David’s Last Days

1 Now King David was old and advanced in age.(A) Although they covered him with bedclothes, he could not get warm.(B) 2 So his servants said to him, ‘Let us[a] search for a young virgin for my lord the king.(C) She is to attend the king and be his caregiver. She is to lie by your side so that my lord the king will get warm.’ 3 They searched for a beautiful girl throughout the territory of Israel; they found Abishag(D) the Shunammite[b](E) and brought her to the king. 4 The girl was of unsurpassed beauty,(F) and she became the king’s caregiver. She attended to him, but he was not intimate with[c] her.

Adonijah’s Bid for Power

5 Adonijah son of Haggith(G) kept exalting himself, saying, ‘I will be king! ’ He prepared chariots, cavalry, and fifty men to run ahead of him.[d](H) 6 But his father had never once infuriated(I) him by asking, ‘Why did you do that? ’(J) In addition, he was quite handsome(K) and was born after Absalom.(L) 7 He conspired[e] with Joab son of Zeruiah(M) and with the priest Abiathar.(N) They supported(O) Adonijah, 8 but the priest Zadok,(P) Benaiah son of Jehoiada,(Q) the prophet Nathan,(R) Shimei,(S) Rei, and David’s royal guard[f](T) did not side with Adonijah.

9 Adonijah sacrificed sheep, goats, cattle, and fattened cattle near the stone of Zoheleth, which is next to En-rogel.(U) He invited all his royal brothers and all the men of Judah, the servants of the king,(V) 10 but he did not invite the prophet Nathan, Benaiah, the royal guard, or his brother Solomon.(W)

Nathan’s and Bathsheba’s Appeals

11 Then Nathan(X) said to Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother,(Y) ‘Have you not heard that Adonijah son of Haggith has become king(Z) and our lord David does not know it?(AA) 12 Now please come and let me advise you.(AB) Save your life and the life of your son Solomon.(AC) 13 Go, approach King David and say to him, “My lord the king, did you not swear to your servant: Your son Solomon is to become king after me, and he is the one who is to sit on my throne?(AD) So why has Adonijah become king? ” 14 At that moment, while you are still there speaking with the king, I’ll come in after you and confirm your words.’(AE)

15 So Bathsheba went to the king in his bedroom. Since the king was very old, Abishag the Shunammite was attending to him.(AF) 16 Bathsheba knelt low and paid homage to the king, and he asked, ‘What do you want? ’

17 She replied, ‘My lord, you swore to your servant by the Lord your God, “Your son Solomon is to become king after me, and he is the one who is to sit on my throne.” 18 Now look, Adonijah has become king. And,[g] my lord the king, you didn’t know it. 19 He has lavishly sacrificed oxen, fattened cattle, and sheep. He invited all the king’s sons, the priest Abiathar, and Joab the commander of the army, but he did not invite your servant Solomon. 20 Now, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you to tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. 21 Otherwise, when my lord the king rests with his ancestors,(AG) I and my son Solomon will be regarded as criminals.’(AH)

22 At that moment, while she was still speaking with the king, the prophet Nathan arrived,(AI) 23 and it was announced to the king, ‘The prophet Nathan is here.’ He came into the king’s presence and paid homage to him with his face to the ground.

24 ‘My lord the king,’ Nathan said, ‘did you say, “Adonijah is to become king after me, and he is the one who is to sit on my throne”? 25 For today he went down and lavishly sacrificed oxen, fattened cattle, and sheep. He invited all the sons of the king, the commanders of the army, and the priest Abiathar. And look! They’re eating and drinking in his presence, and they’re saying, “Long live King Adonijah! ” 26 But he did not invite me – me, your servant – or the priest Zadok or Benaiah son of Jehoiada or your servant Solomon. 27 I’m certain my lord the king would not have let this happen without letting your servant[h] know who will sit on my lord the king’s throne after him.’

Solomon Confirmed King

28 King David responded by saying, ‘Call in Bathsheba for me.’ So she came into the king’s presence and stood before him. 29 The king swore an oath and said, ‘As the Lord lives, who has redeemed my life from every difficulty,(AJ) 30 just as I swore to you by the Lord God of Israel: Your son Solomon is to become king after me, and he is the one who is to sit on my throne in my place,(AK) that is exactly what I will do this very day.’(AL)

31 Bathsheba knelt low with her face to the ground, paying homage to the king,(AM) and said, ‘May my lord King David live for ever! ’(AN)

32 King David then said, ‘Call in the priest Zadok, the prophet Nathan, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada for me.’(AO) So they came into the king’s presence. 33 The king said to them, ‘Take my servants(AP) with you, have my son Solomon ride on my own mule,(AQ) and take him down to Gihon.(AR) 34 There, the priest Zadok and the prophet Nathan are to anoint him as king over Israel.(AS) You are to blow the ram’s horn(AT) and say, “Long live King Solomon! ”(AU) 35 You are to come up after him, and he is to come in and sit on my throne. He is the one who is to become king in my place; he is the one I have commanded to be ruler(AV) over Israel and Judah.’(AW)

36 ‘Amen,’ Benaiah son of Jehoiada replied to the king. ‘May the Lord, the God of my lord the king, so affirm it.(AX) 37 Just as the Lord was with my lord the king,(AY) so may he[i] be with Solomon and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.’(AZ)

38 Then the priest Zadok, the prophet Nathan, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites(BA) went down, had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and took him to Gihon. 39 The priest Zadok took the horn of oil from the tabernacle and anointed Solomon.(BB) Then they blew the ram’s horn,(BC) and all the people proclaimed, ‘Long live King Solomon! ’(BD) 40 All the people went up after him, playing flutes and rejoicing with such a great joy(BE) that the earth split open from the sound.[j]

Adonijah Hears of Solomon’s Coronation

41 Adonijah and all the invited guests who were with him(BF) heard the noise as they finished eating. Joab heard the sound of the ram’s horn and said, ‘Why is the town in such an uproar? ’(BG) 42 He was still speaking when Jonathan son of Abiathar the priest,(BH) suddenly arrived. Adonijah said, ‘Come in, for you are an important man, and you must be bringing good news.’(BI)

43 ‘Unfortunately not,’ Jonathan answered him. ‘Our lord King David has made Solomon king. 44 And with Solomon, the king has sent the priest Zadok, the prophet Nathan, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have had him ride on the king’s mule. 45 The priest Zadok and the prophet Nathan have anointed him king in Gihon.(BJ) They have gone up from there rejoicing. The town has been in an uproar; that’s the noise you heard. 46 Solomon has even taken his seat on the royal throne.(BK)

47 ‘The king’s servants have also gone to congratulate our lord King David, saying, “May your God make the name of Solomon more well known than your name, and may he make his throne greater than your throne.”(BL) Then the king bowed in worship on his bed.(BM) 48 And the king went on to say this: “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel! Today he has provided one to sit on my throne,(BN) and I am a witness.” ’[k]

49 Then all of Adonijah’s guests got up trembling and went their separate ways. 50 Adonijah was afraid of Solomon, so he got up and went to take hold of the horns of the altar.(BO)

51 It was reported to Solomon, ‘Look, Adonijah fears King Solomon, and he has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, “Let King Solomon first[l] swear to me that he will not kill his servant with the sword.” ’

52 Then Solomon said, ‘If he is a man of character, not a single hair of his will fall to the ground,(BP) but if evil is found in him, he dies.’(BQ) 53 So King Solomon sent for him, and they took him down from the altar. He came and paid homage to King Solomon, and Solomon said to him, ‘Go to your home.’

王位之争

1 大卫王年纪老迈，虽然盖了几层被子，仍然觉得冷。 2 他的臣仆建议：“不如选一位少女进宫伺候、照顾我主我王，让她睡在王怀中给王取暖。”

3 于是，他们在以色列全国寻找美貌女子，找到了一位名叫雅比莎的书念少女，把她带到王那里。 4 这女子长得花容月貌，她照顾、伺候王，但王没有与她同房。

5 那时，哈姬的儿子亚多尼雅妄自尊大，说：“我必做王。”他为自己制备了车辆和骑兵，派五十人在前面开路。 6 他父亲从不干涉、责问他：“你这是做什么？”他是押沙龙的弟弟，长得英俊非凡。

7 亚多尼雅与洗鲁雅的儿子约押及祭司亚比亚他商议，二人都答应支持他。 8 不过，撒督祭司、耶何耶大的儿子比拿雅、拿单先知、示每、利以和大卫的勇士却没有跟随他。

15 拔示芭就进内室去见年迈的王，书念的少女雅比莎正在伺候他。 16 拔示芭向王屈身下拜。王问道：“你有什么事吗？” 17 拔示芭回答说：“我主啊，你曾经凭你的上帝耶和华起誓说让臣妾的儿子所罗门继承你的王位，坐你的宝座。 18 但现在亚多尼雅已经称王了，我主我王还不知道。 19 他宰了许多牛羊和肥牛犊献祭，邀请众王子、亚比亚他祭司和约押元帅，却没有邀请你的仆人所罗门。 20 我主我王啊！以色列举国拭目以待，等着王来指定谁继承王位。 21 不然，到我主我王与祖先同眠之后，我和我儿所罗门必被定为罪人。”

22 她与王正说话间，拿单先知进宫来了。 23 有人奏告王，说：“拿单先知来了。”拿单来到王面前，俯伏在地， 24 说：“我主我王啊，你已经宣布让亚多尼雅继承你的王位，坐你的宝座吗？ 25 他今天宰了许多牛羊和肥犊献祭，宴请众王子、将领和亚比亚他祭司，他们正在他那里一边吃喝一边说，‘亚多尼雅王万岁！’ 26 但他没有邀请臣仆我、撒督祭司、耶何耶大的儿子比拿雅和你的仆人所罗门。 27 这是我主我王的旨意吗？王还没有对臣仆们说过谁继承王位。”

28 于是，大卫王召见拔示芭。拔示芭立刻晋见，侍立在王面前。 29 王起誓说：“我凭救我脱离一切苦难的永活的耶和华起誓， 30 我今天必实现我凭以色列的上帝耶和华向你起的誓。你的儿子所罗门必继承王位，坐在我的宝座上。”

31 拔示芭就向王俯伏下拜说：“我主我王万岁！”

32 大卫王又召见撒督祭司、拿单先知和耶何耶大的儿子比拿雅。他们都来到王面前。 33 王嘱咐道：“你们要率领我的随从，让我儿所罗门骑上我的骡子，护送他下到基训。 34 撒督祭司和拿单先知要在那里膏立他为以色列王。你们要吹响号角，高喊，‘所罗门王万岁！’ 35 然后，你们要随他回来，他要登基，继承我的王位。我已立他做以色列和犹大的君王了。”

36 耶何耶大的儿子比拿雅说：“遵命，愿我主我王的上帝耶和华成全这事。 37 耶和华怎样与我主我王同在，愿祂也照样与所罗门同在，使他的国比我主大卫王的国更强大。” 38 于是，撒督祭司、拿单先知、耶何耶大的儿子比拿雅，以及基利提人和比利提人请所罗门骑上大卫王的骡子，护送他前往基训。 39 撒督祭司从圣幕里拿来盛膏油的角，膏立所罗门为王。他们吹响号角，民众高声欢呼：“所罗门王万岁！” 40 众人浩浩荡荡地随着所罗门回京，一路上吹笛欢呼，声音震动大地。 41 亚多尼雅和他的众宾客刚刚饮宴完毕，听见了这声音。约押听见号角声，便问：“城里为什么如此喧闹？” 42 就在这时候，亚比亚他祭司的儿子约拿单来了，亚多尼雅说：“进来！你是个忠勇的人，一定带来了好消息。”

49 亚多尼雅的众宾客听后，吓得四散而去。 50 亚多尼雅惧怕所罗门，就去抓住祭坛的角。 51 有人告诉所罗门：“亚多尼雅惧怕王，现在正抓住祭坛的角，要王今天起誓不要杀他。”

52 所罗门说：“如果他是个忠义的人，必毫发无损；如果他作恶，必死无疑。” 53 于是，所罗门王便派人去把亚多尼雅从祭坛上带下来。亚多尼雅前来向所罗门王俯伏下拜，所罗门对他说：“你回家去吧。”

Adonijah Presumes to Be King

1 Now King David was (A)old, [a]advanced in years; and they put covers on him, but he could not get warm. 2 Therefore his servants said to him, “Let a young woman, a virgin, be sought for our lord the king, and let her [b]stand before the king, and let her care for him; and let her lie in your bosom, that our lord the king may be warm.” 3 So they sought for a lovely young woman throughout all the territory of Israel, and found (B)Abishag the (C)Shunammite, and brought her to the king. 4 The young woman was very lovely; and she cared for the king, and served him; but the king did not know her.

5 Then (D)Adonijah the [c]son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will [d]be king”; and (E)he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him. 6 (And his father had not [e]rebuked him at any time by saying, “Why have you done so?” He was also very good-looking. (F)His mother had borne him after Absalom.) 7 Then he conferred with (G)Joab the son of Zeruiah and with (H)Abiathar the priest, and (I)they followed and helped Adonijah. 8 But (J)Zadok the priest, (K)Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, (L)Nathan the prophet, (M)Shimei, Rei, and (N)the mighty men who belonged to David were not with Adonijah.

9 And Adonijah sacrificed sheep and oxen and fattened cattle by the stone of [f]Zoheleth, which is by (O)En Rogel;[g] he also invited all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah, the king’s servants. 10 But he did not invite Nathan the prophet, Benaiah, the mighty men, or (P)Solomon his brother.

11 So Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, “Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of (Q)Haggith has become king, and David our lord does not know it? 12 Come, please, let me now give you advice, that you may save your own life and the life of your son Solomon. 13 Go immediately to King David and say to him, ‘Did you not, my lord, O king, swear to your maidservant, saying, (R)“Assuredly your son Solomon shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne”? Why then has Adonijah become king?’ 14 Then, while you are still talking there with the king, I also will come in after you and confirm your words.”

15 So Bathsheba went into the chamber to the king. (Now the king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite was serving the king.) 16 And Bathsheba bowed and did homage to the king. Then the king said, “What is your wish?”

17 Then she said to him, “My lord, (S)you swore by the Lord your God to your maidservant, saying, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne.’ 18 So now, look! Adonijah has become king; and now, my lord the king, you do not know about it. 19 (T)He has sacrificed oxen and fattened cattle and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the sons of the king, Abiathar the priest, and Joab the commander of the army; but Solomon your servant he has not invited. 20 And as for you, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, that you should tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. 21 Otherwise it will happen, when my lord the king (U)rests with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be counted as offenders.”

22 And just then, while she was still talking with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in. 23 So they told the king, saying, “Here is Nathan the prophet.” And when he came in before the king, he bowed down before the king with his face to the ground. 24 And Nathan said, “My lord, O king, have you said, ‘Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne’? 25 (V)For he has gone down today, and has sacrificed oxen and fattened cattle and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the king’s sons, and the commanders of the army, and Abiathar the priest; and look! They are eating and drinking before him; and they say, (W)‘Long[h] live King Adonijah!’ 26 But he has not invited me—me your servant—nor Zadok the priest, nor Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, nor your servant Solomon. 27 Has this thing been done by my lord the king, and you have not told your servant who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”

David Proclaims Solomon King(X)

28 Then King David answered and said, “Call Bathsheba to me.” So she came into the king’s presence and stood before the king. 29 And the king took an oath and said, (Y)“As the Lord lives, who has redeemed my life from every distress, 30 (Z)just as I swore to you by the Lord God of Israel, saying, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place,’ so I certainly will do this day.”

31 Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth, and paid homage to the king, and said, (AA)“Let my lord King David live forever!”

32 And King David said, “Call to me Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada.” So they came before the king. 33 The king also said to them, (AB)“Take with you the servants of your lord, and have Solomon my son ride on my own (AC)mule, and take him down to (AD)Gihon.[i] 34 There let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet (AE)anoint him king over Israel; and (AF)blow the horn, and say, [j]‘Long live King Solomon!’ 35 Then you shall come up after him, and he shall come and sit on my throne, and he shall be king in my place. For I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and Judah.”

36 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king and said, (AG)“Amen! May the Lord God of my lord the king say so too. 37 (AH)As the Lord has been with my lord the king, even so may He be with Solomon, and (AI)make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.”

38 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, (AJ)Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the (AK)Cherethites, and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and took him to Gihon. 39 Then Zadok the priest took a horn of (AL)oil from the tabernacle and (AM)anointed Solomon. And they blew the horn, (AN)and all the people said, [k]“Long live King Solomon!” 40 And all the people went up after him; and the people played the flutes and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth seemed to split with their sound.

41 Now Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they finished eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the horn, he said, “Why is the city in such a noisy uproar?” 42 While he was still speaking, there came (AO)Jonathan, the son of Abiathar the priest. And Adonijah said to him, “Come in, for (AP)you are a prominent man, and bring good news.”

43 Then Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, “No! Our lord King David has made Solomon king. 44 The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites; and they have made him ride on the king’s mule. 45 So Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon; and they have gone up from there rejoicing, so that the city is in an uproar. This is the noise that you have heard. 46 Also Solomon (AQ)sits on the throne of the kingdom. 47 And moreover the king’s servants have gone to bless our lord King David, saying, (AR)‘May God make the name of Solomon better than your name, and may He make his throne greater than your throne.’ (AS)Then the king bowed himself on the bed. 48 Also the king said thus, ‘Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who has (AT)given one to sit on my throne this day, while my eyes see (AU)it!’ ”

49 So all the guests who were with Adonijah were afraid, and arose, and each one went his way.

50 Now Adonijah was afraid of Solomon; so he arose, and went and (AV)took hold of the horns of the altar. 51 And it was told Solomon, saying, “Indeed Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon; for look, he has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.’ ”

52 Then Solomon said, “If he proves himself a worthy man, (AW)not one hair of him shall fall to the earth; but if wickedness is found in him, he shall die.” 53 So King Solomon sent them to bring him down from the altar. And he came and fell down before King Solomon; and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”
