¹⁶ But he said, “I cannot return with you or go in with you, nor will I eat food or drink water with you in this place,^(A)

⁸ But the man of God said to the king, “If you give me half your kingdom, I will not go in with you, nor will I eat food or drink water in this place.^{(A) 9} For thus I was commanded by the word of the Lord: ‘You shall not eat food, or drink water, or return by the way that you came.’ ”

²³ But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance^[a] to me, for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.”

¹⁰ Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! for it is written,

¹⁹ You also stay here overnight, so that I may learn what more the Lord may say to me.”

¹³ So Balaam rose in the morning and said to the officials of Balak, “Go to your own land, for the Lord has refused to let me go with you.”

The First Sin and Its Punishment

3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God say, ‘You shall not eat from any tree in the garden’?”^{(A) 2} The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, ³ but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die.’ ”^(B)
