The Man of God From Judah

13 By the word of the Lord a man of God^(A) came from Judah to Bethel,^(B) as Jeroboam was standing by the altar to make an offering.

¹⁷ The king asked, “What is that tombstone I see?”

The people of the city said, “It marks the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and pronounced against the altar of Bethel the very things you have done to it.”

³² He instituted a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth^(A) month, like the festival held in Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. This he did in Bethel,^(B) sacrificing to the calves he had made. And at Bethel he also installed priests at the high places he had made. ³³ On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, a month of his own choosing, he offered sacrifices on the altar he had built at Bethel.^(C) So he instituted the festival for the Israelites and went up to the altar to make offerings.

¹⁵ According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord,^(A) will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.^(B)

³ For twenty-three years—from the thirteenth year of Josiah^(A) son of Amon king of Judah until this very day—the word of the Lord has come to me and I have spoken to you again and again,^(B) but you have not listened.^(C)

²⁹ The Babylonians who are attacking this city will come in and set it on fire; they will burn it down,^(A) along with the houses^(B) where the people aroused my anger by burning incense on the roofs to Baal and by pouring out drink offerings^(C) to other gods.^(D)

¹² The towns of Judah and the people of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to whom they burn incense,^(A) but they will not help them at all when disaster^(B) strikes.

¹⁸ They confronted King Uzziah and said, “It is not right for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the Lord. That is for the priests,^(A) the descendants^(B) of Aaron,^(C) who have been consecrated to burn incense.^(D) Leave the sanctuary, for you have been unfaithful; and you will not be honored by the Lord God.”

²⁹ As for the other events of Solomon’s reign, from beginning to end, are they not written in the records of Nathan^(B) the prophet, in the prophecy of Ahijah^(C) the Shilonite and in the visions of Iddo the seer concerning Jeroboam^(D) son of Nebat?
