⁴⁰ While your servant was busy here and there, the man disappeared.”

“That is your sentence,”^(A) the king of Israel said. “You have pronounced it yourself.”

²² “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words,^(A) you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?^(B)

²⁴ “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. ²⁵ So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’

²⁶ “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? ²⁷ Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

⁵ David^(A) burned with anger^(B) against the man^(C) and said to Nathan, “As surely as the Lord lives,^(D) the man who did this must die! ⁶ He must pay for that lamb four times over,^(E) because he did such a thing and had no pity.”

⁷ Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man!^(F) This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed^(G) you^(H) king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.

⁴¹ “He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,”^(A) they replied, “and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants,^(B) who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time.”

⁴² Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:

⁴³ “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you^(D) and given to a people who will produce its fruit.
