⁶ Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he was yet alive, saying, “How do you advise me to answer this people?”

² Azariah the son of ^(A)Hoshaiah and ^(B)Johanan the son of Kareah and ^(C)all the insolent men said to Jeremiah, “You are telling a lie. The Lord our God did not send you to say, ^(D)‘Do not go to Egypt to live there,’

² and said to Jeremiah the prophet, “Let ^(A)our plea for mercy come before you, and ^(B)pray to the Lord your God for us, for all ^(C)this remnant—^(D)because we are left with but a few, as your eyes see us— ³ that ^(E)the Lord your God may show us the way we should go, and the thing that we should do.” ⁴ Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard you. Behold, I will pray to the Lord your God according to your request, and ^(F)whatever the Lord answers you I will tell you. ^(G)I will keep nothing back from you.” ⁵ Then they said to Jeremiah, ^(H)“May the Lord be a true and ^(I)faithful witness against us ^(J)if we do not act according to all the word ^(K)with which the Lord your God sends you to us.

² and these were his high officials: Azariah the son of Zadok was ^(A)the priest;

⁵ Then Absalom said, “Call ^(A)Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear what he has to say.”

²⁰ Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, “Give your counsel. What shall we do?”
