2 When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard about it, for he was still in Egypt where he had fled from King Solomon’s presence,(A) Jeroboam stayed in Egypt.[a] 3 They summoned him, and Jeroboam and the whole assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam: 4 “Your father made our yoke difficult.(B) You, therefore, lighten your father’s harsh service and the heavy yoke he put on us,(C) and we will serve you.”

New International Version
2 When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this (he was still in Egypt, where he had fled(A) from King Solomon), he returned from[a] Egypt. 3 So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and the whole assembly of Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him: 4 “Your father put a heavy yoke(B) on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”

4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.
