¹⁹ “Let there be a treaty between you and me, as there was between my father and your father. See, I have sent you a present of silver and gold. Come and break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel, so that he will withdraw from me.”

⁸ And why not say, ^(A)“Let us do evil that good may come”?—as we are slanderously reported and as some affirm that we say. Their ^[a]condemnation is just.

^31 [a]undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, ^[b]unforgiving, unmerciful;

^13 (A)And he took the king’s offspring, made a covenant with him, ^(B)and put him under oath. He also took away the mighty of the land, ¹⁴ that the kingdom might be ^(C)brought low and not lift itself up, but that by keeping his covenant it might stand. ¹⁵ But ^(D)he rebelled against him by sending his ambassadors to Egypt, ^(E)that they might give him horses and many people. ^(F)Will he prosper? Will he who does such things escape? Can he break a covenant and still be delivered?

¹⁶ ‘As I live,’ says the Lord God, ‘surely ^(G)in the place where the king dwells who made him king, whose oath he despised and whose covenant he broke—with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die.

The Folly of Not Trusting God

² And Jehu the son of Hanani ^(A)the seer went out to meet him, and said to King Jehoshaphat, “Should you help the wicked and ^(B)love those who hate the Lord? Therefore the ^(C)wrath of the Lord is upon you.

Hanani’s Message to Asa

⁷ And at that time ^(A)Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said to him: ^(B)“Because you have relied on the king of Syria, and have not relied on the Lord your God, therefore the army of the king of Syria has escaped from your hand.

³ “Let there be a treaty between you and me, as there was between my father and your father. See, I have sent you silver and gold; come, break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel, so that he will withdraw from me.”

² So the king called the Gibeonites and spoke to them. Now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but ^(A)of the remnant of the Amorites; the children of Israel had sworn protection to them, but Saul had sought to kill them ^(B)in his zeal for the children of Israel and Judah.
