²² And King Solomon answered and said to his mother, “Now why do you ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Ask for him the kingdom also—for he is my ^(A)older brother—for him, and for ^(B)Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah.”

² the third, ^(A)Absalom the son of Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur; the fourth, ^(B)Adonijah the son of Haggith;

^3 (A)You ask and do not receive, ^(B)because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.

³⁸ But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the ^(A)cup that I drink, and be baptized with the ^(B)baptism that I am baptized with?”

²² But Jesus answered and said, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink ^(A)the cup that I am about to drink, ^[a]and be baptized with ^(B)the baptism that I am baptized with?”

They said to Him, “We are able.”

^5 (A)And these were born to him in Jerusalem: ^[a]Shimea, Shobab, Nathan, and ^(B)Solomon—four by ^[b]Bathshua the daughter of ^[c]Ammiel.

²⁴ And Nathan said, “My lord, O king, have you said, ‘Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne’? ^25 (A)For he has gone down today, and has sacrificed oxen and fattened cattle and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the king’s sons, and the commanders of the army, and Abiathar the priest; and look! They are eating and drinking before him; and they say, ^(B)‘Long^[a] live King Adonijah!’

¹¹ So Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, “Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of ^(A)Haggith has become king, and David our lord does not know it?

⁵ Then ^(A)Adonijah the ^[a]son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will ^[b]be king”; and ^(B)he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him. ⁶ (And his father had not ^[c]rebuked him at any time by saying, “Why have you done so?” He was also very good-looking. ^(C)His mother had borne him after Absalom.) ⁷ Then he conferred with ^(D)Joab the son of Zeruiah and with ^(E)Abiathar the priest, and ^(F)they followed and helped Adonijah.
