⁸ I tore^(A) the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it to you, but you have not been like my servant David, who kept my commands and followed me with all his heart, doing only what was right^(B) in my eyes.

⁵ For David had done what was right in the eyes of the Lord and had not failed to keep^(A) any of the Lord’s commands all the days of his life—except in the case of Uriah^(B) the Hittite.

³⁶ “Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep;^(A) he was buried with his ancestors^(B) and his body decayed.

²² After removing Saul,^(A) he made David their king.^(B) God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart;^(C) he will do everything I want him to do.’^(D)

Ahaz King of Judah^(A)

28 Ahaz^(B) was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years. Unlike David his father, he did not do what was right in the eyes of the Lord.

³³ I will do this because they have^[a] forsaken me and worshiped^(A) Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Molek the god of the Ammonites, and have not walked^(B) in obedience to me, nor done what is right in my eyes, nor kept my decrees^(C) and laws as David, Solomon’s father, did.

³⁴ “‘But I will not take the whole kingdom out of Solomon’s hand; I have made him ruler all the days of his life for the sake of David my servant, whom I chose and who obeyed my commands and decrees. ³⁵ I will take the kingdom from his son’s hands and give you ten tribes. ³⁶ I will give one tribe^(D) to his son so that David my servant may always have a lamp^(E) before me in Jerusalem, the city where I chose to put my Name. ³⁷ However, as for you, I will take you, and you will rule^(F) over all that your heart desires;^(G) you will be king over Israel. ³⁸ If you do whatever I command you and walk in obedience to me and do what is right^(H) in my eyes by obeying my decrees^(I) and commands, as David my servant did, I will be with you. I will build you a dynasty^(J) as enduring as the one I built for David and will give Israel to you.

³ The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the ways of his father David^(A) before him. He did not consult the Baals

³⁰ and Ahijah took hold of the new cloak he was wearing and tore^(A) it into twelve pieces. ³¹ Then he said to Jeroboam, “Take ten pieces for yourself, for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘See, I am going to tear^(B) the kingdom out of Solomon’s hand and give you ten tribes.

¹⁴ And if you walk^(A) in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.”^(B)
