¹¹ So the Lord said to Solomon, “Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees,^(A) which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear^(B) the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates.

¹⁵ So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from the Lord,^(A) to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah^(B) the Shilonite.

¹⁶ When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king:

So the Israelites went home.^(E)

³¹ Then he said to Jeroboam, “Take ten pieces for yourself, for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘See, I am going to tear^(A) the kingdom out of Solomon’s hand and give you ten tribes.

²⁰ When all the Israelites heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. Only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to the house of David.^(A)

¹³ The Lord says:

²¹ When he tore^(A) Israel away from the house of David, they made Jeroboam son of Nebat their king.^(B) Jeroboam enticed Israel away from following the Lord and caused them to commit a great sin.^(C)

⁹ Why did you despise^(A) the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down^(B) Uriah^(C) the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed^(D) him with the sword of the Ammonites. ¹⁰ Now, therefore, the sword^(E) will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’

¹¹ “This is what the Lord says: ‘Out of your own household^(F) I am going to bring calamity on you.^(G) Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will sleep with your wives in broad daylight.^{(H) 12} You did it in secret,^(I) but I will do this thing in broad daylight^(J) before all Israel.’”

²⁶ But Samuel said to him, “I will not go back with you. You have rejected^(A) the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you as king over Israel!”

²⁷ As Samuel turned to leave, Saul caught hold of the hem of his robe,^(B) and it tore.^{(C) 28} Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn^(D) the kingdom^(E) of Israel from you today and has given it to one of your neighbors—to one better than you.^(F)

¹³ “You have done a foolish thing,^(A)” Samuel said. “You have not kept^(B) the command the Lord your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.^{(C) 14} But now your kingdom^(D) will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart^(E) and appointed^(F) him ruler^(G) of his people, because you have not kept^(H) the Lord’s command.”
