^16 (A)‘Since the day that I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel in which to build a house, ^(B)that my name might be there. ^(C)But I chose David to be over my people Israel.’

David Anointed King

16 The Lord said to Samuel, ^(A)“How long will you grieve over Saul, since ^(B)I have rejected him from being king over Israel? ^(C)Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, ^(D)for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”

⁴ Yet the Lord God of Israel ^(A)chose me from all my father's house to be king over Israel ^(B)forever. ^(C)For he chose Judah as leader, and in the house of Judah my father's ^(D)house, and among my father's sons he took pleasure in me to make me king over all Israel.

^29 (A)that your eyes may be open night and day toward this house, the place of which you have said, ^(B)‘My name shall be there,’ that you may listen to the prayer that your servant offers toward this place.

⁴ But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, ⁵ “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: ^(A)Would you build me a house to dwell in? ⁶ I have not lived in a house ^(B)since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about ^(C)in a tent for my dwelling. ⁷ In all places where ^(D)I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with ^(E)any of the judges^[a] of Israel, whom I commanded ^(F)to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ ⁸ Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, ^(G)I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince^[b] over my people Israel.

¹¹ then to ^(A)the place that the Lord your God will choose, to make his name dwell there, there you shall bring all that I command you: your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, ^(B)your tithes and the contribution that you present, and all your finest vow offerings that you vow to the Lord.

⁵ For I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up Israel to this day, ^(A)but I have gone from tent to tent and from dwelling to dwelling. ⁶ In all places where I have moved with all Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’

¹² Go now to ^(A)my place that was in Shiloh, ^(B)where I made my name dwell at first, and ^(C)see what I did to it because of the evil of my people Israel.
