⁵ At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, “Ask what I should give you.”^(A)

⁵ If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you.^{(A) 6} But ask in faith, never doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.^(B)

² the Lord appeared to Solomon a second time, as he had appeared to him at Gibeon.^(A)

¹³ I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. ¹⁴ If in my name you ask me^[a] for anything, I will do it.

⁷ That night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, “Ask what I should give you.”^{(A) 8} Solomon said to God, “You have shown great and steadfast love to my father David and have made me succeed him as king.^{(B) 9} O Lord God, let your promise to my father David now be fulfilled, for you have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth.^{(C) 10} Give me now wisdom and knowledge to go out and come in before this people, for who can rule this great people of yours?”^{(D) 11} God answered Solomon, “Because this was in your heart and you have not asked for possessions, wealth, honor, or the life of those who hate you and have not even asked for long life but have asked for wisdom and knowledge for yourself that you may rule my people over whom I have made you king,^{(E) 12} wisdom and knowledge are granted to you. I will also give you riches, possessions, and honor, such as none of the kings had who were before you, and none after you shall have the like.”^(F)

⁶ And he said, “Hear my words:

³⁶ And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?”

¹² And he dreamed that there was a stairway^[a] set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.^{(A) 13} And the Lord stood beside him^[b] and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring,^(B)

The Escape to Egypt

¹³ Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.”^(A)

⁹ Then the Lord was angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice^(A)
