³⁷ Answer me, O Lord, answer me, so that this people may know that you, O Lord, are God and that you have turned their hearts back.”

¹⁷ Now therefore, O our God, listen to the prayer of your servant and to his supplication, and for your own sake, Lord,^[a] let your face shine upon your desolated sanctuary.^{(A) 18} Incline your ear, O my God, and hear. Open your eyes and look at our desolation and the city that bears your name. We do not present our supplication before you on the ground of our righteousness but on the ground of your great mercies.^{(B) 19} O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, listen and act and do not delay! For your own sake, O my God, because your city and your people bear your name!”^(C)

¹⁶ He will turn many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God.^{(A) 17} With the spirit and power of Elijah he will go before him, to turn the hearts of parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”^(B)

²⁵ I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you.^{(A) 26} A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you, and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.^{(B) 27} I will put my spirit within you and make you follow my statutes and be careful to observe my ordinances.^(C)

²⁴ Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord; the god who answers by fire is indeed God.” All the people answered, “Well spoken!”^(A)

⁸ I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything out of friendship, at least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs.^(A)

⁵ See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.^{(A) 6} He will turn the hearts of parents to their children and the hearts of children to their parents, so that I will not come and strike the land with a curse.^[a]

¹⁷ Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear; open your eyes, O Lord, and see; hear all the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God.^{(A) 18} Truly, O Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations and their lands^{(B) 19} and have hurled their gods into the fire, though they were no gods but the work of human hands—wood and stone—and so they were destroyed.^{(C) 20} So now, O Lord our God, save us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone are the Lord.”^(D)
