¹⁹ “Let there be a treaty^(A) between me and you,” he said, “as there was between my father and your father. See, I am sending you a gift of silver and gold. Now break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so he will withdraw from me.”

⁸ Why not say—as some slanderously claim that we say—“Let us do evil that good may result”?^(A) Their condemnation is just!

³¹ they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love,^(A) no mercy.

¹³ Then he took a member of the royal family and made a treaty^(A) with him, putting him under oath.^(B) He also carried away the leading men^(C) of the land, ¹⁴ so that the kingdom would be brought low,^(D) unable to rise again, surviving only by keeping his treaty. ¹⁵ But the king rebelled^(E) against him by sending his envoys to Egypt^(F) to get horses and a large army.^(G) Will he succeed? Will he who does such things escape? Will he break the treaty and yet escape?^(H)

¹⁶ “‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, he shall die^(I) in Babylon, in the land of the king who put him on the throne, whose oath he despised and whose treaty he broke.^(J)

Woe to Those Who Rely on Egypt

² Jehu^(A) the seer, the son of Hanani, went out to meet him and said to the king, “Should you help the wicked^(B) and love^[a] those who hate the Lord?^(C) Because of this, the wrath^(D) of the Lord is on you.

⁷ At that time Hanani^(A) the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him: “Because you relied^(B) on the king of Aram and not on the Lord your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand.

³ “Let there be a treaty^(A) between me and you,” he said, “as there was between my father and your father. See, I am sending you silver and gold. Now break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so he will withdraw from me.”

² The king summoned the Gibeonites^(A) and spoke to them. (Now the Gibeonites were not a part of Israel but were survivors of the Amorites; the Israelites had sworn to spare them, but Saul in his zeal for Israel and Judah had tried to annihilate them.)
