⁴ For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and ^(A)his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, ^(B)as was the heart of David his father.

⁴ And as for you, if you will ^(A)walk before me, ^(B)as David your father walked, with integrity of heart and uprightness, doing according to all that I have commanded you, and keeping my statutes and my rules,

^61 (A)Let your heart therefore be wholly true to the Lord our God, walking in his statutes and keeping his commandments, as at this day.”

David's Charge to Solomon

⁹ “And you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve him with a ^(A)whole heart and with a willing mind, ^(B)for the Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought. ^(C)If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever.

⁶ So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and did not wholly follow the Lord, as David his father had done.

² And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, and walked in the ways of David his father; and he did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

³ The Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the earlier ways of his father David. He did not seek the Baals,

² from the nations concerning which the Lord had said to the people of Israel, ^(A)“You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love.

¹⁷ And he ^(A)shall not acquire many wives for himself, lest his heart turn away, ^(B)nor shall he acquire for himself excessive silver and gold.

^26 (A)Did not Solomon king of Israel sin on account of such women? ^(B)Among the many nations there was no king like him, and he was ^(C)beloved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless, foreign women made even him to sin. ²⁷ Shall we then listen to you and do all this great evil and ^(D)act treacherously against our God by marrying foreign women?”
