto, la leña, las piedras y el suelo, y hasta lamió el agua de la zanja. 39 Cuando vieron esto, todos se postraron y exclamaron: «¡El Señor es Dios! ¡El Señor es Dios!»
40 Luego Elías les ordenó:
―¡Prended a los profetas de Baal! ¡Que no escape ninguno!
Tan pronto como los prendieron, Elías hizo que los bajaran al arroyo Quisón, y allí los ejecutó. 41 Entonces Elías le dijo a Acab:
―Anda a tu casa, y come y bebe, porque ya se oye el ruido de un fuerte aguacero.
42 Acab se fue a comer y beber, pero Elías subió a la cumbre del Carmelo, se inclinó hasta el suelo y puso el rostro entre las rodillas.
43 ―Ve y mira hacia el mar —le ordenó a su criado.
El criado fue y miró, y dijo:
―No se ve nada.
Siete veces le ordenó Elías que fuera a ver, 44 y la séptima vez el criado le informó:
―Desde el mar viene subiendo una nube. Es tan pequeña como una mano.
Entonces Elías le ordenó:
―Ve y dile a Acab: “Engancha el carro y vete antes de que la lluvia te detenga”.
45 Las nubes fueron oscureciendo el cielo; luego se levantó el viento y se desató una fuerte lluvia. Y Acab se fue en su carro hacia Jezrel. 46 Entonces el poder del Señor vino sobre Elías, quien se ajustó el manto con el cinturón, se echó a correr y llegó a Jezrel antes que Acab.

18 Molto tempo dopo, durante il terzo anno, la parola dell'Eterno fu indirizzata ad Elia, dicendo: «Va' presentati ad Achab e io manderò la pioggia sul paese».
2 Elia andò a presentarsi ad Achab. Ora in Samaria c'era una grande carestia
3 Achab mandò a chiamare Abdia che era il suo maggiordomo. (Abdia temeva grandemente l'Eterno;
4 così, quando Jezebel sterminava i profeti dell'Eterno, Abdia prese cento profeti e li nascose cinquanta in una caverna e provvide loro pane e acqua).
5 Achab disse ad Abdia: «Va' attraverso il paese verso tutte le sorgenti e tutti i corsi d'acqua; forse troveremo erba sufficiente per poter conservare in vita i cavalli e i muli e non dovremo uccidere nessuno dei nostri animali».
6 Così si divisero il paese da percorrere Achab se ne andò da solo da una parte e Abdia da solo da un'altra parte.
7 Mentre Abdia era in viaggio, ecco venirgli incontro Elia; Abdia lo riconobbe e si prostrò con la faccia a terra, dicendo: «Sei tu il mio signore Elia?».
8 Gli rispose: «Sono io; va' a dire al tuo signore: C'è qui Elia».
9 Ma Abdia rispose: «Che peccato ho fatto perché tu consegni il tuo servo nelle mani di Achab per farmi morire?
10 Com'è vero che l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, vive, non c'è nazione e regno in cui il mio signore non abbia mandato a cercarti; e quando dicevano: "Non è qui", facevo giurare il regno e la nazione che non avevano potuto trovarti.
11 E ora tu dici: "Va' a dire al tuo signore: C'è qui Elia!".
12 Ma avverrà che, appena mi sarò allontanato da te, lo Spirito dell'Eterno ti trasporterà in un luogo a me sconosciuto; cosí io andrò a riferirlo ad Achab, ed egli, non trovandoti, mi ucciderà. Eppure il tuo servo teme l'Eterno fin dalla sua giovinezza!
13 Non hanno riferito al mio signore ciò che io feci quando Jezebel uccideva i profeti dell'Eterno? Come io nascosi cento di quei profeti dell'Eterno, cinquanta in una caverna e cinquanta in un'altra e provvidi loro pane e acqua?
14 E ora tu dici: "Va' a dire al tuo signore: C'è qui Elia!". Ma egli mi ucciderà».
15 Allora Elia rispose: «Com'è vero che vive l'Eterno degli eserciti alla cui presenza io sto, oggi mi presenterò ad Achab».
16 Abdia dunque andò a trovare Achab e gli riferí la cosa; e Achab andò incontro ad Elia.
17 Con appena Achab vide Elia, gli disse: «Sei proprio tu che metti sossopra Israele?».
18 Elia rispose: «Non sono io che metto sossopra Israele, ma tu e la casa di tuo padre, perché avete abbandonato i comandamenti dell'Eterno e tu sei andato dietro ai Baal.
19 Perciò ora manda a chiamare tutto Israele presso di me sul monte Karmel, insieme ai quattrocentocinquanta profeti di Baal e ai quattrocento profeti di Ascerah che mangiano alla mensa di Jezebel».
20 Cosí Achab mandò a chiamare tutti i figli d'Israele e radunò i profeti sul monte Karmel.
21 Allora Elia si avvicinò a tutto il popolo e disse: «Fino a quando tentennerete fra due opinioni? Se l'Eterno è DIO, seguitelo; ma se invece lo è Baal, seguite lui». Il popolo non rispose parola.
22 Allora Elia disse al popolo: «Sono rimasto io solo dei profeti dell'Eterno, mentre i profeti di Baal sono in quattrocentocinquanta.
23 Ci siano dunque dati due torelli; essi scelgano un torello per loro lo facciano a pezzi e lo mettano sulla legna senza appiccarvi il fuoco; io preparerò l'altro torello e lo metterò sulla legna senza appiccarvi il fuoco.
24 Voi invocherete quindi il nome del vostro dio e io invocherò il nome dell'Eterno; il dio che risponderà mediante il fuoco è DIO». Tutto il popolo rispose e disse: «Ben detto!».
25 Allora Elia disse ai profeti di Baal: «Sceglietevi un torello e preparatelo per primi, perché siete i piú numerosi; poi invocate il vostro dio, ma senza appiccare il fuoco».
26 Cosí essi presero il torello che fu dato loro e lo prepararono; poi invocarono il nome di Baal dal mattino fino a mezzogiorno, dicendo: «O Baal, rispondici!». Ma non si udí alcuna voce e nessuno rispose; intanto essi saltavano intorno all'altare che avevano fatto.
27 A mezzogiorno Elia incominciò a beffarsi di loro e a dire: «Gridate piú forte perché egli è dio; forse sta meditando o è indaffarato o è in viaggio, o magari si è addormentato e dev'essere svegliato».
28 Cosí essi si misero a gridare piú forte e a farsi incisioni con spade e lance secondo le loro usanze finché grondavano sangue.
29 Passato mezzogiorno, essi profetizzarono fino al tempo di offrire l'oblazione; ma non si udí alcuna voce nessuno rispose e nessuno diede loro retta.
30 Allora Ella disse a tutto il popolo: «Avvicinatevi a me!». Cosí tutto il popolo si avvicinò a lui, ed egli restaurò l'altare dell'Eterno che era stato demolito.
31 Poi Elia prese dodici pietre, secondo il numero delle tribú dei figli di Giacobbe al quale l'Eterno aveva detto: «Il tuo nome sarà Israele».
32 Con le pietre edificò un altare al nome dell'Eterno e fece intorno all'altare un fosso della capacità di due misure di grano.
33 Poi vi sistemò la legna, fece a pezzi il torello e lo pose sopra la legna. E disse: «Riempite quattro brocche d'acqua e versatela sull'olocausto e sulla legna».
34 Di nuovo disse: «Fatelo una seconda volta». Ed essi lo fecero una seconda volta. Egli disse ancora: «Fatelo per la terza volta». Ed essi lo fecero per la terza volta.
35 L'acqua scorreva attorno all'altare ed egli riempí d'acqua anche il fosso.
36 All'ora in cui si offriva l'oblazione, il profeta Elia si avvicinò e disse: «O Eterno DIO di Abrahamo d'Isacco e d'Israele, fa' che oggi si sappia che tu sei DIO in Israele, che io sono tuo servo e che ho fatto tutte queste cose per tuo comando.
37 Rispondimi, o Eterno, rispondimi, affinché questo popolo riconosca che tu, o Eterno, sei DIO, e che hai fatto ritornare i loro cuori a te».
38 Allora cadde il fuoco dell'Eterno e consumò l'olocausto, la legna, le pietre e la polvere, e prosciugò l'acqua che era nel fosso.
39 A tale vista, tutto il popolo si gettò con la faccia a terra e disse: «L'Eterno è DIO! L'Eterno è DIO!».
40 Quindi Elia disse loro: «Prendete i profeti di Baal; non lasciatene scappare neppure uno!». Cosí essi li presero ed Elia li fece scendere al torrente Kishon, dove li scannò.
41 Poi Elia disse ad Achab: «Risali, mangia e bevi, perché si ode già il rumore di grande pioggia».
42 Cosí Achab risalí per mangiare e bere; ma Elia salí in vetta al Karmel si piegò fino a terra e si mise la faccia tra le ginocchia,
43 e disse al suo servo: «Ora sali e guarda dalla parte del mare!». Egli salí, guardò e disse: «Non c'è niente». Elia gli disse: «Ritorna a vedere, per sette volte».
44 La settima volta, il servo disse: «C'è una nuvoletta grossa come la palma di una mano, che sale dal mare». Allora Elia disse: «Sali e di' ad Achab: "Attacca i cavalli al carro e scendi prima che la pioggia ti sorprenda"».
45 In breve tempo il cielo si oscurò a motivo delle nuvole e del vento e cadde una grande pioggia. Cosí Achab salí sul carro e andò a Jezreel
46 La mano dell'Eterno fu sopra Elia, che si cinse i lombi e corse davanti ad Achab fino all'ingresso di Jezreel.
