³ “You know that my father David could not build a house for the name of the Lord his God because of the warfare with which his enemies surrounded him, until he^[a] put them under the soles of his feet.^[b](A)

³ But God said to me, ‘You shall not build a house for my name, for you are a warrior and have shed blood.’^(A)

⁸ But the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ‘You have shed much blood and have waged great wars; you shall not build a house to my name because you have shed so much blood in my sight on the earth.^(A)

²² And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church,^(A)

²⁵ For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.^(A)

³ And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, on the day when I act, says the Lord of hosts.^(A)

Psalm 110

Assurance of Victory for God’s Priest-King

Of David. A Psalm.

⁶ but I have chosen Jerusalem in order that my name may be there, and I have chosen David to be over my people Israel.’^{(A) 7} My father David had it in mind to build a house for the name of the Lord, the God of Israel.^{(B) 8} But the Lord said to my father David, ‘You did well to consider building a house for my name;

⁴ and cedar logs without number—for the Sidonians and Tyrians brought great quantities of cedar to David.^{(A) 5} For David said, “My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house that is to be built for the Lord must be exceedingly magnificent, famous and glorified throughout all lands; I will therefore make preparation for it.” So David provided materials in great quantity before his death.^(B)

David’s Charge to Solomon and the Leaders

⁶ Then he called for his son Solomon and charged him to build a house for the Lord, the God of Israel.
