³³ So he made offerings on the altar which he had made at Bethel on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, in the month which he had ^(A)devised in his own heart. And he ^[a]ordained a feast for the children of Israel, and offered sacrifices on the altar and ^(B)burned incense.

The Message of the Man of God

13 And behold, ^(A)a man of God went from Judah to Bethel ^[a]by the word of the Lord, ^(B)and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.

³⁹ And you shall have the tassel, that you may look upon it and ^(A)remember all the commandments of the Lord and do them, and that you ^(B)may not ^(C)follow the harlotry to which your own heart and your own eyes are inclined,

¹³ making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

⁶ then he need not honor his father ^[a]or mother.’ Thus you have made the ^[b]commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.

¹³ Therefore the Lord said:

⁶ Now he went out and ^(A)made war against the Philistines, and broke down the wall of Gath, the wall of Jabneh, and the wall of Ashdod; and he built cities around Ashdod and among the Philistines.

¹² then I said, ‘The Philistines will now come down on me at Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to the Lord.’ Therefore I felt compelled, and offered a burnt offering.”
