²⁰ There were still people left from the Amorites, Hittites,^(A) Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites^(B) (these peoples were not Israelites).

⁷ There were still people left from the Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites^(A) (these people were not Israelites). ⁸ Solomon conscripted^(B) the descendants of all these people remaining in the land—whom the Israelites had not destroyed—to serve as slave labor, as it is to this day. ⁹ But Solomon did not make slaves of the Israelites for his work; they were his fighting men, commanders of his captains, and commanders of his chariots and charioteers. ¹⁰ They were also King Solomon’s chief officials—two hundred and fifty officials supervising the men.

¹¹ Solomon brought Pharaoh’s daughter^(C) up from the City of David to the palace he had built for her, for he said, “My wife must not live in the palace of David king of Israel, because the places the ark of the Lord has entered are holy.”

¹² On the altar^(D) of the Lord that he had built in front of the portico, Solomon sacrificed burnt offerings to the Lord, ¹³ according to the daily requirement^(E) for offerings commanded by Moses for the Sabbaths,^(F) the New Moons^(G) and the three^(H) annual festivals—the Festival of Unleavened Bread,^(I) the Festival of Weeks^(J) and the Festival of Tabernacles.^{(K) 14} In keeping with the ordinance of his father David, he appointed the divisions^(L) of the priests for their duties, and the Levites^(M) to lead the praise and to assist the priests according to each day’s requirement. He also appointed the gatekeepers^(N) by divisions for the various gates, because this was what David the man of God^(O) had ordered.^{(P) 15} They did not deviate from the king’s commands to the priests or to the Levites in any matter, including that of the treasuries.

¹⁶ All Solomon’s work was carried out, from the day the foundation of the temple of the Lord was laid until its completion. So the temple of the Lord was finished.

¹⁷ Then Solomon went to Ezion Geber and Elath on the coast of Edom. ¹⁸ And Hiram sent him ships commanded by his own men, sailors who knew the sea. These, with Solomon’s men, sailed to Ophir and brought back four hundred and fifty talents^[a] of gold,^(Q) which they delivered to King Solomon.

Driving Out the Nations

7 When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess^(A) and drives out before you many nations^(B)—the Hittites,^(C) Girgashites,^(D) Amorites,^(E) Canaanites, Perizzites,^(F) Hivites^(G) and Jebusites,^(H) seven nations larger and stronger than you— ² and when the Lord your God has delivered^(I) them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy^(J) them totally.^[a](K) Make no treaty^(L) with them, and show them no mercy.^{(M) 3} Do not intermarry with them.^(N) Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons,

¹¹ Obey what I command^(A) you today. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.^{(B) 12} Be careful not to make a treaty^(C) with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare^(D) among you.

²⁸ I will send the hornet^(A) ahead of you to drive the Hivites, Canaanites and Hittites^(B) out of your way. ²⁹ But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals^(C) too numerous for you. ³⁰ Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession^(D) of the land.

³¹ “I will establish your borders from the Red Sea^[a] to the Mediterranean Sea,^[b] and from the desert to the Euphrates River.^(E) I will give into your hands the people who live in the land, and you will drive them out^(F) before you. ³² Do not make a covenant^(G) with them or with their gods. ³³ Do not let them live in your land or they will cause you to sin against me, because the worship of their gods will certainly be a snare^(H) to you.”

²³ My angel will go ahead of you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and Jebusites,^(A) and I will wipe them out.
