¹⁰ He said, “I have been very ^(A)jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, ^(B)thrown down your altars, and ^(C)killed your prophets with the sword, ^(D)and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.”

⁴ and ^(A)when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water.)

²² Then Elijah said to the people, ^(A)“I, even I only, am left a prophet of the Lord, but Baal's prophets are ^(B)450 men.

¹⁴ (for ^(A)you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God),

^5 (A)You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am ^(B)a jealous God, ^(C)visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,

^2 (A)God has not rejected his people whom he ^(B)foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel? ^3 (C)“Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.” ⁴ But what is God's reply to him? ^(D)“I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”

³⁰ Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that had been ^(A)thrown down.

¹³ and it shall be to him and to ^(A)his descendants after him the covenant of ^(B)a perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and made atonement for the people of Israel.’”

¹¹ “Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel, in that he ^(A)was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the people of Israel in ^(B)my jealousy.

¹⁷ His disciples remembered that it was written, ^(A)“Zeal for your house will consume me.”
