¹⁵ “The Lord will strike Israel as a reed is shaken in the water; he will root up Israel out of this good land that he gave to their ancestors and scatter them beyond the Euphrates, because they have made their sacred poles,^[a] provoking the Lord to anger.^(A)

¹⁵ But just as all the good things that the Lord your God promised concerning you have been fulfilled for you, so the Lord will bring upon you all the bad things until he has destroyed you from this good land that the Lord your God has given you.^{(A) 16} If you transgress the covenant of the Lord your God, which he enjoined on you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, then the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly from the good land that he has given to you.”

²⁹ In the days of King Pekah of Israel, King Tiglath-pileser of Assyria came and captured Ijon, Abel-beth-maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali, and he carried the people captive to Assyria.^(A)

³ Break down their altars, smash their pillars, burn their sacred poles^[a] with fire, and cut down the idols of their gods, and thus blot out their name from their places.^{(A) 4} You shall not serve the Lord your God in such ways.

¹³ Rather, you shall tear down their altars, break their pillars, and cut down their sacred poles,^{[a](A) 14} for you shall worship no other god, because the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.^(B)

²⁴ When John’s messengers had gone, Jesus^[a] began to speak to the crowds about John:^[b] “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind?

¹³ He answered, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.^(A)
