18 After many days the word of the Lord came to Elias, in the third year, saying: Go and shew thyself to Achab, that I may give rain upon the face of the earth.
2 And Elias went to shew himself to Achab, and there was a grievous famine in Samaria.
3 And Achab called Abdias the governor of his house: now Abdias feared the Lord very much.
4 For when Jezabel killed the prophets of the Lord, he took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifty and fifty in caves, and fed them with bread and water.
5 And Achab said to Abdias: Go into the land unto all fountains of waters, and into all valleys, to see if we can find grass, and save the horses and mules, that the beasts may not utterly perish.
6 And they divided the countries between them, that they might go round about them: Achab went one way, and Abdias another way by himself.
7 And as Abdias was in the way, Elias met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said: Art thou my lord Elias?
8 And he answered: I am. Go, and tell thy master: Elias is here.
9 And he said: What have I sinned, that thou wouldst deliver me thy servant into the hand of Achab, that he should kill me?
10 As the Lord thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when all answered: He is not here: he took an oath of every kingdom and nation, because thou wast not found.
11 And now thou sayest to me: Go, and tell thy master: Elias is here.
12 And when I am gone from thee, the spirit of the Lord will carry thee into a place that I know not: and I shall go in and tell Achab, and he not finding thee, will kill me: but thy servant feareth the Lord from his infancy.
13 Hath it not been told thee, my lord, what I did when Jezabel killed the prophets of the Lord, how I hid a hundred men of the prophets of the Lord, by fifty and fifty in caves, and fed them with bread and water?
14 And now thou sayest: Go, and tell thy master: Elias is here: that he may kill me.
15 And Elias said: As the Lord of hosts liveth, before whose face I stand, this day I will shew myself unto him.
16 Abdias therefore went to meet Achab, and told him: and Achab came to meet Elias.
17 And when he had seen him, he said: Art thou he that troublest Israel?
18 And he said: I have not troubled Israel, but thou and thy father's house, who have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and have followed Baalim.
19 Nevertheless send now, and gather unto me all Israel, unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, who eat at Jezabel's table.
20 Achab sent to all the children of Israel, and gathered together the prophets unto mount Carmel.
21 And Elias coming to all the people, said: How long do you halt between two sides? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people did not answer him a word.
22 And Elias said again to the people: I only remain a prophet of the Lord: but the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty men.
23 Let two bullocks be given us, and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces and lay it upon wood, but put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under it.
24 Call ye on the names of your gods, and I will call on the name of my Lord: and the God that shall answer by fire, let him be God. And all the people answering said: A very good proposal.
25 Then Elias said to the prophets of Baal: Choose you one bullock and dress it first, because you are many: and call on the names of your gods, but put no fire under.
26 And they took the bullock which he gave them, and dressed it: and they called on the name of Baal from morning even till noon, saying: O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered: and they leaped over the altar that they had made.
27 And when it was now noon, Elias jested at them, saying: Cry with a louder voice: for he is a God, and perhaps he is talking, or is in an inn, or on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep, and must be awaked.
28 So they cried with a loud voice, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till they were all covered with blood.
29 And after midday was past, and while they were prophesying, the time was come of offering sacrifice, and there was no voice heard, nor did any one answer, nor regard them as they prayed:
30 Elias said to all the people: Come ye unto me. And the people coming near unto him, he repaired the altar of the Lord, that was broken down:
31 And he took twelve stones according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying: Israel shall be thy name.
32 And he built with the stones an altar to the name of the Lord: and he made a trench for water, of the breadth of two furrows round about the altar.
33 And he laid the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid it upon the wood.
34 And he said: Fill four buckets with water, and pour it upon the burnt offering, and upon the wood. And again he said: Do the same the second time. And when they had done it the second time, he said: Do the same also the third time. And they did so the third time.
35 And the water run round about the altar, and the trench was filled with water.
36 And when it was now time to offer the holocaust, Elias the prophet came near and said: O Lord God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Israel, shew this day that thou art the God of Israel, and I thy servant, and that according to thy commandment I have done all these things.
37 Hear me, O Lord, hear me: that this people may learn, that thou art the Lord God, and that thou hast turned their heart again.
38 Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the holocaust, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
39 And when all the people saw this, they fell on their faces, and they said: The Lord he is God, the Lord he is God.
40 And Elias said to them: Take the prophets of Baal, and let not one of them escape. And when they had taken them, Elias brought them down to the torrent Cison, and killed them there.
41 And Elias said to Achab: Go up, eat, and drink: for there is a sound of abundance of rain.
42 Achab went up to eat and drink: and Elias went up to the top of Carmel, and casting himself down upon the earth put his face between his knees,
43 And he said to his servant: Go up, and look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said: There is nothing. And again he said to him: Return seven times.
44 And at the seventh time, behold, a little cloud arose out of the sea like a man's foot. And he said: Go up and say to Achab: Prepare thy chariot and go down, lest the rain prevent thee.
45 And while he turned himself this way and that way, behold the heavens grew dark, with clouds, and wind, and there fell a great rain. And Achab getting up went away to Jezrahel:
46 And the hand of the Lord was upon Elias, and he girded up his loins and ran before Achab, till he came to Jezrahel.

Elia tillrättavisar kung Achav
18 Efter en lång tid, på tredje året, kom Herrens ord till Elia: ”Gå och träd fram inför kung Achav. Jag ska snart låta det regna över landet.”
2 Elia gav sig iväg för att träda fram inför kungen.
Under tiden hade hungersnöden blivit mycket svår i Samaria.
3 Achav kallade till sig Obadja, som hade hand om Achavs egendom, en man som hyste stor fruktan för Herren. 4 En gång, när Isebel höll på att döda Herrens profeter, hade Obadja gömt hundra av dem i två grottor, femtio i varje, och försett dem med mat och vatten.
5 Kung Achav hade sagt till Obadja: ”Gå genom landet och sök efter källor och vattendrag för att hitta gräs, så att vi kanske kan hålla hästar och mulåsnor vid liv och slipper slakta boskap.”
6 De delade upp landet mellan sig och gav sig av, Achav åt ett håll och Obadja åt ett annat. 7 Plötsligt fick Obadja på sin väg se Elia komma gående, och så snart han kände igen honom, föll han ner för honom. ”Är det verkligen du, min herre Elia?” frågade han. 8 ”Ja, det är det”, svarade Elia. ”Gå och tala om för din herre: Elia är här.”
9 Men Obadja svarade: ”Vad har jag gjort för ont, eftersom du vill överlämna mig åt Achav och sända mig i döden? 10 Ja, så sant Herren, din Gud, lever, det finns inget folk eller kungarike där min herre inte låtit söka efter dig. Och när man svarade att du inte var där, tvingade han dessa kungariken och folk att svära på att de inte kunnat finna dig. 11 Och nu säger du att jag ska gå och tala om för min herre: ’Elia är här!’ 12 Men så snart jag har gått härifrån, så för nog Herrens Ande bort dig, jag vet inte vart, och när jag sedan talar om detta för Achav och han inte finner dig, dödar han mig. Ändå har jag, din tjänare, fruktat Herren alltsedan min ungdom. 13 Har ingen talat om för dig, min herre, vad jag gjorde när Isebel höll på att döda Herrensprofeter, hur jag då gömde hundra av dem i två grottor och gav dem mat och vatten? 14 Och nu vill du att jag ska gå och tala om för kungen: ’Elia är här!’ Då är jag dödens!”
15 ”Så sant härskarornas Herre lever, han som jag tjänar, i dag ska jag personligen infinna mig hos Achav”, svarade Elia.
Elia utmanar baalsprofeterna
16 Obadja gick då och berättade det för Achav, och Achav gick ut för att möta honom.
17 ”Jaså, där är du, du som dragit denna olycka över Israel”, sa Achav när han fick se Elia. 18 ”Det är inte jag som drar olycka över Israel”, svarade Elia. ”Du och din familj har förkastat Herrens bud och följt baalsgudarna. 19 Samla nu allt folk i Israel hos mig på berget Karmel, tillsammans med Baals fyrahundrafemtio profeter och Asheras fyrahundra profeter, som Isebel försörjer.”
20 Achav meddelade då hela Israel och sammankallade alla profeterna på berget Karmel.
21 Där stod Elia upp och talade till hela folket: ”Hur länge ska ni fortsätta att vingla mellan olika åsikter? Om Herren är Gud, följ då honom! Men om Baal är det, ska ni naturligtvis följa honom!” Men de gav honom inget svar.
22 ”Jag är den ende av Herrens profeter som finns kvar, men Baal har fyrahundrafemtio profeter”, fortsatte Elia. 23 ”Skaffa nu fram åt oss två tjurar. De får välja en av dem åt sig, stycka den och lägga den på veden, men utan att tända eld. Jag ska göra i ordning den andra tjuren och lägga den på veden, utan att tända eld. 24 Sedan ska ni ropa till er gud, och jag ska ropa till Herren, min Gud, och den som svarar med eld är Gud.”
Allt folket gick med på Elias förslag.
25 Då vände sig Elia till Baals profeter: ”Välj en av tjurarna och gör den i ordning, för ni är många. Anropa sedan er gud, men tänd ingen eld.”
26 De gjorde i ordning en av tjurarna som man gav dem. De ropade sedan hela förmiddagen på Baal: ”Baal, svara oss!” Men de fick inget svar, och då började de hoppa runt altaret[a] som de hade gjort.
27 Vid middagstid började Elia driva med dem. ”Ropa högre! Förvisso är han gud, men kanske är han upptagen med annat i sina tankar[b], eller också är han ute och reser! Han kanske rentav ligger och sover, så att ni måste väcka honom!”
28 Då ropade de ännu högre, och, som deras sed var, skar de sig med svärd och spjut så att det blödde. 29 De höll på med sitt profetiska raseri hela eftermiddagen ända tills det var hög tid för kvällsoffret, men ingen svarade dem, ingen röst hördes och ingen verkade bry sig om vad de gjorde.
30 ”Kom nu hit till mig”, sa Elia då till allt folket. De kom till honom, och han byggde upp Herrens altare som hade rivits ner. 31 Han tog tolv stenar, en för var och en av Jakobs söners stammar, hans, till vilken Herren hade sagt: ”Ditt namn ska vara Israel.” 32 Av dem byggde han ett altare åt Herren. Han grävde därefter ett dike runt om det, som rymde två sädesmått[c]. 33 Sedan lade han upp veden, styckade tjuren och placerade den på veden.
34 ”Fyll fyra hinkar med vatten och häll det över brännoffret och veden”, befallde Elia. När de hade gjort det, bad han dem att göra det en gång till. Sedan befallde han: ”Gör det en tredje gång.” När de för tredje gången gjorde som han sa 35 rann vattnet ner över altaret och fyllde diket.
36 När det var dags för kvällsoffret, gick Elia fram och bad: ”Herre, Abrahams, Isaks och Israels Gud, låt det i dag bli känt att du är Gud i Israel och att jag är din tjänare, som har gjort allt detta på din befallning! 37 Herre, svara mig, svara mig, så att detta folk förstår att du är Gud och att du vill vända deras hjärtan tillbaka till dig!”
38 Då kom en eld ner från Herren som brände upp offret, veden, stenarna och jorden och till och med torkade upp allt vattnet i diket.
39 När folket såg vad som hände, föll de ner med sina ansikten mot marken och ropade: ”Herren är Gud! Herren är Gud!”
40 Då sa Elia åt dem att ta Baals profeter till fånga. ”Låt inte en enda av dem komma undan”, befallde han.
De grep dem allesammans, och Elia såg till att de fördes ner till bäcken Kishon och dödades där.
Elia ber om regn
41 Sedan sa Elia till Achav: ”Gå nu och ät och drick! Jag hör nämligen ett häftigt regn komma.”
42 Achav gick för att äta och dricka. Men Elia gick upp på toppen av berget Karmel och böjde sig ner mot marken med huvudet mellan sina knän 43 och sa till sin tjänare: ”Gå och se ut över havet!”
Han gjorde så och kom tillbaka till Elia och sa: ”Där syns ingenting.” Sju gånger fick han samma order av Elia: ”Gå tillbaka!”
44 När han återvände för sjunde gången, berättade han att han hade sett ett litet moln komma upp över havet, men det var inte större än en manshand.
”Gå och säg till Achav att han tar sin vagn och ger sig iväg genast, annars kommer regnet att hindra honom”, sa Elia.
45 Snart förmörkades himlen av moln, det började blåsa, och det blev ett häftigt skyfall. Achav gav sig av till Jisreel, 46 och Herrens kraft kom över Elia, och, med manteln uppfäst runt midjan, sprang han framför Achavs vagn ända till Jisreel.

Elijah and Obadiah
18 After a long time, in the third(A) year, the word of the Lord came to Elijah: “Go and present(B) yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain(C) on the land.” 2 So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab.
Now the famine was severe(D) in Samaria, 3 and Ahab had summoned Obadiah, his palace administrator.(E) (Obadiah was a devout believer(F) in the Lord. 4 While Jezebel(G) was killing off the Lord’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden(H) them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied(I) them with food and water.) 5 Ahab had said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs(J) and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals.”(K) 6 So they divided the land they were to cover, Ahab going in one direction and Obadiah in another.
7 As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized(L) him, bowed down to the ground, and said, “Is it really you, my lord Elijah?”
8 “Yes,” he replied. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here.’”
9 “What have I done wrong,” asked Obadiah, “that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death? 10 As surely as the Lord your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look(M) for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you. 11 But now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ 12 I don’t know where the Spirit(N) of the Lord may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshiped the Lord since my youth. 13 Haven’t you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord? I hid a hundred of the Lord’s prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water. 14 And now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ He will kill me!”
15 Elijah said, “As the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present(O) myself to Ahab today.”
Elijah on Mount Carmel
16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler(P) of Israel?”
18 “I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you(Q) and your father’s family have. You have abandoned(R) the Lord’s commands and have followed the Baals. 19 Now summon(S) the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel.(T) And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”(U)
20 So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.(V) 21 Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver(W) between two opinions? If the Lord(X) is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”
But the people said nothing.
22 Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left,(Y) but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.(Z) 23 Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. 24 Then you call(AA) on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord.(AB) The god who answers by fire(AC)—he is God.”
Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”
25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.” 26 So they took the bull given them and prepared it.
Then they called(AD) on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response;(AE) no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.
27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.”(AF) 28 So they shouted louder and slashed(AG) themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. 29 Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice.(AH) But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.(AI)
30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar(AJ) of the Lord, which had been torn down. 31 Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.”(AK) 32 With the stones he built an altar in the name(AL) of the Lord, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs[a] of seed. 33 He arranged(AM) the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”
34 “Do it again,” he said, and they did it again.
“Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time. 35 The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.
36 At the time(AN) of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “Lord, the God of Abraham,(AO) Isaac and Israel, let it be known(AP) today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.(AQ) 37 Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know(AR) that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”
38 Then the fire(AS) of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.
39 When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate(AT) and cried, “The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!”(AU)
40 Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley(AV) and slaughtered(AW) there.
41 And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.” 42 So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.(AX)
43 “Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked.
“There is nothing there,” he said.
Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”
44 The seventh time(AY) the servant reported, “A cloud(AZ) as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.”
So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”
45 Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain(BA) started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.(BB) 46 The power(BC) of the Lord came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt,(BD) he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
