^2 (A)Meanwhile the people sacrificed at the high places, because there was no house built for the name of the Lord until those days.

⁴³ And ^(A)he walked in all the ways of his father Asa. He did not turn aside from them, doing what was right in the eyes of the Lord. Nevertheless ^(B)the high places were not taken away, for the people offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places.

^17 (A)Nevertheless the people still sacrificed on the ^[a]high places, but only to the Lord their God.

^2 (A)You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations which you shall dispossess served their gods, ^(B)on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree. ³ And ^(C)you shall destroy their altars, break their sacred pillars, and burn their ^[a]wooden images with fire; you shall cut down the carved images of their gods and destroy their names from that place. ⁴ You shall not ^(D)worship the Lord your God with such things.

⁵ “But you shall seek the ^(E)place where the Lord your God chooses, out of all your tribes, to put His name for His ^(F)dwelling^[b] place; and there you shall go.

^47 (A)But Solomon built Him a house.

⁴⁸ “However, ^(B)the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says:

³ But God said to me, ^(A)‘You shall not build a house for My name, because you have been a man of war and have shed ^(B)blood.’ ⁴ However the Lord God of Israel ^(C)chose me above all the house of my father to be king over Israel forever, for He has chosen ^(D)Judah to be the ruler. And of the house of Judah, ^(E)the house of my father, and ^(F)among the sons of my father, He was pleased with me to make me king over all Israel. ^5 (G)And of all my sons (for the Lord has given me many sons) ^(H)He has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel. ⁶ Now He said to me, ‘It is ^(I)your son Solomon who shall build My house and My courts; for I have chosen him to be My son, and I will be his Father.

⁴ “Go and tell My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: “You shall ^(A)not build Me a house to dwell in. ⁵ For I have not dwelt in a house since the time that I brought up Israel, even to this day, but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another. ⁶ Wherever I have moved about with all Israel, have I ever spoken a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’ ” ’
