¹⁶ The man of God said, “I cannot turn back and go with you, nor can I eat bread^(A) or drink water with you in this place.

⁸ But the man of God answered the king, “Even if you were to give me half your possessions,^(A) I would not go with you, nor would I eat bread^(B) or drink water here. ⁹ For I was commanded by the word of the Lord: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came.’”

²³ Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan!^(A) You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

¹⁰ Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan!^(A) For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’^[a]”^(B)

¹⁹ Now spend the night here so that I can find out what else the Lord will tell me.^(A)”

¹³ The next morning Balaam got up and said to Balak’s officials, “Go back to your own country, for the Lord has refused to let me go with you.”

The Fall

3 Now the serpent^(A) was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?^(B)”

² The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,^{(C) 3} but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”^(D)
