Elijah’s Triumph over the Priests of Baal

20 So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel, and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel. 21 And Eli′jah came near to all the people, and said, “How long will you go limping with two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Ba′al, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word. 22 Then Eli′jah said to the people, “I, even I only, am left a prophet of the Lord; but Ba′al’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

20 Achab riep daarop het hele volk en alle profeten samen bij de berg Karmel.

21 Elia richtte toen het woord tot hen. ‘Hoe lang blijft u nog op twee gedachten hinken?’ vroeg hij het volk. ‘Als de Here uw God is, volg Hem dan. Maar als Baäl god is, moet u die volgen!’ 22 Hij ging verder: ‘Ik ben de enig overgebleven profeet van de Here, maar Baäl heeft vierhonderdvijftig profeten!

20 So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.(A) 21 Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver(B) between two opinions? If the Lord(C) is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”

But the people said nothing.

22 Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left,(D) but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.(E)
